Andrea is light years ahead of Kelly in terms of professionalism and radio presence. It's beyond me how she was overlooked in favour of the doctor.

Good point, there is also Sara McInerney who I don`t think has a regular slot at the minute. She pops up on R1 Drivetime occasionally and also has a weekend show on TV3. The slot might suit her too

McInerney burnt her bridges with Newstalk....

Sarah has been good since going to RTE.

Andrea's voice is good for reading the news as she has a strong presence. But it's hard to listen to over long periods of time. But she certainly deserved a shot over Kelly.

    She is far superior.

Jasus the Ciara bashing is getting out of hand.

It's a thread about her show. She's a public figure. No-one forced her to take it on. You take the rough with the smooth..

The manner in which Ciara went about getting that position was both sneaky and underhanded. People don't forget things like that. I suspect she'll never regain the respect she lost with a large cohort of people because of the way she went about it at the time.

Last weeks anti male diatribe however was not just an appalling piece of radio, it was a new low.

Ciara attempted to make out that all men should bear some responsibility for the actions of a few of nutters. She was only short of suggesting we hang our heads in shame for not speaking up against male violence perpetrated against women.

It was an overly emotional, needlessly dramatic, illogical, irrational and nonsensical rant about men.

She made zero mention of the fact that statistically men are far more likely to be the victims of violence and violent crime then women. She also made out like women are completely defenseless victims while again ignoring the fact that domestic violence perpetrated by women, against men, has increased significantly in recent years, or at least the reporting of it has. Over 5000 reported cases in 2016.

I think she believes she's some kind of shock jock but her constant fake overly enthusiastic intonation and completely biased and often misinformed opinion combined with her arrogant style of presenting and total lack of experience all make the show sound, to me anyway, like really bad amateur radio.

I don't know what's happened to Newstalk. They used to be my go to station. I rarely turn the radio on now. I just use the listen back feature when I hear of something interesting which is usually on here.

I'm laughing at the support for Sarah McInerney now when she was vilified while working on Newstalk. With a lot of the same type statements being said about Ciara now.

Your response is equally predictable btw; but that doesn’t mean you can ignore all of the other valid criticism of her and the show.

I haven’t mentioned Hook in forever btw, and the last time I did was to say I grew tired of his sthick.

Yeah those one or two positive statements really is overwhelming support......

    Seriously?

Up next, coverage of the abortion referendum results and school patronage

Both of which have already been discussed at length on PK's show today

She might as well throw in something about kids' screen time FTW

I assume you haven't listened to much of Sarah on RTE, as her style is different there compared with fronting her own weekday show on Newstalk.

she is much more suited to the fact-based, understated style of RTE, than the free-wheeling, opinionated style at Newstalk. It's a pity more of the Newstalk presenters couldn't be more like that. it's barely above the level of the Adrian Kennedy Phoneshow at times.

Have listened. I didn't pick up any discernible difference in style.

Note - Her own weekday show on Newstalk was a joint effort with Chris O'Donoghue. I assume you didn't listen so much. :D

Sara is not very good on radio. She often stumbles over her own tongue, makes mistakes, and is too casual.

I thought she was a good contributor when she used to be a regular on Vincent Browne.

oh I did, I just couldn't be bothered writing it all out. his name is actually Chris Donoghue by the way ;)

When Claire Byrne was on Newstalk, I wasn’t mad about her presenting but when she went to RTE she def changed her style imo. Maybe Sarah is similar

Isn't it a bit strange that someone who wasn't considered good enough for Newstalk then gets a job straight away with the national broadcaster? I can't imagine that happening with the BBC

So was Ciara outraged by the 18yr old killed in Louth today? Or do we only get outrage when women are killed?

If you follow a couple of basic rules you’ll have every one of Ciara’s show pretty much sussed.

It’ll also save you the torment of subjecting yourself to it unnecessarily..

    It goes something like this

    Woman = Good
    Man = Bad

I think that’s about it. If you find any grey areas just work on the same basis that men are inherently bad, it’s all their fault and you’ll be there or there abouts.

Believe it or not, this is what seems to pass for professional radio journalism these days.

The killer is most likely a male. There is a problem with a lot of men and violence. How many murders has to happen for people to acknowledge this. Ciara and others are merely pointing out the obvious.

But Ciara only points it out when a woman is murdered? As male on male violence doesn't matter right?

Came on to ask did she mention Cameron Reilly on today's show? I assume not.

You left out the part however where she bigged herself and the show up with some comments about how she was the only female presenter on National Radio and hers was the only show highlighting the issue.

She's also developed this habit of referring to herself in the 3rd person with stuff like "you can text Ciara at......" (not "me", "the show", "the station" etc., but "Ciara"); as well as repeatedly telling us about all the texts she gets agreeing with her - I'd love to see these texts btw, and I'd really love to see the texts that the show gets that she ignores. It's all "Well said Ciara, I totes agree with you" and "Exactly Ciara, I couldn't have put it better myself", "Wow Ciara, I never thought of it like that" etc.....of course dropping her name into the texts she reads out.

She strikes me as simultaneously having both a superiority and an inferiority complex. She's definitely superior to all men though.

Just caught some of the show today. This is definitely a recent development, it grates on me so much I would have noticed it before. Her predecessor was fond of referring to himself in the third person as well.

I don't get how people who do that don't hear how ridiculous they sound.

I do think there is a conscious effort in her part to direct traffic to her personal twitter account.

They could just as easily have created and use a show specific one but they don't and she always mentions her details.

Which is fair enough, anyone with any sense would do the same. And obviously they need to mention their name at some stage e.g. "welcome to Hard Shoulder with me Ivan Yates". But "Text Ciara" is taking the pıss.

Hook did the same. He thought it great till the villagers turned on him with pitch forks. He deactivated it quick enough then

Would it be fair to say that about 80 percent of men have been convicted of murder, do you think? I presume that the remaining 20% simply haven't been convicted yet and these account for the #notallmen.

The mortality rate in this country must be comparable to the trenches in WWI.

Was there nothing on the programme today to be outraged about?

Ciara Kelly is not my favourite presenter but I think she is quite good at covering more sensitive topics. I didn't hear her interview with Catherine Zappone but I thought that the rest of adoption coverage was good.
