Shur no choice for some only to go chasing the dollar. They're not up there for the sights or the local wit :)

As opposed to the glorious repartee of... where? :D

its still grim in England at the moment by the sounds of it - R rate has creeped back up above 1 in southwest and northwest also reported that 17000 being infected every day in England - thankfully we are in a better situation at the moment

Open to correction but think all the "small" retailers with street access were due to open on Monday anyway so should be all ready to go.

The larger ones may not be ready to go as I think they were all in phase 3 (June 29th) so may have been caught out slightly by today.

And the shopping centres which were down to open on 10 August moving to 15 June, 8 weeks earlier may also be caught out. But they do now have a week to get ready.

Great to hear the good news today but in reality they should have began opening up from May 5th. Hopefully we never have to endure a mass lockdown again as it appears to have been an exercise in cracking a nut with a sledgehammer.
Anyway onwards and upwards and try and make the most out of the uncertain times ahead.

Borrowing our policy from the C.C.P., by way of Italy, was a grim thing to do.

Hopefully the plan to reduce carbon emissions by 2025 won't bring new strange and evil surprises, with numpties shouting "It's for the planet! We're saving lives" as they watch extreme weather events on Youtube.

    I'd say we're in a "low, dishonest decade" (W.H. Auden's summation of the 1930s)

Hopefully there will not be too many bright sparks who prioritise the Covid payment as opposed to saying yes to hours next week. On a bright note it will make decisions easier for employers.

    Hairdressers not opening is misogynistic.

Being sarcastic tbh in that post ,such extremes .

Posters started out by slashing anybody working in the health service for supporting the restrictions as they were 4 or 5 week s ago.
Emphasis then was how bad this was for the health service causing backlogs and health screening being paused.
Which was true , but arguing that reasons for the lockdown and restrictions were control issues or overreaction by NPHET and the government was the groupthink among many on here ,not that there actually was a good scientific basis for the restrictions and lifting them slowly

More recently the emphasis shifted to a very different concern from these posters ,about holidays abroad , pubs and hairdressers / barbers .Although some were honest about this from the off, quite a few were seemingly outraged at how the health service just wasn't doing a good job apparently .
Not that hairdressers, holidays and pubs are unimportant , but definitely not up there and very much luxuries.
Just interesting to see how some posters take the high moral ground only when it suits them .

Very happy with today’s announcement. I have plans to go into town on Monday morning with my mam to get a few bits and to try to spend some money locally.

My personal training sessions are starting again on Monday (one on one sessions in a private gym), so please god I’ll shift a bit of the excess I’ve gained from not being so active.
Have booked a trip to Dingle for the end of next month too which I’m very much looking forward to.

The only thing that could make this day even better is getting the phone call to say that I’m back to work, but that won’t be happening till at least August by the looks of it. Fingers crossed the new roadmap might speed things up in a bit in that regard.

This is the first time since mid March that I’ve felt any sort of hope, and it’s so lovely to be able to enjoy a nice Friday evening without feeling a knot in the pit of my stomach with anxiety for the future.
It’s such a relief to see things finally moving in the right direction.

I am delighted too . Its tough to remember the early days full of that fear and anxiety . That nervous feeling that Covid was coming and the worry of who it would get . Many a morning I would wake and for one split second wondered if I had dreamed it all.
It feels good today to be able to think we might get back to normality albeit a bit different but the fear and anxiety is gone and its a good feeling
As Leo spoke and the realisation sank in that they had the confidence to move on I wanted to dance at the cross roads !

Yes, I'd be concerned that a spike in cases there could derail our progress here. I hope that turns out to be baseless.

I have no idea what Tony looks like or what the relevance is to the alledged misogyny.

It’s a Happy Friday evening on here! Thank goodness the government have finally sprung into action.
The nicest surprise from today was it was somewhat unexpected to me. I assumed it would be phase 2 and nothing else. The lifting of the travel to county limit is excellent news, as is the news all retail is reopening & being able to plan holidays here for July too. Discussions of airbridges today also which might save some airline and travel industry jobs.
It gives people hope and something for people to look forward to and build towards, while also beginning to remove the fear factor.

Does a toasted ham and cheese qualify as a meal?

That with a nice bowl of soup definitely fills me up good.

I think Ireland is easing restrictions at the right pace. I'm not so sure about the UK although God knows the government there has lost credibility with the Cummings situation.

So all going to plan.. I can a pint and a basket of cocktail sausages and chips in my local on the 29th of June....
very vague about not needing a restaurant license. Surely that means you put a small menu outside, with let’s just say. Ham sammich and crisps €4 and desert a corneto from the freezers €2 and table service and you’re sorted..
all pubs have to be registered with the EHO/HSE anyway so.... bring on the pints!!!!

When will those who work in offices be permitted to return to their premises again?
My office has been closed since March 12th last and I have not been working remotely as its not possible in my role.
In line with today's government announcement, what date and stage of govt roadmap will I be permitted to return to work?
    Thank you.

Where is all the angst over healthscreening and hairdressers ?

Really? Am I not allowed to be happy for the good, positive news we received today?

I bet if I came on here this evening only complaining & berating the government about lack of cancer screenings & the fact that hairdressers are in phase 4 I’m quite sure many here would have called me ungrateful for the progress and told me to ‘call my doctor if I’m concerned about my health’, because urgent patients are still being looked after.
Like they have done every other time this issue has come up on thread.

I have been in touch with a local TD for the last 2 weeks over the issues surrounding cancer screenings and he has assured me that this is of utmost importance to resolve, and it’s currently being worked on.
I have also signed a petition specifically about the urgency surrounding restarting Cervical Check services and shared with my friends and family.

Today’s announcement will take easily a few hundred thousand off the live register, and will be the first solid attempt we as a country make at a return to normality in almost 3 months.
That is definitely something to be happy about & celebrate, even if I’d rather get my hair done next week and want the health service to resume to normal, not that I personally owe you an explanation on that matter or anything.
It is possible to feel happy & relieved at the progress today while recognising there are still huge issues surrounding cancer screenings & early intervention.

Regarding the pubs, can customers order just a drink or do they have to buy food as well?
