I'd love to know why we didn't bring them to the airport for immediate return to France.

They arrived here illegally and yet we're now having to process them, pay to shelter them/treat them and undoubtedly everything else from here on.

The Haulage company should be 100% resposible for taking them and returning them with the requirement to have police stamped confirmation that they were returned.

Ireland doesn't control French immigration any more than France controls Irish immigration.

i.e. Irish authority to determine who France has to accept into its country is equal to France's authority to dictate whom Ireland has to accept into its country

Well given they rang the UK police (presumably when they discovered that the ferry wasn't gonna deposit them there), we might get lucky and they abscond over the border when they are offered their tent and voucher.

That's not how it works. Not France's problem once they leave there. The same as how, if the lads in the lorry decide to fly off to Germany next week, Germany has no ability to oblige Ireland to give them permission to come back in.

Ultimately no. That is a conflation of a general obligation with an EU wide agreement regarding processing.

Ireland's power to send them back to France because they travelled to Ireland from France is the same as France's power to send them back to Ireland (upon their return) because they travelled from Ireland.

Why?

If they claim asylum they will be put through the system.

If they qualify they will be given status, if not they will be given a deportation order.

Given they are Kurds apparently, I imagine they probably would qualify.

We don't actually have that many Kurds here AFAIK.
