    #MEGA MAKE EUROPE GREAT AGAIN

Interesting to hear how that goes down or what his style is like

Ryan sounds in good form today, talking about advance copies of books he’s received and theatre and gigs and movies he was at over the weekend and last week. He teased some big announcement/changes…..I wonder what they could be?

There was a slight slip when he said he had to go and see “Giant”, a play about Roald Dahl, but he deftly and and quickly assured us he that he genuinely wanted to see it.

Ryan played Guns ‘n’ Roses and said he was now rocket-powered and then inaudibly raced through the phone number. He’s now plugging The Names again, and his good pal Ragnar (I know who he’s talking about but as he only gave the first name a new listener would be clueless) . The show is slowly morphing into a book review show - but with a revolving and very limited set of books and authors on the recommendation list.

I wouldn’t be totally surprised if he’s moving to Times Radio. Virgin radio seems to be in a state of total flux right now - music playlists changing radically, staff getting axed to save money, etc. i realise this is pretty irrelevant if you listen on Q102 but it must have an impact eventually. If Virgin is going more rock in playlist it gets further away from the regular playlist of Q102. Can’t really see how this simulcast can go on forever

Recommendations for anyone who has just finished The Names by Florence Knapp. Wellness - Nathan Hill, Strange Sally Diamond -Liz Nugent, any Ragnar Jonasson, Unravelling Oliver - Liz Nugent, Atmosphere - Taylor Jenkins Reid, Skipshock- Caroline O'Donoghue. Warning on reading Ragnar Jonasson at this time of the year. Also, he has pre-release copies of the Caroline and the Taylor, so ordinary people will have to wait a few weeks. Going to be very difficult for people to get through that number of books. It's nearly fifty euro to buy the Taylor and the Caroline. Too many

Doubt that he has anything to gain by mentioning that. He obviously really likes that book and is trying to promote reading.

I see your point and agree on some levels - it was very strange for example to hear GNR this morning on Ryan’s show.

At the risk of repeating myself I do think there’s an element of a round peg in a square hole here with regards to the fit and Ryan would be more suited to a more talk-based show so maybe a move to Tines Radio would work - but that would be completely different from the Q format so not sure how this would work?

I’m all for promoting reading but I think the publisher is Hachette - who published at least some of his own books - so there’s a potential conflict of interest there.

it’s a minor quibble but he does have this tendency to fixate on one thing and then go on about it for months on end. He’ll do it with a book, a film, an actor……anything really.

We’re moving into that what is advertising and what is recommendation territory at this stage with some of this stuff which I personally find a little distasteful.

IF he was going to Times Radio the 2-4pm softer slot that Mariella Frostrup originally presented would be the obvious home for him. Currently Times Radio has 2 presenters- Fi Glover and Jane Garvey in that slot which is probably quite costly.

Quiet where him moving off Virgin would leave his Q102 hook up - who knows! Maybe he’d do a shorter Ireland only show from London in the mornings? 10-12 noon?

2 very different types of shows a day 5 days a week might be a bit much. Frostrup - now there’s a voice!

He addressed that this morning. He said that he has nothing to do with the book and doesn't know Florence. Florence did make contact with him to thank him for recommending The Names by Florence Knapp. He seems to be building up good relationships with a lot of the biggest publishers in the UK.

It’s Ryan’s birthday today - Happy Birthday Ryan!

Quick mention of “The Names” again, followed by a brief discussion on Black Forest Gateaux and how there’s a restaurant in London that does a very good one and he name dropped that Graham Norton invited him to lunch there and Graham paid and then that Phyllis (the lady from Galway) met him for lunch there and she also paid and then he made a comment about him never having to pay for lunch, followed by some guffawing. He’s not the most self-aware at times really.

OMD playing now, RDS showing Whitney Houston 🙄

Ryan just said “he chose to wore”. Hmmm.

Lots of Birthday wishes to Ryan via text, all from Ireland so far though. Another plug for “The Names” too.

I'm nearly finished reading The Names by Florence Knapp. Yes, he has mentioned it three times already today and it got four mentions yesterday. It's a very readable book. The book has an attractive cover and is not overly long. Said that it comes from a really good publisher, with agents who are willing to engage and work with readers.

Always good that the Irish public gets reminded about the 150k.

He probably thought his name wasn't mud any more, but that's it back in the gutter today.

Apologies, I though this was the RTÉ megathread.

I thought it obvious from his triumphant ascendency and domination of the fast patter radio as background noise in the UK would be some kind of repayment.

Mod - I'm sure Ryan was thrilled to be remembered by the PAC, but can you please take any further discussion of this to the RTÉ thread?
