I was thinking of him doing a simulcast Toy Show on Virgin tv in Ireland and a British station. Huge potential for a Toy Show on British tv

So let me get this straight.

Some of you think Tubs should get to present a toy show on British tv?

Ok, so the viewing audience would wonder who this 50yr old man they don't know is, and why is he hosting a show aimed at kids?

Do you not think they might be more attracted to such a show if a presenter who was (a) younger and (b) actually known in the UK, especially to kids?

There would probably be 1000 candidates better suited to such a job than Tubs.

But how many of them would have Toy Show experience?

Hate to tell you but Patrick Kielty has a much bigger tv presence in the uk than Tubridy. If you are launching a uk toy show you’d go with the known name

He’ll be 52 next week actually.

I’ve grown to like his radio show but agree there’s zero chance of a UK Toy Show with Tubridy happening, regardless of his prior experience hosting them.

I missed the opening but am listening to the first song of the show now which is by Texas, the RDS is saying The Bee Gees are playing. 🤷‍♂️

Is this meant to be an automatic process, or does someone in the production team have to type it up?

I have seen loads of UK DAB channels where the text is so accurate. It literally changes to thr band and song within 1sec of the new song starting.

Oh I didn’t miss the intro, normally Ryan says hello before the first song. Slight production error there with music coming in during his opening, handled deftly by Ryan. I missed Alexander Skarsgard yesterday - was actually looking forward to that. Bank Holiday in the UK on Monday so only 4 days of Ryan next week, possibly even less with his birthday.

Soft Cell now and the RDS displaying Dolly Parton.

A thread regular explained it a few pages back. It’s supposed to be 100% accurate - and apparently the Virgin feed is, but for some reason the Q one is almost always off.

it seems they’re trying to correct it retrospectively / in real time - and still manage to mess it up - the Texas song was “Halo” and they’re saying it’s “Summer Son”and they’ve added in Soft Cell now:

Ryan commented how U2 were in London last night to collect an award and he wasn’t at said awards show, strange he didn’t get an invite. Stranger than Bono didn’t come onto the show to give his pal a ratings boost too - it seems we’ve come a long way from free Vespas and backstage passes to U2 gigs. Its not a good reflection on Bono as a friend that he didn’t drop in to say hello tbh.

I don't know if they did any other media except for the BBC. They were on the One Show on 22 May, talking about their Ivor Novello award. This bit suggests that the BBC got exclusive access.

"The group spoke to the BBC exclusively at the Ivor Novello Awards."

There's not. If there was it'd be done.

Very few children watch television these days.

Bono was actually on with Chris Evans this morning. Really good interview. I can understand why he mightn't have wanted Ryan to conduct the interview. It would have entailed asking quite a number of personal questions and might have put Ryan in an awkward position, due to his relationship with him.

kids watching the toyshow in Ireland do so because their parents grew up in one station land and basically push it on their kids , the UK is different.

Most kids watch the intro and then get bored

It would be relatively cheap to produce. Tubs was getting 1.7 million viewers for the Toy Show on RTE. Just say he got half of that in Ireland, plus two million viewers in the UK. That's three million viewers, plus a lot of sponsorship, pyjamas sets, goody bags etc.

That's not what exclusivity means when it comes to rights, many organisations covered the awards, pre, during, and post.

What “the group spoke exclusively to the BBC” means in that context is it was an interview with the BBC, not a post event Q and A or a press conference attended by multiple journalists representing different media organisations.

That’s a pretty big snub tbh, I actually feel bad for Ryan now. Ryan genuinely didn’t appear to even know that Bono had been on with Chris as he said he suspected they (U2) took the first flight out of London this morning. Poor form from Bono in my opinion, and Chris to at least not mention it to Ryan that Bono would be on the show.

Bono was in Cannes when Evans interviewed him.

So the BBC don’t have exclusivity over Bono/the group then?

Either way, he didn’t talk to Ryan and Ryan seemed completely oblivious to the fact that the host of the show that precedes his had interviewed Bono. If he was only engaging in cross station promotion at a baseline level he could have said something like “My colleague and friend Chris Evans interviewed Bono earlier this morning (week?) and you can find that interview on the Virgin homepage of YouTube” etc. which is what you’d expect in such circumstances. But Ryan seemed completely oblivious to this. As I said earlier I felt a bit sorry for him, it’s like he’s being excluded.

Would have been very awkward for Tubs to interview him. The film is very personal for Bono. I don't think that he's doing any interviews with the Irish media due to the nature of the film.

It seems Ryan has been jettisoned by Bono. I genuinely feel a bit sorry for him being excluded like this. Then again there’s many who would say that being ignored by Bono is a blessing.

This week, I finished The Names by Florence Knapp. A great name, beautiful cover, and perfect length meant this was a great start before a word was read, and things got better from there. I’ve spent a lot of time this week telling everyone about this book, as it’s a rare thing to be able to make such a general recommendation that is highly unlikely to disappoint anyone.

Am reading this book on foot of Ryan's recommendation. It's a really emotional piece. He was raving about this book for a long time, after getting a proof copy. If you like Gone Girl or The Girl on the Train, you'll like this. Could end up being a massive seller. It's well worth reading and is not too long.

What’s his show like these days? Is it still this rapid fire monologue in between songs as it was when the show first started or has it calmed down a bit?

I wonder also how “successful” is it- will Ryan be moving up in the UK radio world or is this show where it’s at for him?

Certainly don’t want to see him back on non-syndicated Irish radio and especially not Radio one- but after that I couldn’t care less what he does.

It’s an inoffensive mix of 80’s ‘til present day hit music combined with celebrity interviews and book and film/tv recommendations - it’s perfect mid-morning background radio and unlikely to cause offence to anyone staying away from meatier topics. It’s not wholly different to his old Radio 1 show but with much more music and far less chat.

His pace of delivery increases and decreases variously and while I’ve kind of grown used to it I do prefer when he’s calmer, more measured, and employs a slower delivery. There’s a marked improvement in enjoyment when he’s making an effort to speak more slowly.

The show format doesn’t allow for long monologues or indeed interviews and said interviews lose some impact due to so many breaks happening while the interview takes place - which detracts from the enjoyment and engagement of the show. A lot of the interviews are pre-recorded and the breaks are even more obvious in those. I’ve often suggested on this thread that allowing Ryan to talk more would add to the show but the format doesn’t really allow for this, sadly.

The show does have a feel of catering to an Irish audience first and foremost and the uk audience is very much secondary. Almost all of the text messages to the show are from Ireland for example, and Ryan (seemingly forgetting his broadcast location) will often say things like “childer-idden” in a Dublin accent or refer to uniquely Irish things without explaining them or offering any accompanying context which must be somewhat of a mild irritant to any British listeners who have tuned in. As an Irish listener listening in Ireland this obviously doesn’t bother me hugely but I am aware of how strange it might sound to say someone not familiar with Ryan listening in London.

it’s not perfect but on the whole I’m enjoying it. It could be a lot better with some tinkering around interview and monologue length and less music - but these are things which are likely beyond Ryan’s control given the station and the format.

Thanks for the (very detailed) reply- sounds like it still isnt for me- I hate “pre-recorded” on live radio- just a thing with me- I guess you just can’t beat Gerry Ryan or Gay in their radio heydays - everything else just seems to pale - John Creedon (when I get to listen to him) is probably my fav style of radio show these days- I used to love Ronan Collins lunchtime show if off work and driving around Ireland on holidays - always a treat.

If he has an audience and makes a living then great for him and sounds like you’re enjoying it too overall. Cheers
