Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I think there should be another referendum on it every 25 years regardless of result.

The next referendum will be on legalising euthanasia

Apologies if this point has already made, but I think it makes for a more coherent, focused debate just having the two guys up there.

Oh you mean fact checking, heard him on liveline yesterday. He called a caller out on several inaccuracies she made about the proposed legislation. Of course if you use verifiable fact you will get free reign as you put it.

There's no constitutional ban on euthanasia, so no need for a referendum.

No it wont, there is nothing in the constitution prohibiting euthanasia. It's a legislative issue.

If you can direct me to the relevant section of the constitution you are referring to that needs to be amended. Id love to see it. Thanks.

My dad's a former RTE producer, says this last minute withdrawal of a debate participant and trying to substitute with someone else is a well known and ancient tactic of disruption. Basically, there's a whole bunch of stuff which is prepared well in advance of these programs - the graphics and bios to introduce and label each participant being an obvious example - and while it's possible to redo all this at short notice, it's a massive pain in the hole particularly for the production team. So essentially, they're willing to do it in cases of genuine emergency or unforeseen circumstances, but they understandably get pissed off when political entities try to do it for strategic reasons at the last minute.

In this case, I'd imagine that their refusal to go along with Steen has nothing to do with her personally or how they feel about the issue, it's sheer "you're screwing us over by disrupting the production so close to the air time, for no legitimate reason, so you can go f*ck yourselves". Had Steen been nominated from the beginning, they'd be far less hostile to it, but this is more of a "you're not going to have us scrambling around to accommodate your petty sh!te with almost no notice, feck off".

It would be a great thing for this country to discuss in a civilised manner, particularly for terminally ill patients. It might be more level headed than this abortion debate.

That doesn't need a referendum, thankfully.

Hopefully a government can have enough common sense to agree that if someone is suffering so much they feel they'd rather end their life on their own terms instead of letting some degenerative chronic disease slowly destroy them, we should allow them the dignity of that choice.

That depends on if they get the desired result on this one. If not they will proffer the same again in a few years

i *think* one of the referendums coming up in the next year or so, proposed by the citisens assembly, doesn't involve constitutional change, it would just be controversial to bring in without the say of the people

Hopefully not. Terminally ill people are going through too much mentally to make that choice.

No side seem to think there's a way of allowing for abortion for rape, ffa, incest.. But they'd oppose that as well. They just look silly and desperate at this stage.

Having watched numerous terminally ill family members be starved and medicated to death slowly, I'd happily make that call now for that not to be my fate. I'm 31 now if im diagnosed with something like terminal cancer etc in 20 years I'll be saying what I said all along.

I do not want to suffer

As Leo said - why wait til now to bring up these constitutional amendment options, what were they doing the past 30 years.

A lot of us have similar experiences with family and even friends.

I have also known friends who have survived cancer but in weak moments would have just wanted to die. So no I stand by what I said.

Being unlucky enough to have had several people in my life deal with terminal cancer and other conditions such as MS, I disagree massively. They don't suddenly lose their mental faculties. If I ever ended up in the position of my family friend who died for MS I'd hope I'd be afforded the wish of a dignified death she fought for and was denied by Irish law.

Having cancer and even being really sick but having a light at the end of the tunnel is very different from a terminal or degenerative illness
