There's tedious links and there’s tedious links but that link from The Chainsmokers to the smoking ban in France, complete with cartoonish French accents and cliched stereotypical phrases was as bad as it gets.

I’m happy to praise Ryan where it’s earned; but equally, I will criticise where it’s warranted.

What was the context for this bit?

Ryan promises “to be able to string sentences together” when he returns - actual quote!

I notice that another one of his Boards trigger words “intriguing” also worked in getting comment. If he comes up with "delicious" to describe something other than food or drink, I will rest my case.

Never been so happy to hear this shite song haha! Interrupted another marvellous piece of ''Gosh women are amazing now'' propaganda that Q102 seem to be obsessed with lately.

So just to get this straight, you believe Ryan is actively watching the thread and trolling the posters?

What prompted him to say it was he made a mess of what he was trying to say in the preceding sentences because he was having another episode where his brain and thoughts are moving faster than his mouth can get the words out…..which even his fans (and I am a fan of the show) and regular listeners can attest to. This trait was also featured in a Gift Grub sketch where the producer told Ryan to “finish your sentences” - is Ryan trolling Mario Rosenstock too?

You’ve historically defended the use of delicious outside of food and drink, though I think you did accede its usage outside of that area was pretentious - but do feel free to set the record straight if I’m misquoting you.

I like Ryan’s show. As I’ve often said it’s inoffensive mid-morning radio. That does not however mean that it’s perfect, or that he or the show are immune from criticism - or do you disagree?

If Ryan chooses to use some of his stock phrases and words he overuses and if you want to take that as evidence for him trolling I can’t stop you. He could of course just be using them as he so frequently does - there’s a phrase for such words that I can’t think of right now (not “stock”) where broadcasters etc. use/overuse the same word in speech and it could just as easily be this.

As for resting your case, what can I say if you have absolute belief that you are right? I disagree, for the reasons I have outlined - but we are allowed to have differences of opinion. It would be quite the about turn from the previous position if he is thread watching and trolling now.

I’m in the airport now and heading to London for the weekend so I won’t be in a position to reply for some time, but I hope you and all boardsies have a nice weekend.

As I keep saying if Ryan actually read this thread he'd have hired someone to help with his pacing and diction.

As Ryan is still away I’ve been listening to various podcasts and some Pat Kenny over the last 10 days. On Monday of this week I made the mistake of giving Martin King (sitting in for Ryan) a chance. It really is a testament to how bad broadcasting is in this country that King is on air - the only way I can describe it is if you were to create a new radio host from AI using the following prompt:

Create a new host for Irish radio taking the worst of Ray D’Arcy and Joe Duffy’s broadcasting “skills”, combined with zany observations and mannerisms, include plenty of terrible one liners and Dad jokes, a hint of double entendres, a taxi driver-like knowledge of Dublin and an urge to promote you and your wife’s podcast every 5 minutes (and mention that it’s sponsored Tankardstown House).

Ryan, I hope you’re enjoying your holidays, but please come back soon.

Emma B covering in the UK - an experienced professional broadcaster with a long career at the BBC, Heart and Magic amongst others. Sounds very natural and actually got relevant links between songs like referencing Tim Burton’s exhibition after a Killers song. Still awkwardly reading out the +44 text number on a U.K. only show but getting texts that must be from the uk for birthdays etc

I’m just curious if she’s getting texts from Ireland as the vast majority of text on Ryan’s show are from Ireland (I.e. is anyone from Ireland listening to the Virgin rather than Q feed?). It’s a very rare thing when it’s not a text from Ireland when Ryan is on duty.

I didn’t hang around too long - she didn’t mention the location of the texters. The music is really going back to the original Virgin days now. The killers - all these things I’ve done followed by New Order - Blue Monday. About as far from Q102 as you can get with it’s Abba and 90’s/00’s boyband stuff

Ryan back this morning and starting with Lionel Richie’s “All Night Long”. I don’t think I’ve ever heard any of Lionel’s (soulful or outright commercial) work previously being played by Ryan. I think it shows growth that he’s exploring new avenues musically since transitioning from RTÉ.

