And Carr lost the 3rd set. Not a bad run from him. Doesn't play the juniors much, hopefully he'll take a bit of form with him back out on the tour.

Venus is having a mare, playing like a club player.
    5-1 down after 21 minutes.

Commentators on Eurosport suspect a flare up of her condition, she really has not been herself at all.

    Yes, she looks very lethargic.
The match vs Kvitova took alot out of her.
She is waking up a bit though.

And Venus bagels Stephens in the second set!
Very topsy-turvy, but some very good points.

Bizarre match. Every time you detect a certain pattern, it meanders and goes off the other direction! Sloane is ahead but not sure she can live with Venus' power here. We'll see, I guess.

Awesome win by Sloane! Never saw her play better than those last two games.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,291 ✭✭✭✭Rjd2

First two sets were a mess, Venus was clearly nervous while Sloane as she has done before vanished for the second set.

However I really liked the 3rd set, Sloane in the last three games especially played some superb tennis to hold of Venus who smelled blood in the 10th game and then was on fire to break and serve it out.

Pleased for her to get to the final, tour is dominated by bombers, nice to see someone with her craft and defensive skills in the final.

Shame for Venus, fine year, but 2017 may have been her best chance to win a slam before she retires.:(

Was falling asleep on the couch for a lot of the match, I certainly woke up for those last few games! What fight from Sloane, she's fought harder on this comeback than she has for much of her career thus far. Feel bad for Venus, of course it can't be ruled out but it's gonna be hard for her to get slam #8 at this stage. To think she was two points away from beating Sloane!

Hoping for a Keys win now, but wouldn't want her to win the final. I'm happy she's starting to reach her potential but long term I don't feel she's a good investment, I'm always awaiting her next injury. God I sound like an a**hole :o

Interesting that Keys and Vandeweghe had never played before this Summer hard court swing, Keys leads the h2h 2-0. I also only found out today that Coco's real first name is actually Colleen :o

    Delighted with the women's finalists.

You'd swear people never seen a WTA game before being surprised by 6-1 0-6 type opening sets topsy turvyness. This is very regular type of dynamic and a lot of it is energy conservation by either player.

Hopefully the first semi final tonight is a short 3 set match so that Delpo and Nadal are on at a decent hour. Semi finals are starting at 4pm New York time, 9pm our time.

It's mad the way so many people have already given this tournament to Nadal. As if it is some forgone conclusion. As if Del potro couldn't possibly trounce Nadal like he has done before. As if Del potro isn't playing well or something. It is like a recurring narrative. If the same people on this forum that had already "given Nadal a grand slam" in the past , he would be on 30 plus grand slam titles right now. That is even before he gets to the final! Bizarre stuff

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 3,288 ✭✭✭mickmackey1

If Delpo is fit and healthy it's 50/50, that's a big if though.

Don't think many have said that Nadal has it won, plenty of talk of him been strong favourite which is and how lovely his draw has been.

So if Nadal beats Del Potro, its down to fitness. As if fitness was of no concern when he faced Federer, after a five set match. He has had two days full rest for Nadal. If Nadal beats Del Potro which is 50/50, I expect no credit will be given where credit is due. If Del potro wins, credit will be given where credit is due

lol ,I only know too well about these topsy turvy matches ,they are far too common in the womens game and its not a good thing.

Energy conservation in a best of three sets match ? Are you serious ?
These are professional athletes ,men can play 4 to 5 hours yet women need to conserve energy in best of 3 sets ,that makes no sense. ( I can see why Venus would perhaps need to conserve energy due to her condition though)

Nice one ,I will get to see most of the Nadal Del Potro match so ,looking forward to it .

Busta doing plenty of damage to the Anderson serve, or at least stopping Anderson from killing the points just after the return.

Yeah I don't believe the energy conservation thing either. To begin with Stephens would benefit greatly from keeping Venus out on court as long as possible.

    .

Same thing happens quite often in best of 5 matches. It's rare to get both players playing at their peak for all 5 sets.

Sometimes with best of 3 matches it could simply be a case that if you've lost the first set you have to turn it up in the second set or you're out. The player who won the first set relaxes a bit and then other player increases their intensity.

Fed was brutal and still should have led 2 sets to 1. It was a sick man beating an old man.

    .

I think they feel it's not worth chasing a set if they go a break down as they'll use a lot of energy for something they'll likely lose anyway, so they give minimal effort to conserve it for the following set.

For whatever reason it happens predominantly in women's tennis, you'd rarely see first two sets in men's tennis go 6-1 0-6 or similar, but happens so often on WTA tour.

    ***

Go Anderson, playing extremely nervous but hopefully loosens up a bit now.

Really stepped it up several levels last few sets. He can't be written off in the final playing like this.

    First set to Delpo.

It was rather unnecessary wasn't it?! I remember Delpo once catching a moth in his hand and placing him on the court side out of harm's way.

Despite being a huge court area ,Nadal is almost in the crowd when receiving serve.

Nadal always seems to up his game at the start of the second set after losing the first and his opponents game nearly always drops.

Given the hair situation one would assume a man but who knows.
