    Not a food item, but thought I’d post anyhow...

    Lidl have lovely Christmas bed linen sets in atm, made from brushed cotton. (Link: https://www.lidl.ie/en/leaflet/lidl-ie-leaflet-wk50-dec-2019-mon-9th-sun-15th/view/flyer/page/24)

    I got the red one (which is reversible...win!) and it’s quite nice quality. I bought a similar set from Anthony Ryan’s last year for a more expensive price and they were very coarse. The Lidl ones are very decent for the price (especially given that they won’t be on the bed that long).

    Back on topic, the honey roasted cashew and peanut nut mix are dangerously addictive. Perfect combination of sweet and salty :)

    yeah Ive been to three Lidls now over the last two weeks and still no wild boar. Looks like they had very limited quantities so only a minority of stores got them. Shame really.

    Could they really be Wild Boar though? Where do wild boar roam in the quantities that would be needed to stock all the Lidl's, and who hunts them down?

    Boar salami is available in Lidl Bray picked some up during the week. It is tucked away near in fridge near the bakery beside the cheeses.

    Regarding "wild boar", there is a breed of pig called Iron Age pigs which are from a wild boar and usually a Tamworth gilt/sow.

    The meat from the Iron Age pig is very similar to wild pig, it has a very gamey flavour.

    From a production point of view, this means you can rear "wild boar" flavoured meat in a similar way to traditional outdoor pig rearing.

    No need to hunt and shoot.

    Boar are a serious issue in a lot of tillage areas, so if you would like your grain uneaten (whether it be in liquid or solid form) they have to be gotten rid of.
    It's a big thing in Poland, I think,heading over for a game shoot.

    The wild boar pate 'log' was - I almost hate to use the word - moreish.
    Rustic\coarse with a denser texture and flavour than the usual pates.
    €2 for 250g is great value too.

    No scars received by the hunters I trust, unlike my mythological namesake :)

    If anyone spots some remaining wild boar steaks in any of the northside Dublin branches please shout!

    Since the thing a couple of months ago, where own-brand hummus in Lidl/Aldi/SuperValu was contaminated with salmonella, both Lidl and Aldi seem to have switched to the same new supplier - I can't for the life of me remember what it's called but it costs about 79c for a tub of plain or low-fat hummus.

    Anyway, I got this new brand in Lidl and I cannot recommend it - it tastes fine, but it goes off incredibly quickly - I find that it's souring by the end of the second day open. The old brand was perfectly good for 5-6 days after opening as long as I was careful.

    Tesco's own-brand is the same price, tastes good and keeps as well as the old aldi/lidl one used to.

    You can get a can of chickpeas for 30c. A jar of tahini will last for ages. You only need a few Tablespoons. So yeah, its much cheaper in the long run. And it doesn't have salmonella in it.

    cant seem to find tahini very easily so it was recommended to add peanut butter, seems to work great, have had it many times

    How often do chainsaws come into Lidl can any of the experts remember? Petrol ones not Lithium-ion.

    (Yeah yeah sounds delicious etc...)

    I just had a look at this on their website - they'll have fake Mozartkugeln and Sachertorte during that event!? Not entirely sure how I feel about those, and if they can be made "on the cheap". But I'm willing to give them a try anyway.

    They had the Mozartkugeln before - I like them! Not quite Reber, but close enough. However, this time they also sell Rote Grütze. Selling that under the header "Alpenfest" when it is from the North of Germany is slightly puzzling.

    The recent (last few months) goose fillets down in the 'posh meat' back freezer are excellent. Good size, good taste, much like duck if you've had that. About a fiver a breast in my local one.

    Never thought I'd be gone on Lidl frozen meats, but these are worth a try.

    Had the Pork Knuckle from the Alpenfest range last night. Weight on box is 600g but when the bones and fat are removed, there is about 200g of meat. Meat is tender and marinade is decent but overall not worth it for me.

    Tried their Seafood mix for the first time last week and it is delicious. Perfect in a fish pie.

    Their Frozen berries in the XXL range this week are excellent value. 1kg Strawberries/Mixed Berries and 750g Rasberries are 2.25.

    Incredible value when compared to the fresh alternative

    Finally got around to trying the Deluxe marmalade with Wild Burrow Gin they had in before Christmas (we pretty much never have bread in the house so rarely eat toast). It really is very good indeed, I must say.

    I've seen the seafood mix, was a bit wary of it for some reason. I will try it, but might use it in a tomato based soup.

    Fond memories of the red fish soup you get in France and Portugal, no one sells it here.

    That's great value :) Prior to the boil notice warning I would have also used these in smoothies, but alas you can't now. As post above says, you could always make jam or a coulis.... or something similar

    No XXL berries in my local. Was going to dump them in a Kilner jar and flood with sweetened vodka for, um, raspberry vodka in a few months time. Sobriety ahead :( .

    [Edit] Should have read to the end of the thread before posting. Didn't know about the boil thing either. Wonder if alcohol denatures viruses? (Not asking for food safety advice here.)

    About three times a year.
    My Dad just bought an angle grinder in Aldi for a tenner, it was in the reduced bin.
    He has a Petrol chainsaw and says don't touch the electric ones.

    He thinks they were on sale about two weeks ago in Aldi so might be good time to check if reduced any in price.
    Keep the receipt safe because they come with a very good warranty.

    That's great value :) Prior to the boil notice warning I would have also used these in smoothies, but alas you can't now. As post above says, you could always make jam or a coulis.... or something similar

    I bought a load of frozen berries and smoothie mixes yesterday.....can you not use them to make smoothies??? This is crazy if true - sure there's no point selling smoothie mixes if you can't use them to make what they are intended for...

    Still not great.

    Indefinitely doesn't exist in frozen food ;) Maybe in your chest freezer, but not commercially.

    All those products are dated normally. You can't trust all processors and suppliers, though so it can take a while....

    Apologies if this is off-topic, but I'm thinking about getting a vacuum sealer and Lidl have one on Thursday. Has anyone any experience with them? Are they all the same size, reliability, etc.? I don't mind paying a bit more for one on Amazon if needs be

    I haven't used this one but I have most of my small appliances from Lidl and haven't had a problem with any of them. I have a very high opinion for the QC of whoever buys their electrics for the wider Lidl group.

    Had one from Lidl some years ago.
    The machine worked fine but the plastic bags (not really bags, rather a plastic sheath on a roll) were rubbish and nearly always lost seal.

    You could probably source better bags or rolls but I never did and gave away the machine.

    I wonder what all the smoothie bars use? They use tons of frozen fruit and there's one in every shopping centre and food court. I'm sure they use imported berries all the time. How come they're allowed to continue selling smoothies if there's a risk?
