I find this image from the Gaurdian disturbing, are people just dropping dead from this? I would have thought that if you are about to die from this virus, the last thing on your mind would be oh I better just pop down the shop. May be an unrelated death.

"a grey-haired man wearing a face mask lies dead on the pavement, a plastic shopping bag in one hand, as police and medical staff in full protective suits and masks prepare to take him away."

Over 200% increase in confirmed cases, within 3days 10,000 in 21 countries as of last night, with uk added to list this morning:

That is great this happening! Are they isolated from other people in waiting rooms if suspected to have the virus?

Are there any facilities in Ireland to quarantine people if needed such as Uk and other countries?

Any patient suspected to have any link or possible connection to the coronavirus are segregated and isolated until it can be established if they have it or not. My hospital has had two cases. One under review. One negative. All I'll say is if numbers are low any hospital can manage. Any small sized influx and I can't imagine any hospital being able to cater for an outbreak in Ireland. Not enough beds and too many patients in close proximity to each other.

A lot of facilities to quarantine people were built the 20th century.

I find it surprising sometimes the amount of people who are unaware of it.

Bueamont has a quarantine facility as does Cherry Orchard (which was designed for that purpose).

they seem to be using handheld infrared thermometers to screen people at airports

    those things are useless

Where can you buy face masks in Dublin?
I ask because I normally pick up every bloody bug going where I fly...and I am flying next week...

Pretty much nowhere now. Even in bulk via manufacturers they're hard to come by. As someone pointed out upthread, you couldn't get stock of hand sanitizers from Boots online shop as of last night.

Edit: pretty much gone on Amazon, too - ordered some for the job on 25th, now they and all their "related items" are out of stock.

Better off washing your hands a lot. Minimize touching things and touching your mouth and eyes

No one is just going to drop dead out of nowhere without symptoms. More likely unrelated or untreated.

Wear a scarf, bring little hand sanitizer, keep washing your hands, especially after security. Wipe down plane seat, handles etc with dettol wipes. Planes are manky generally, my ENT advised all this as like you always was prone to getting sick flying.

Wear a empty 10L waterbottle upside on the head, (not joking).
Seen loads of photos emmerge from China showing this 'innovation'.

N95's don't protect the eyes, only recommended for a few hours use, and can't be re-used (washed) with any success, due to composite materials.

Could always DIY your own using basic elastic thread and some cotton/fine weave (which could then actually be washed/re-used).

Isn't the N95 useless, the virus is 3 times smaller than its fibre gaps. 0.3 micron protection against a 0.1 micron virus.

how is the virus getting airborne anyway, its not really free floating right

its going to be contained in sputum

They used to say the same with aids virus and condoms. Yes the virus is tiny but doesn't travel alone but is stuck on water droplets or dirt sneeze particles etc etc. these can be filtered.

Hmmmm, how's the hanoi heat as a sidenote?

Nowhere to be seen this time of year. Today is 15-20 with humidity sapping all heat.

There are two confirmed cases in the UK. This may be the tip of the iceberg as they are saying that 1,500 have arrived from Wuhan flights from China to UK since 10 Jan.

It is only a matter of time before we have our first case here, I hope that they are isolated with their contacts quickly.

There's always a shower of gob****es who don't give a damn and put the world at risk.
They flew out even though they knew the risk. Idiots.
I dare say there are a few of these prats in Ireland too.

Damn, seems like I've missed out on the temperate weather. Probably going to go over there when I know what's going on with this thing due to health insurance more than death :P

Won’t get through airport security with it on, can’t be larger than 100ml.

You will always get them but the point I am making is that the flights should have been prevented/quarantined.

They probably didn't show symptoms until the UK. And let's me honest, if I was sick in Wuhan I'd probably try leave to seek better medical attention elsewhere.

Disappointed that the government haven’t come out and said where people will be quarantined. Would the army bases not be ideal. The Curragh, Kilworth etc.

I imagine the British won’t want to be keeping Ben Kavanagh and the other Irish gang when they come into RAF Brize Norton shortly.

Not helping the argument whatsoever on either point.
And I notice the first person who thanked you was "Reckless Abandonment". Seems fitting.

He said he'll be there for 10-14 days, must have already had a plan for them when they took them on the flight

They had to sign a contract before they could board the flight agreeing to be quarantined otherwise they would have been refused a space on the flight.
