And Fed's streak of 20 GS sets in a row comes to an end.

That was a great title defense from Kerber then :pac: To be fair, Osaka is one of the worst possible first-rounders she could have got. Out of the top ten now, and with her chances of defending finalist points in Singapore slim, she may lose another 1,000 points before the year is out.

Good to see Ostapenko won her first match since Wimbledon, Cirstea up next.

Federer taken to five sets amidst rumours of a bad back, sets the stage perfectly for a fourth-round dragging at the hands of Kyrgios

In tennis there used to be some rule about picking and choosing your schedule to such a degree, I think it has more to do with how long you've been on the tour rather than age, although it probably coincides with being 30+

It is a combination. You get some leeway for being on the tour a while, some leeway for matches played and some for age.

I know Murray hits the age one from this January. Don't think he hit the others yet. The system can be looked at as to how quickly players are getting the ability to skip a major without being injured. If they are getting them at an early enough point in their career and simply not using them then I agree with Fed, the tour is fine and players should schedule appropriately.

I'm really worried about Federer's back injury. Is it still there? He shouldn't have too much difficulty come the next match but if he goes in to the second week playing like this he'll be smoked.

Kinda depends on how much he is telling the truth. He did say some of the rust was him being nervous about it as opposed to actually hindering him but that could easily just be talk. Hopefully it is alright.

Kyrgios struggling again, probably shouldn't be surprised by his temperament in majors this year I guess.

Edit and gone. Very underwhelming US Open so far.

    Come on Babos!!!

Put that dirty drug cheat away!!!!

Outside of her cheating her back turning and grunting is despicable.

Kyrgios temperament really is disgraceful. Smashing his racquet like a six year old and pretty much tanking once he went 2-1 down.

Sharapova really going overboard with the screaming here.

To be fair Kygios needs a coach that will tell him to cop the **** on.

Sharapova a screams are ****in stupid. Babos copying them out of spite I feel at this point.

Also if Babos does manage to win this it's not because she played amazing tennis.

She overachieved based on her ability.

But it's because the cheat is making a serious amount of unforced errors.

The droning noise in Arthur Ashe court is really annoying , I don't know if it's crowd noise being kept in by the roof or the ventilation system but it's pissing me off more than the screeching from Sharapova and Babos.

Euro sports coverage doesn't make sense either. It's not a FTA channel so anyone who has it, is paying for it somehow as part of a TV sub but if you want to see anything other than whats on the main channel, you have to pay again online.

Zverev dominant early against Coric in the battle of the supremely talented 20 year olds. Wonder how many majors these two will win between them over the next decade.

Only a few years ago Coric beat him en route to winning junior us open.

Coric has turned this right around to lead 2-1. He's been easily the more composed here.

Zverev like Kyrgios showing you can make all the tour finals you like but Majors are a completely different animal, think Sascha tries too hard in these from what I've seen of him in majors this year.

Im happy Coric won, simply because I don't see having Coric a chance to go far in this tournament and Zverev has, or had. But both of these players are too passive for me. If this is the future of men's tennis, then it looks ugly. As for Shapovalov, he looks to be a real talent. I wanted Tsonga to go far considering his draw, but now it looks like he well and truly won't win a slam.

The Fed/Nadal draw looks stacked. Apparently Federer was playing in central park in NY today to practice. All in good fun.

I'm happy as well as have Anderson backed at huge odds as per my first post in thread so his route has become far easier, Zverev was his nemesis in a couple of hard court tournaments in Canada and Washington so good to have him out of the way. Two 3-0's in a row a good sign.

You'd still think Cilic will never have a better chance of winning another one of these though from the bottom half. Isner ranked 10th is the highest ranked player he can face en route to the final.

Reckon the semi line up will be:

    Dimi v Fed

    Anderson v Cilic

With a Dimitrov v Cilic final

With the way things are going I'd nearly predict a Millman-Edmund final...

I am happy for Coric as well. I like Zverev but you want competition within the up and comers. Aside from Thiem no one in that age bracket has had close to the season that Zverev has had. For the first time in a long while there are players coming along that look like they will get a serious haul of trophies.

With Tiafoe and Shapovalov starting to come through as well there is a list of players that look to be big rivals for years to come. (Plus if Shapovalov has a great career McGee will be able to tell the young uns about the time he beat the great player (he beat him in a challenger back in May):p

Nadal or fed will still win it

I thought you said you didn't think Rafa was a factor on hard anymore?

If Fed was at his Wimbledon peak he'd walk it but that first round raised lots of fitness questions.

It's a bloodbath so far anyway, the more seeds to drop the happier I am and shorter Andersons odds will go.

Well yeah compared to his relative level he's not a patch on what he was, but who will honestly beat him here bar federer? It's a complete farce of a tournament tbh with so many injuries and absentees

And yet some of the youngsters are stepping up - Shapo, Rublev, Coric look real talents, in addition to Zverev.

Fed moving horribly in that 2nd set. Will a seed make the 2nd week?:pac:

I think this tournament is really there for the taking for the likes of Isner or Cilic or Youzhny to go and win.

You can still get 500/1 for youzhny on betfair if you believe that...
