Yeah, Hawkins looked unstoppable in the first session, Wilson did well to catch up and eventually beat him. Can't warm to Wilson though for some reason.

Also, was harsh on Ding earlier, he's not a boring player I just didn't find that session yesterday very entertaining.

    I'm partial to your abracadabra
I'm raptured by the joy of it all

I've tended to be a little against K Wilson in the past, just always looked a bit workmanlike to me to be considered a potential world champion, but definitely wont be making that mistake again. Very impressive in closing out that match today, not many young guys i see as having the grit and mental stamina for these long matches, but he's definitely one of them. No reason for him to fear any opponent from here on in.

Two balls wiped their feet before dropping for Trump at a crucial stage of the first evening frame there. Good omen for him perhaps...

Trump wins the first two frames of the evening to level at 9-9. Ding would need to pick up his game here.

The way Trump is playing it doesn't like it would make any difference...

Ding hasn't shown up tonight. Trump wins all four frames before the midsession interval to lead 11-9.

Ronnie O'Sullivan tipped Kryon Wilson as future world champion sometime earlier this year because he has the 'bottle' etc.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

What a century there from Trump. Ding going home soon.

One of the best centuries of the tournament from Trump there, couple of great canons along the way. He’s looking like a potential champion tonight, but doing it for one session isn’t enough, this form has to continue.

I think he blows to hot and cold not consistent enough to win it.
Of course I could look very foolish after this post is read on the 6th of May.

Edit: Trump just missed and broke down at 51 leading 12 frames to 9.

Both winners back in action tomorrow at 2.30 is fairly harsh.

I know it's the schedule but such a quick turnaround and then for Higgins or Bingham to face into Robertson...ouch.

Ding is the most frustrating player to follow, all the talent in the world, but this infuriating inconsistency, about a decade ago I thought he'd be a nailed on World Champion, now I'm beginning to doubt that.

I doubt he'll ever win the worlds or even get to many WC finals

Wanted Hawkins, Yuelong, Ding and Bingham to win so not a successful day.

Trump was very impressive tonight. On what I’ve seen so far he’s the winner.

Robbo has a tough match v Higgins, he’s so tough to beat here.
Him v Trump in the final would be top drawer viewing though.

Like to see both Wilson’s progress to the semis as well.

Absolutely phenomenal session from Trump there. Must be heartbreaking to be 9-7 up and then lose six in a row to go out.

Annoying the way BBC and Eurosport always seem to be showing the same match when there's 2 on. Is it in their contracts or something? Or is it always obvious to the true snooker buff which is the more attractive fixture?

Ronnie O'Sullivan tipped Kryon Wilson as future world champion sometime earlier this year because he has the 'bottle' etc.

Ronnie also once tipped Stephen Maguire to go on and dominate the game when the latter was making his breakthrough, so i wouldnt always go on the great man's predictions ;)

But i do think attitude goes a long way, especially in this tournament which is totally unlike any other on the calendar. That said, kyren not exactly in the groove this morning, but i'd expect him to pick it up a bit as the match progresses.

It's usually an easy choice to be honest. I don't think it's contractual or anything like that.
This afternoon isn't clearcut though, could make a case for either being the main game so might be lucky and have both shown.

Wilson's little shuffle and cue movement before each shot had my head wrecked

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,325 ✭✭✭xi5yvm0owc1s2b

Gary Wilson came back from 0-3 down against Carter to win five frames in a row, so it's 5-3 to him after the first session.

Kyren Wilson and Gilbert ended level at 4-4 on the other table.

Looking forward to this afternoon. Hoping Higgins raises his game against Robertson. Maguire/Trump could be a one-sided affair unless Maguire plays a lot better than he did against Cahill.

Here we go, Higgins v Robertson. Robertson in great form, JH the master. Has the potential to be a classic.

Or a facile victory for Robbo...

There’s a bit of a bbc love in going on with Robertson at the moment . He’s unbeatable nearly according to them . I’m not buying it just yet . Higgins has had chances to win both 2 frames so far . Ok Robertson was good v Murphy but to me it looked like Murphy couldn’t wait to get knocked out to get to studio !

Trump 4-0 up on Maguire at the interval. Two centuries from Trump, including a 131 in the first frame. Don't see Maguire rising to the occasion here -- more likely that Trump will cruise to victory.

Nope, same one again. although tbh it seems a pretty obvious choice to me.

Can a snooker player be described as being 'too nice' ?
He does not seem to want to go out and destroy players which he is well capable of.
But more often that not he seems to wilt when a bit of pressure is put on him as well.
I remember when Hendry was in his pomp he was ruthless and used to even try to win with a session to spare so he could have a rest.
I know the strength and depth was not as strong in Hendry's day but that ruthless streak seems crucial at the top level.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Speaking of finishing off opponents with a session to spare ... Trump leads Maguire 7-1 and has every chance of going through in two sessions.

Possibly engaging in dubious stereotyping here, but is that ruthless streak generally lacking among Asian players, with their apparent stoicism and zen calm? And perhaps underlying awareness of the fundamental triviality of sport. Similarly there's a lot of good Asian golfers out there, but only one with a major win.
