    Van Morrison and The Waterboys playing an Essex festival in mid-August. Former surely has to play sometime and the latter haven't played for over a decade.

    So, if I understand it correctly....
    if (Thread.title == "Electric Picnic 2020"){
        EP > ATN
    }
    elseif (Thread.title == "All Together Now 2020" && user.attending(Thread.event)){
        ATN > EP
    }

    How about we just don't compare a medium sized festival trying to find its feet with a well established large festival heading towards mega comercialisation.

    Hard not to when many posters go to both and they're after broadly the same acts.

    But I think the general feeling here is that we want both to do well and we enjoy having the choice. And were a festival like that on my own doorstep Pablo I'd be more than delighted.

    Shout out to those of us smugly going to both!

    I still reckon Pet Shop Boys could be a later ATN addition btw.

    Am going to both .. also hoping to get to B&S (mainly cos Marc Rebillet is playing). Have tickets for vantastival also. Hopefully will get to all 4 this year, starting small and growing over the summer.

    I've been to 5 EP's 2013-2017. I've been going to Another Love Story, B&S and ATN since. I would love to return but I just stopped enjoying the festival as the years went on and my group of friends stopped going too.

    I hope nothing but good things for all fests - If they could make it freeflow I'd be there in a second.

    Ah lads, leave off. It was a Mogwai related comment. Only EP from now on, I get it.

    Given the way the news is going, could we have a special guest in the form of the Wu-flu gang (the corona-viruses new album)?

    The tour seems to be getting new countries added daily

    Might be worth checking if any bookies have odds on festivals being cancelled.

    Big events drawing an international audience like the Olympics or the euros could be included on that conversation too. I'd say we'd be ok though, given that most of the clientele would be domestic.

    Just the four festivals for myself this year two of which are in June and Green Day in the RDS which is also in June. Might as well give up working for that month.

    A hectic summer for me had just got a bit busier, Ian Brown playing in Limerick but Touts supporting pushed me over the line.

    EP security are not, the acts and their crew/gear are not, Pink Moon and other providers are not, and we will have cases found here in the next few weeks given how connected we are.

    Wasn't having a pop at you at all. Just commenting on the apples and oranges nature of the discussion and the considerable loyalty many have for EP.

    Good point, it's inevitable we will have cases here soon. Let's hope we have the aul vaccine by EP time eh?

    Rammestein
    Guns and roses

    All in June. My boss is like eh are you planning to be here for any of that month

    But Zero for August so bring it on

    WHO estimate is 18 months before a vaccine is publicly available.

    Much depends on the preparation, quarantine facilities and resoinse teams. As to events going ahead we're really in the hands of the health authorities.

    On the off chance things do get really serious I'd say a vaccine will come quicker. I still believe this is overhyped by the media but it still has potential to get worse. We'll have to wait and see.

    Definitely think it's a real possibility for all large gatherings to be cancelled if it gets bad here like in Northern Italy - they cancelled a festival carnival in Venice on Saturday!

    RATM definitely not.

    Run the Jewels yes.

    The other three are young Irish bands, two of whom have only been gigging for less than 3 years, the others a local Athy band whose debut was 2.5 years ago.

    In terms of the staleness I was referring to older acts who are not strangers to these shores and who've done EP at least once (Groove Armada, Jarvis Cocker, Rufus Wainwright, etc). By any standards it ain't cutting edge and ATN had the opportunity to be a bit more avant-garde.

    In comparison EP is likely to have 40/50 acts who've never played the festival before. Alongside some new biggies they'll unearth the best of new bands as they always do.

    In summary, ATN should be doing a lot better than this.

    EP has been running for almost two decades so by law of averages, some previous acts will of course show up at ATN. And as we've seen from many Irish festivals, "avant-garde" just doesn't sell enough tickets.

    Fifteen years so far, sixteen soon, and of course some former acts from EP will turn up, but 85-90% of the bill? ATN last year was much more adventurous - Black Midi, Olafur Arnolds, Anna Calvi, Fullee Love Collective, Bedouine and several others who'd not done Irish festivals, or appeared very rarely.

    EP, despite its faults has 40/50 acts a year who've never played before. 2019 had
    Richard Ashcroft, Razorlight, Toshín, Elma Orchestra & Ryan Vail, Billie Eilish, Serpentwithfeet, Sports Team, Working Men's Club, Montauk Hotel, Amelie Lens, Khartoum, The Strokes, Gerry Cinnamon, Christine & the Queens, Jessica Pratt, Lamb, Duff McKagan, Brittany Howard, Freya Risings, Charli XCX, Viagra Boys, Sons of Kemet, Yves Tumor, Biig Piig, Happyalone, Martian Subculture, Kneecap, Bodega, Courtney Barnett, J Hus, The Streets, Let's Eat Grandma, Georgia, Mitski, Sinead O'Brien and lots more I can't remember.

    These acts keep the Picnic fresh. All festivals should be doing this and maybe they're trying but FR are spending big this year. We'll soon see.

    I've got two gigs and 3 festivals this year so far Nick Mason Saucerful of Secrets at end of April, the reggae day at Dun Laoghaire Harbour festival on June 1st, Body&Soul, ATN and Electric Picnic. :)

    If you want to get into it, you got to get out of it. (Hawkwind 1982)

    Nothing at the Galway Arts Fest? Though only about a third of the acts have been announced.

    It clashes with my weekend rest up after the hectic wedding of my nephew the weekend before, plus I then need to save a few quid for ATN the weekend after that I think, yup it starts July 31st which is about the same time as the Galway Races.

    It might be time to retire this conversation, as long as I get to speak last :)

    Just looking at your list for those who've never played here before and there are some that have...straight off I see Ryan Vail, Christine & the Queens, Biig Piig, J Hus. I guess you're only referring to those that haven't played an actual festival here. I still believe that ATN is finding other bands that haven't played here too, thus keeping things fresh too. Relativity...as one guy referred to it a while back ;)

    we've never had Alt-J, have we?

    Dull as dishwater live but brilliant music IMO,

    It runs for two weeks from the 13th to 26th July inclusive. Jon Hopkins, Pixies, etc plus there's always some trad at Monroes & the Róisín. It's a great fortnight.

    Specifically acts that never played EP before as per the first line of that paragraph.
