Thanks guys, that's what I was thinking. It seemed ridiculous that Sony would release revisions that weren't compatible. Surely the games would've just been released on two discs if that was the case

Sony consoles usually have cheap and awful optical lasers. It was a problem on PS1 and it was so bad on PS2 that a class action lawsuit was taken against them by the US government which they lost.

The PS2 is just a piece of **** in terms of build quality. I'm on my fourth model. CD and dual layer DVD9s are harder to read than standard DVD so the console would stop reading them first before getting completely knackered. Thankfully only a few games came out on DVD9 or CD but a few were crackers like the godly Gradius 5.

The PS2 isn't the only console with these issues. The Wii has a ****ty laser as well and has trouble with dvd9 games like smash bros when the laser is on the way out.

Anyway the people saying only some revisions be can play those games are talking garbage.

Ah man, you reminded me of how bad the PS1 build quality was. At one point every time I opened the lid there used be another bit of black plastic after coming off the spindle revealing it's brown skeleton underneath. Bad times

Sure the PS3 was dirt quality wise too, it too TWO sku revisions to get it even remotely reliable. The launch model had major overheating issues, laser lens issues, connectivity issues, the works. The Slim was better, but still had significant failure rates too. The Super Slim, while the cheapest in build quality terms, does seem the most reliable.

    Internal HDDs for all!

Haven't gone near a PS2 disc after installing one in my console a couple of years back. Only annoyance is taking the HDD out to load games on. Never did get it transferring over a network cable.

Indeed, definitely the way to go. The official hdd adapter though is an IDE based dinosaur, I think you can get modern clone versions that are SATA?

That Mario Rabbids game is really good. It and Breath of the Wild are easily the best games I've played this year. The Switch is certainly looking like it's going to be one hell of a console and Mario Odyssey isn't even out yet.

I'm a big fan of turn based strategy games since my Laser Squad days on the C64... But I'm just not that into the over the top micromanagement of X-com or the tiresome plots of Fire Emblem. So I'm glad that there's a nice game in the genre again where you can just get straight into the action.

I used this along with winhiips a couple of weeks ago. IDE to USB and the transfer speeds were better than i expected

What a game Laser Squad is. My all time favourite, on pretty much any machine.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

    Yep - PS2 SATA

That's them, also gives you far more storage capacity options (hard to get large IDE drives these days).

Was just playing a PS2 game on my launch PS3 the other day, could've sworn I heard the fan say "kill me, please."

Posted this on the Xbox Deals with Gold thread.

"Some serious classic games this week! On the phone so can't do fancy tables.

I'm tempted by Daytona USA, supposedly an excellent version, and Crazy Taxi. I hear a lot about Catherine, supposedly a bit mad. Is it good?

Edit - I may as well get Sega Bass Fishing too for the craic"

I'll have to dig out my ps2 again I think. On a side note, is anyone watching the match? Disgraceful yellow for Brady.

Haven't searched for it on my Xbox One yet but have found it online.

    That worked, thanks.

Edit: Hasn't appeared on the XB1 as being available for download yet...

I'm with Veruca Salt on this one, I want it and and I want it NOW!

    Found it!
Turned out Cidonalad had done something funky to the network.
    It's now, undoubtedly, installed.
Sadly, I can't tell as I am in work :(

Full disclosure, I'm pretty lousy at the game, I already have the HD version on the PS3 but, for whatever reason, Sony haven't elected to let it be a cross platform title with the PS4.

It's a pity the Dreamcast sequel never got an airing on any other format, it's still great though the controls need immediate adjustment before playing or simply use the DC steering wheel.

Going to see Terminator 2 3D this evening \o/

Couldn't care less about the 3D, but any excuse to see Robert Patrick and the Big Man duking it out on a cinema screen :D

I bought bass fishing and Daytona on my computer and neither appeared on the kids Xbox initially, no idea why, thought I'd misread and they weren't backward compatible, but then after about 10 minutes, as if by magic, they appeared.

I saw it Monday night and I went in with the same attitude you had but in fairness, the 3d was quite tasteful if that makes sense. Would totally recommend

It's odd, when I went searching on the XB1 the sale was there alright, including Bass Fishing, but no sign of Daytona.
Yet you could link to it, and now it lives on the XB1.

It's a pity the PC versions of Sega Rally and Panzer Dragoon don't make the jump as well.
Or some titles that have only ever lived on the Saturn, like Burning Rangers.

I went to see that a few years back when it got a limited 38mm re-showing in the city center somewhere. Who did I see in a few rows ahead? The o1smeister himself :)

Just watching old episodes of bad influence on youtube and they had an amstrad mega pc... Obviously short lived at the nice price of 999 sterling in 1993!
