If I'm walking behind a woman late at night or somewhere really quiet, I'll generally speed up and get past her as quickly as I can, because I don't want to make anyone nervous. If you're not a threat to someone, then there's no harm in doing something to indicate that fact, set their mind at rest. Simply saying "well, that's their own issue" is just selfish.

Tell me, do you extend the same courtesy to lone men at night?

More unbelievable guff from CK on her show yesterday. She said the Champions League final was irrelevant to her and anything to do with it is white noise and she filters it out. Ciara you may not be interested in the Champions League final today and that is your personal opinion but thousands of men and women up and down the country are and last time I checked you are a presenter of a Current Affairs Program that surely relates to and reports on........current affairs this weeks events and sports events etc

As for the way she treated that lady Eileen from Carlow who was facing homelessness during the week, I mean WTF. " Listen pet, you need to go and talk to someone, you could start with your GP " I mean just how condescending is that.

I`ve had enough, I am getting wound up listening now so I`m opting out. Can`t stand Muireann on Today FM with the nails on glass screech tones or Ronan Collins on R1 with the blandest of bland so I`m on the hunt for Lyric FM or even BBC5live

    Over and out

Ciara isn't my favourite presenter by any stretch and I do feel she is blinded almost exclusively by her opinion. But..... I must challenge you on this.

I really think you have gone out of your way to find something to complain about here. I could not disagree with you more.

A - Newstalk have Off the Ball as their only 7 day program and typically gets 25 hours a week live coverage. They will and have been discussing the Champions League Final extensively. And on their morning show as well (only available online) for a further 7 hours a week. There isn't a single radio show in the country who analyses actual sport between 12 and 2 Monday to Friday.

B - With respect to Eileen. I heard zero condescension from Ciara. She advised her to go to 2 people. A GP as a medical priority and to a social worker for assistance on her housing issue. She pleaded for people in the region who might be in a position to do so to reach out to help Eileen if they could. She suggested that her team would make some calls to see if they could help. I actually thought she went too far in trying to accommodate someone on the radio albeit with a heart breaking story but if there is a positive outcome for Eileen from Ciara's show, how many more people will be calling in to try to plead their case. I think it is dangerous territory for a show to be open to potentially dubious claims.

I haven't listened to the show in months, it is shıt and Kelly is an absolute pain. I turn the dial. Don't listen to Moncrieff anymore either, and i'd rather listen to Drivetime on RTE than Yates on NT. In fact the only show I look out for on NT now is Pat Kenny.

I agree with kelly Re the champions league match. Couldn't care less and completely irrelevant.

I agree with kelly Re the champions league match. Couldn't care less and completely irrelevant.

But it's not completely irrelevant to people who have an interest in it.

Usually the hallmark of a proper broadcaster is to show interest in a wide variety of topics and have some knowledge on them whether they actually have a genuine interest in them or not.

It doesn't help a broadcaster if they just dismiss topics as they are there to cater to the audience and not their own interests as it just shows a level of ignorance that broadcasters on national radio stations should not have.

But her programme is a current affairs show. Sport is trivial and is already given far too much coverage. Off the Ball covers sport for two hours every weekday. Surely that's enough.

If you outright dismiss something and say you have zero interest in it like she has in this case be it sport, films, music etc you are dismissing something that will be of interest to some of your listeners and dismissing something that people like is not a way of endearing you to them.No need to go into a detailed discussion just feign some interest and you don't have that issue.

Broadcasters feign interest in stuff all the time for the sake of their viewers and listeners.I guess that's the problem with getting a doctor to present a radio show she isn't a proper broadcaster and therefore she doesn't see things from some of her audiences perspective and thinks that her opinion is the only valid opinion, sadly that seems to be way all media is going these days.

Can you mention another show on national Irish radio or TV that discussed/analysed any match between 09:00 and 17:00 Monday to Friday?

You'll probably go back as far as 2002 and the Saipan incident and before that 1995 for Cantona's kick to find them discussed on any current affairs shows. There's plenty forums where they are discussed but in terms of sporting analysis they don't belong on shows like Ciara's.

Even when George was on during the day, he kept sport analysis out of his show.

I`m not for a minute saying there is not enough sports coverage on NT, indeed there`s maybe too much, but to dismiss out of hand the event and the thousands of people who will be glued to it seems to me inappropriate for a presenter of a daily lunchtime current affairs show. If she has nothing positive to add to the event, then simply don`t discuss it.

I thought it condescending to Eileen, she did say she had exhausted all avenues and would continue to do so. You don`t need to call someone "pet" on live radio. But I take your point about getting her "team" to investigate other options and like you say a dangerous precedent.

    Tks for your considered response

I don't see why she should feign interest in something she couldn't care less about. Sure, let someone talk about it if necessary but she is within her rights to say she doesn't care.

She can say she doesn't care but that sort of stuff doesn't exactly reflect well on a broadcaster of any kind as I'm not sure it helps endear you to listeners who may care.

I'm sure the football fans will get over it.

I heard one of her female contributors this week saying "Oh I'd love to take some time off and get some Tango lessons from a really hot guy in Brazil". And herself and Ciara Kelly laugh. It's this sort of sh1te that annoys me. Now I have no problem with her going and getting lessons from a guy in Brazil, be he hot or not. And I don't have a problem with her referring to the guy as hot. But if one of the male contributors were to say "I'd love to get dance lessons from a really hot girl", Sinead O'Carroll would be on line one saying "Why does it have to be a HOT girl, what would be wrong with getting lessons from a woman who was not HOT. You are treating woman as sex objects" and Ciara Kelly would be saying that ALL males need to attend classes in how to treat non-hot women better.

It's this sort of double standard that really gets to me, particularly given that the only purpose of the show seems to be Ciara Kelly's crusade for "equality". She doesn't even treat the sexes equally herself.

    Yep, complete double standards.

Unless it was his beloved rugby. Even then he tended to stick with injuries within the sport

I've also feeling that it will be wall to wall referendum on all stations on Monday

That really is a disgrace. Tango is danced in Argentina.

I only listen to selective podcasts but don’t mind her. My main problem with Newstalk programmes is the very repetitive nature of lifestyle topics. I’ve often heard the same movie reviewed on 3 programmes within a few days. Similarly, most Newstalk programmes seem to have Travel segments.

Sean O Rourke does sport on a regular basis. Especially on a monday

ivan yates talks about horseracing and man city all the time.

Most drive time shows do a sports slot. Usually after 6 although I think Radio 1 to something at half 5.

Somehow I think the desire to listen to talk about football won't be there on Monday anyway.

If you were, Yoy'd know he'd drop a Galway/Meath GAA or a golf anecdote into an interview about North Korea
