I actually completely disagree with this suggestion. Handhelds are good for JRPGs, small indie platformers and quirky Japanese titles... but beyond that, it can be severely limited*. Don't get me wrong, I've played my 3DS a whole lot over the years. But I think diving into the PSN digital store will offer up a significantly greater mix of titles - there's no doubt that the variety of indie games on there alone is on a totally different level to what you'd get on the 3DS eShop. Going through handheld games I've played in the last three or four years, and I'd say there is far more commonality there then there would be across what I've played on PS4. I'd say it's just more of the games you personally like on handheld rather than it being a legitimately more varied selection of software :)

*obviously the Switch changes the game, because the Switch is awesome. Vita's also a pretty neat indie machine, although with obvious hardware limitations.

My DS game collection is at PS2 levels of obscene, and good stuff too, Infinite Space for example, I really have to jump back in there.
I must dust off the DSi XL and get playing... In between my workplace committments I might get... minutes of play??

So, Capcom are re-releasing Street Fighter II on a SNES cartridge.

Might be an interesting thing to follow in the long-term, if it's any way kinda successful it could open up other official releases on older hardware.

Also might set your SNES on fire, it seems.

With game consoles I have went trow stages with then all.

When I was younger I all ways had to travel to my mother and father business and I used to play my game boy a lot then and barely touched my ps2 at all.

Got into teenage years turned into 360 and ps3 gamer that went into my college years ended up with like 150 boxed games between both consoles. I had a 3ds and vita and only really played the vita when I had no work to do in college.

Then grown up working life I have a ps4 pro that is barely used and maybe gets a game played on it for 6 hours a month. My Xbox one s is used for sky go in the bedroom.

While my switch and 3ds get used the must when traveling to work on the bus I get a good hour every morring and a bit in the evening on them and I enjoy them none stop.

It's just depending on where your life is at stages what kind of console I play. I am back to when I was a child traveling a lot with my mum and dad to there business. I say in a few years i be having my midlife crisis ha. But we go trow cycles ha

When I was a kid I had a SNES and a Gameboy and played them to bits.

Teen years and college years I had a PS1 and PS2. In college I didn't play the PS2 much. When In the ten years since I left college in 2005 I bought a PSP, 360, Wii, DSi and a Vita. The 360 got played by far the most followed by the DS. In hindsight I shouldn't have bought the PSP, Wii or Vita, I didn't play them enough.

Last 3 years, I'm 34 now, I bought a PS4 at launch and then a Xbox One, mainly for the exclusives, when a good deal was going on. Play them both about the same, the PS4 a bit more I guess. In that phase I've been playing as much of not more as I was as a kid.

As I said a few pages back I'm now lucky to have a newborn. On paternity leave and have went back to the DSi as I can play in any room. The DS is great, decent enough battery life and it is very sturdy. I can just close it up to put it into standby and protect it, pop it on a table and come back to it when I can.

In the future my game playing is going to dip for sure, although in a couple of years I'll have a player 2, not sure how impressed the wife will be with that!

My Player 2 is far better at games than I am :(
On a brighter note, he uses my accounts on the XB1 and PS4, so I get the kudos for finishing so many games!
    I know, that's sad....

Anyone think Super Punch Out may increase in value after the snes mini is released?

I've had it on my to buy list since it came out (!), it's just been one of those games I keep forgetting to buy. Or go to buy and get distracted :pac:

Might try to pick it up in the next few days, it's currently in the region of 30-40gbp for a cart BIN. (although some ended auctions seem to have gone for as low as 19gbp)

Well I didn't take into account indie games, I use my PC for that. My bad there. The triple A space though is really boring me at the moment. We need more games like Doom, games that a developer wants to make and not games that a committee decided people want.

I can see the switch being an amazing console. Nintendo has focused all development on it and it's getting the strengths of the home console and handheld teams focused on it. Quality content has been coming to the system month on month and I'd already call the system essential whereas it's only this year the PS4 has gained a bit of traction with me.

It might increase in value if you buy it now. It'll definitely increase in value if you don't buy it though

What has the experience following the NES Mini Classic been?
Did Megaman 2 receive a bump in price following the console release?

Are you after a boxed copy or will an unboxed cart do?

Once available here for £30, which must be about €36 in local money.

That's a good comparison alright. I don't think I've seen any Megaman 2 carts going for their weight in gold just yet :pac:

Feck it, I need the game anyway. I found an old word doc from 2006 with a list of Snes games I had to buy on ebay and that was on it, so I guess it's about time :D

But, then, it's an official reprint and the Blanka one looks brilliant.

Right so, the best game ever made is Robotron and, maybe, just maybe, Raiden 2....
I know they both begin with the letter R but I reckon it could be a coinkydink.

A bottle of red wine and a large G&T had a lousy opinion and should be disregarded.

I was reading earlier about dual layer ps2 games and the trouble some people are having playing them on their consoles. Some are saying they can only be played on the phat, others saying the slim and others saying early slim models are the ones with the issues, later revisions are fine.
Is this a load of tripe? I struggle to believe that the best selling console of all time has particular models that simply cannot play some of the highest rated titles for the system. Do these people need new lasers or whats the story? Anyone have personal experience with the matter?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 34,752 CMod ✭✭✭✭CiDeRmAn

    Yep
Probably not as tragic as the original PS and it's laser woes, the PS2 suffers from all sorts.
Thankfully the replacements aren't too expensive, once you have the model number.
A good way to think of it is that the PS2 is an 18 year old DVD player, with precision moving parts, parts that wear out.
So replacements are a when rather than an if.
And most consoles with such drives are going to be susceptible to the same wear and tear, for example the Dreamcast.

Also, I lost my own gorgeous launch PS2 while a lightning storm was raging outside.
A strike nearby and the resultant surge banjaxed my PS2 while it was on standby, many tears were shed... man tears you understand...

I had trouble playing blue discs on my slim PS2, I'm sure it was Yakuza game disc that I was trying to play. Just refused to read, seemed to work okay on my phat ps2.
Not to do with duel layer I don't think it, just the post above made me think of it. Quick search says the CD had to spin faster than a DVD game.
