To round off the day we got the almost obligatory Paul Mescal update, who Ryan told us is in a new movie (in which Paul sings) that Ryan hadn’t heard about until just now but it’s having its Cannes Premiere today. I’m a little surprised he hadn’t heard of it seeing as they’re good pals, maybe Paul was waiting until he was next in the studio to discuss it with him?

It’s an Irish movie so even though he hadn't even heard of it before today let alone seen it Ryan assured us it was going to be brilliant. I do wish he wouldn’t do things like this as it damages his credibility when it comes to reviews.

He spends most of his time in London. He does broadcast from Dublin on the odd Friday. He has even commented on how he's picking up a Cockney accent and speech. There are no specific results for his programme but the last book for station recorded was poor.

I have never heard anybody (except himself) refer to him as The Toy Man. I have 4 children who watched the Toy Show. And I know a lot of children.

I am going to guess that maybe one child, aged about 3, who couldn't talk properly, and didn't know his name, but saw him on the Toy Show might have pointed at him and called him that. Because most 3 year olds' language is limited. So Toy Show + Man = Toy Man.

I'm guessing maybe 1 child with limited vocabulary called him that one day and he tried to perpetuate it, but it didn't take off.

As I said, I have 4 children of varying ages. None of them have ever spoken about him at any time other than when watching The Toy Show. They certainly don't miss him. I'd say now that he's gone they wouldn't even remember his name if I asked them. And they have never referred to him as "The Toy Man".

I miss Gaybo from the Toy Show more than my children miss Tubridy!

It’s more likely that a parent would have used it, pointing him out to a child. Anyway, the title was in the newspapers countless times so he’s within his rights to use it, or reference it.

“It is not blood that makes you Irish but a willingness to be part of the Irish nation” - Thomas Davis

I thought it was an invention of the Radio Forum. Like Tubs, The Dufficer and Scary Byrne. While I'm here, I'll raise my objection to the word Movie being used on the thread. It's Fillum.

You mean in the puff pieces in tabloids and the likes of RSVP, evokedot.ie, and VIP etc? You do know these are written by the agency that manages him and are sent out en masse to all of these titles?

It is my opinion that “The Toyman” monicker was simply part of the construction of his brand, designed to leverage his hosting of The Toy Shoe into commercial opportunities. No-one called him that - it was even referred to as such in Callan’s Kicks review of the year in 2023 when he was referenced as “Ryan Tubridy, nicknamed The Toyman - only by himself”.

Regular listeners can attest to the fact that we get at least one of these stores a week, usually after the weekend.

Macca reference just now as Ryan plays a song from “Wings”! I forget who said it but someone said “Wings, the band The Beatles could have been….”

He's interviewing Vogue Williams now about her new book. Vogue "I'm not sure when my father died, 18 to 20 years ago". I thought that everyone would know the exact date of their parent's death. Or else it's just more bull from her.

Her sister came on and corrected her about her father's death. Actually was fifteen years ago. Apart from that I really enjoyed Ryan and Vogue banter and that they were taking the pee out of each other. Good story about them in the Devonshire and how they were trying to see who'd be the first to get a book published. Tubs going to write a crime story with Icelandic author Ragnar Jónasson.

I didn’t hear it but it sounds like somewhat of a manufactured conversation as both have already have had books published. 🤷‍♂️

Rather strange that you’d forget how long ago a parent passed away alright, I’d agree on that. I wonder was it an elaborate ruse to get Vogue’s sister on to subtly mention/promote their podcast?

    Vague Williams.

I meant that they were discussing who'd be the next one to release a book. Funnily enough, Vogue told him that she'd never write an autobiography, when she was on his Bookshelf, but now she's bringing one it.

Especially as she was just after writing in detail about it. As much as I love Vogue, it came across as being quite contrived.

I wouldn’t be a fan of Vogue’s but she is entitled to change her mind. especially when one considers the tax write offs available to artists.

Clifford is one of the better journalists working in the country - I’m surprised you only know him from O’Connor’s panel? He did stellar work on the Garda Whistlebower case many years ago for example and has been a regular on Matt Cooper’s show for over a decade.

Vogue definitely qualified at one stage as it was discussed on The Last Word much to the amusement of those discussing it at the time from a variety of perspectives - the host, the subject matter, and the no. of copies sold (from memory it was less than 300). Again from memory this was at least 10 years ago so she wouldn’t be on the current list, but she was of course talking about a future/recent project so I’m guessing if she qualifies it will be in next years list.

I can't see her name on any list. Even if she was on an old list, she has to apply for the exemption for each new work of art.

    It's really not!!

As I said I have 4 children ranging in ages and it would never have crossed my mind to refer to him as "The Toy Man". I wouldn't have referred to Gay Byrne or Pat Kenny as that so wouldn't have come up with it for Tubridy. It absolutely came from either a child with limited vocabulary, or himself/his agent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,637 ✭✭✭Peter Dragon

I am aware you have to apply for each work. She definitely was discussed as being on it - look this was from memory 10 years ago so there’s a chance I’m misremembering - maybe she applied and was rejected and that’s what was being discussed / mocked on The Last Word?

I’ve just googled it - the book was released in Sept. 2017 (I was out by 2 years) and was called “Everything”.

She's not a resident of Ireland now, so she shouldn't be able to apply now. Presumably you have to paying tax here to apply for the grant. She mentioned that she had to put in a glossary of terms for British readers🤣🤣

She “keeps a home” (as certain British classes say) here actually - in Howth. I know this because I read how she did a feature thanking Dulux Paints for “sponsoring” the repainting in some women’s magazine I was perusing in a waiting room. Vogue went into great and gushing detail about the various colours and how they complemented her busy lifestyle as a working mum, as well as being easy to clean. It must be some life not having to pay for such things!

The house was nice to be fair, not bad for a 3rd main residence (her and Spencer keep two homes in London alone!).

Someone asked if he mentions the Toy Show. Just told a story of Ed Sheeran surprising a girl on the Toy Show a couple years ago. I didn’t take any notice of it but since that question was asked I've noticed that he has mentioned the Toy Show every day. Talking to a celebrity reporter now who brought up Ed Sheeran's new EP. Wonder would he present a Toy Show on British tv.

Personally would welcome if Tubbs did end up presenting a toy show on the BBC. Corporatios like the BBC can offer him whatever category of Toys they deem fit from soft cuddly toys to just saying Hornby Train Sets, again ye know just saying. I'm sure he'd welcome an offer!

You'd want to be sure that the pitch is clear about what exactly a "toy show" is about as otherwise it might be confused with an adult themed production, although I'm sure our Ryan could well handle demonstrating a rampant rabbit.
