What does that even mean? It’s like something lifted directly from Trump’s twitter page.

What exactly have they messed up? Is it the timing of cancelling parades? What would you have them do? Cancel everything and cause widespread panic? They've followed the advise from the HSE to date, which is based on advice from the WHO. There’s been very little government action on anything else, as is customary when we have an interim government. They’ve already said they’ll engage with the house whenever any executive decisions are made. All you’re doing is throwing mud continuously without any substance behind it. Criticise every decision even though you have no evidence that an alternative decision would be better.

The rugby match decision was a faff and a failure, given all those people came anyway and most likely spent much more time in close contact with citizens when their was no match to occupy them.

Then they dither and faff about the St. Patrick's day parade, when everyone knew it had to be cancelled a week ago. A child could tell you it was a bad idea and asking for trouble ffs.

I don't criticise EVERY decision they make, but for goodness sake how could you see this as well managed or inspiring of confidence?

I believe the poster that you quoted was correct. One of the guest speakers on the Today with Sean O'Rourke radio show was Professor John Oxford, a leading virologist, whom one would expect has a vast knowledge related to this particular situation.

All things considered, it looks like the parade and events for St Patrick's day are to be cancelled.

Yes, and a virologist would know what to do to counter the spread of a virus.

However, he would not take into account other effects on public health, which is why the decisions are for public health experts not virologists.

So we only knew today that bringing thousands of people into close contact with each other was dangerous?

    Ah, didn't know that blanch.

So, do you think Leo should advise 20,000 Irish racegoers not to travel to Cheltenham ?

That makes no sense. The match was cancelled to prevent them spending time in close proximity to 50,000 other people. The health officials believe you’re at risk of contracting this if you spend 15 minutes in close contact with someone who has it. It’s not a hard rule, but it gives a rough idea of how it spreads. There are far fewer people matching that criteria because the match was cancelled.

As it is pretty much all the cases here to date are Irish people returning from travel, or people who were in close contact with them since they returned. We couldn’t have prevented that. We can’t just abandon our people abroad by closing off travel altogether.

Taking one to make a decision fills me, and I’m sure many others, with confidence that they are taking due consideration of all the facts. They are listening to experts before deciding, rather than the rabble talking ****e on social media.

It was always likely that the parade would be cancelled, it’s still likely that other similar events will be cancelled. It was always going to happen that the virus would get here. The concentrations should be on limiting its spread. Shutting down the whole country will cause much more damage than this virus will. People need jobs, we need an economy to fund our health service.

    Ah, didn't know that blanch.

I know you favour government by social media volume, but while in theory everyone knows that bringing thousands of people into close contact with each other was dangerous, but the decision required is whether bringing the thousands of people who are likely to attend a particular event on a particular day presents a risk or not.

After all, you are among those who like to remind us of the right to free assembly and free movement which underpin the right to protest. Your fellow travellers in PBP wouldn't call off their protest for last Saturday, though I suppose the difference was they got numbers in the tens.

It is LESS dangerous in the open air at a match.
By canceling just the match they just created more time for people to spend indoors (it is winter after all)

There is confident leadership and then there is faffing and dithering.

The impression they have been giving is that they don't think this is a serious threat. Other countries are quarantining millions and huge areas, yet we can't make a decision on a fecking parade. They think that they can play brinkmanship games with it. Stalling and stalling to see if they can get away with some events.

Yes, let me see, the twice daily parades in Disneyland are still going on, ditto the firework shows in the evening. I see the Cannes Film Festival is going ahead too, as did Milan Fashion Week. Really, you don't have a clue.

They did make a decision on the parade. 8 days in advance. There’s be no difference if it was made last week. Also they’ve announced special sick pay for people affected so that they are more likely to self isolate. Is that a good idea from them?

Actually there was. There are a lot of people still investing in prep for it.

We know nothing new about this virus that we didn't know two months ago. Once it was here these decisions should be easy.

Faffing and dithering inspires no confidence.

Those going ahead are wrong in the UK, France etc., are they?

You see Francie, there isn't just a simple answer when you have to make such decisions. All sorts of factors have to be taken into account.

Something's gone wrong somewhere when a party says it doesn't want to be in government.

The whole point of being a politician is to affect law and policy. It's vastly harder to do that when not in government. It's like saying they don't want to bother being politicians anymore. Which is fine, just stop taking the pay also.

Your reply is worded to suit your agenda.
The Coronavirus in this instance and at this moment should be taking precedent over anything else as we could be looking at a over a hundred thousand deaths as a result of it spreading.
The Virologists that have been chosen or asked to speak on such shows are aware how quickly it can spread and under what conditions.
In this instance, that Virologist was correct in his response, that he would have chosen to cancel the parade and events.
I have no such agenda and have some knowledge in this field.
The risk of it spreading at mass gatherings is too high when the best solution would be to try and convince everybody to do the opposite.
If on one hand people are being told that everything is okay and a parade will go ahead, and a few days later they are being told to self quarantine for two weeks - which would undoubtedly have been the outcome from that, then it would only have served to confuse the public about the virus.
There needs to be some definite guidelines. As it stands, half the country are convinced that there is nothing to worry about, while the other half are stocking up and self quarantining, worrying about elderly relatives and those with health issues, especially respiratory problems.

Yes they are wrong and I would imagine those who eventually (after much faffing about) cancelled St Patrick's day would agree.

You cancel a match to stop people congregating and then try and fecking pretend that you have a hard decision to make about an even bigger congregation of people?

    Did somebody mention 'simple'?

Yeah its Leo and Corona Virus that meant that SF and the "left" didnt have the numbers

He ruled out a coalition of all parties whole the emergency is on us.
That said I'm happy common sense is prevailing and the parades are called off. Please got we get through all this with minimal deaths.

Obviously those going ahead are wrong....afaik.the test for transmission is 10 mins spent within 1 metre of someone with CV

Having a parade with thousands of people packed along a route seems an obvious breeding point for it,since it has a 14 day incubation period, people can spread it without knowing they have it

Id be very suprised of the GAA championship geos ahead, and think SF and DUP need to come out and provisionally ban orange parades in the north on health grounds (with view that they go ahead,if things improve)

You must be really annoyed at the SF/DUP government up North which hasn’t cancelled their parades.

    Should Mary-Lou and Michelle resign?

Or realising the people don't want you in government.

There was a protest on Saturday, didn't you see it?

The people spoke and want change and FG aren't part of it.

    Democracy my friend:)

Nah, its Sinn Fein playing catch-up. Once the big boys in the South showed them what to do, they got the courage to follow.

    Typically you'll begrudge.

MLMD cancelled her trip to the States on 5th of March recognising the seriousness of the situation.

Lol. Tell that to the vast majority of the cabbages elected to the Dáil then. All the rabble rousers in the form of SF, PBP, all those useless Independents and Brid Smith types have no interest in government and have always got in on a cushy template of opposition. The arithmetic has completely changed this time- Thebes been almost too successful with their verbal diarrhoea and despite our inept media they are under a spotlight of “so what are you actually going to do”?

MLM is a complete irrelevance on a trip to America. I never even knew she went anywhere , I fail to see the relevance or importance of a nobody like her going tbh. Frankly, I’d consider it a plus at anytime that she stays in max attention seeking “isolation mode” to save the country the obvious embarrassment and potential damage she could do to potential investment.