What the hell? He just started talking in the middle of the song. 🤷‍♂️

Japan holiday mention and he’s promising to tell us more later. He said when he mentions Japan people give him two responses: I’ve been, or it’s on the bucket list. Ryan then said his response to the latter is “you need to kick that bucket”. I’m not sure he know what the expression kick the bucket means.

Ryan just did a Bill Clinton impression. I wish he wouldn’t do his impressions, they’re not good.

Otherwise delighted he’s back on air.

He just referred to himself as “Tubridy”. 3rd person referencing is never good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,642 ✭✭✭Peter Dragon

Mother of God they just dropped Alphaville’s “Big in Japan” a few seconds into the song, skipping the signature intro. 🤷‍♂️ Not Ryan’s fault, but once again the producer/production team really letting him down.

A texter from Ireland texted in to say she woke up this morning and said “Ah, Ryan’s back today, it’s going to be a good day!”. I completely understand this sentiment.

Another texter (from Donegal this time) said that Fanad Lughthouse is better than Japan and Ryan promised to visit.

Ryan was in Connemara too, he said he has some big news - I wonder did he propose?

I too think he should return those monies btw but it’s not relevant to the show or the thread.

Listen to about an hour. Very much an Irish show. He's not speaking to the UK audience, how long does an audiences stay before they begin to feel left out.

He repeats himself huge amount, its like he's got something in his mind on a subject that it doesn't change or he doesn't move on.

He fumbled over his words with Clinton and Patterson, as such saying how hard it is to talk to a non-reader but meaning to say how do non-readers find the book they are looking for, but his mind is working far faster than his mouth and he speaks so fast he gets tripped up.

Again the fawning of how much "you've done for Ireland" and "as an Irish man I want to thank you", this is a short promotional interview with both for their new book.

He over uses the same few big words over an over again, as if he's just found them for the first time.

In fairness the show doesn't suit him, its not a relaxed breakfast show like the Full Irish, with a mix of music (both of his own taste and that of the radio station) along with audience interaction and it can't be the Radio 1 chat show that allows for a longer more relax chat.

Unless they are willing to allow him do the full Irish, I don't think this show will ever suit him. But to build any UK audience he needs to drop all of the Irish stuff.

Just one more thing .... when did they return that car

    So he's getting engaged.

Story 'leaked' by a jeweller in Clifden (of course) who posted about him requesting a ring for a special lady, before then taking the comment offline again.

Theres even a photo of all 3 of them standing outside his shop in the Indo.

    1000021855.jpg

I wonder if the ring isn't a freebie for the publicity its going to get the shop?

Ryan played “Green Day” just now. What a strange world we live in.

Engagement announcement - everything was beautiful and gorgeous.

Seems my guess was correct. I just had a feeling for some reason 🤷‍♂️

Well the NK crowd have previous form in this area……Ms. Garrihy just happened to have a photographer and press release ready for her ring selection. Quid pro quo and all that.

Ryan with a plug for CarFest now, old habits die hard.

Ryan name-dropping Ragnar and The Ivy Club (members only Dahling) yesterday and talking about how many lemonades he consumed on his jolly adventures around London yesterday.

Now hinting at Conor to buy him an engagement gift - suggested a Dahl drawing with a guide price of £20,000 at auction this week.

The various online sites and online editions have news of the engagement up now. Essentially the same piece in all of them with some very minor changes so no doubt it was a press release, but it’s a press release that reads like an ad for the jewellers. I won’t link them but you won’t have to look too hard to find them.

Have you seen the comments on The Journal? I know you don't think much of them. Have a look before the Delete button gets a workout and/or they are closed. And yes, Ryan is a lucky man to have found the love of his life. May he have long and happy relationship.

I toast his continued success at the top of his respective pile in Britain.

He's done a real Neil Prenderville.

Will the wedding be live on Q102 or are the rights going to be auctioned separately?
