He certainly has the makings of a counter culture icon, if he can get his buffering delivery under control.

He's a joke of a presenter in the format he's working in. Totally unsuitable. He's in year 2 of this project. It's a failure. He's a failure (in this version of his career). He's a dead man walking.

Noel's new job is to get Tubbs outta there in a face saving way.

The amount of wumming on this thread is off the scale. "His inevitable UK talk show" 🤣🤣🤣🤣

    Barely anyone knows he's there

This is a little bit off topic, but I was searching for a particular photograph of Ryan to post in a different thread and it turns out that Chat GPT has now embraced Boards as a source of information 😁.

He seems to have made quite the effort to curtail the pointing since his move to London - I wonder if it’s as a direct result of the pointing thread?

If these threads had any influence he would have sought professional help to temper his speaking pace and improve his general diction.

But London may relish his hyper babble so as long as he's smashing it there then it matters not. We've lost one the true greats of Irish broadcasting, a true wit of the Irish mind and an indubitable bastion of all that's best of Irish values.

Now I must get back reading this chapter about haughey in the 1980s.

He's actually a lot happier over there. He was exhausted from presenting the Late Late and needed a change. He's definitely been re-energised since leaving and it has translated into producing a good quality show on Virgin and Q102. Can tell why he became such a big star on RTE. He really has landed on his feet. This is from an article earlier in the year.

“When a job doesn’t feel like work, you’ve hit the jackpot!” Ryan then thanked his colleagues both in Virgin and in Q102 in Dublin as well as his loyal listeners for all their support. “Here’s to another year of loving life and always erring on the side of joy,” he finally added.

He must be delighted with how things have turned out. My only criticism of him is the number of recommendations he gives out. He recommended fifteen books this week. Very difficult for people to keep up and read that number of books in a week. He's putting too much of a financial burden on people. A lot of the books are new releases, so wouldn't be available in libraries. Too expensive. Just worried that it could be a turn-off for some listeners

I'm happy for him, he's living the life as free as a Trafalgar Square pigeon.

One persons crumbs are another's gold.

Just in. A drunken tale from ladies visiting York there. Ryan sounds very relaxed this morning, not as rushed or exited as he gets on occasion. It was a very smooth delivery. My only complaint was the segment was too short.

The RDS is all over the place again. It’s showing Queen playing now when it’s Bowie, and the previous song was by Imagine Dragons, but not the song they played!

On a related RDS matter - is there a way of checking the Virgin v the Q102 playlists for the same show? There’s been a few very Irish bands/songs played over the last few weeks on the Irish/q feed that I’m quite sure would mean nothing to a British audience, for example The Fat Lady Sings “Arclight” - there’s been others that have raised my eyebrows (The Stunning) as I can’t imagine them bringing played on UK radio.

if he is loving his current life so much why is he still picking at the scabs of his previous life with numerous FOI requests?

Just before signing off Ryan - on the advice of a person he was reading about who had been to every country in the world - recommended The Philippines as the most beautiful country in the world and the best place to visit in 2025.

It is a beautiful country for sure, particularly the less built up islands with their beaches being amongst the most beautiful I’ve ever seen. The cities are like many large Asian cities however with very little to distinguish one from another. It was a short feature that would have benefited from a more in-depth discussion.

Ryan admitted he hadn’t been himself - maybe he could stop over on his way to Japan - if he goes?

Both can be true - he can be loving his new life and also want to scratch the itch of the affair.

I personally think him continuing to dig that particular hole is a mistake on his part but he’s free to do so if he so desires.

mentally you can’t move on if you are still obsessing with your past life

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,273 ✭✭✭Peter Dragon

    Maybe he can compartmentalise?

Again, I think it’s a mistake that he’s doing this, but he’s his own man and can do so if he wants.

I also think he’s over-egging things a little in his descriptors of his London life but I’m enjoying his radio show either way….and that’s really all that matters on this thread isn’t it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,957 ✭✭✭GSF

ok why is he plugging all these books that say the opposite then!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,273 ✭✭✭Peter Dragon

I’m not sure why you’re asking me? I’m not affiliated with him, I don’t represent him, and I can’t read his mind.

Perhaps you should email or what’s app the show and ask him?

Was there any Diary this week? I don't see anything on Evoke.

I’m just replying to you because you replied to me 🤷🤷

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,273 ✭✭✭Peter Dragon

You asked a question. I replied. You asked further questions. I also replied to those. I can’t however provide an answer as to his motivations as I’m not the man himself - I hope you understand?

I’ve also frequently stated that I don’t approve of the things he’s done that required the move to London, but as one separates the art from the artist I am enjoying his radio show. I’m not a super-fan who enjoys everything he creates regardless of quality (for example I’ve never read one of his books or listened to him on other formats), but I like the radio show - that’s really the sum and height of it!

I’ve stated I agree I do feel he’s over-egging things re. London and I also stated I don’t think digging up things from his past is the wisest move so I’d suggest we likely agree on the surface at least more than we disagree on this. I’m not sure what else I can do?

If you’re genuinely curious as to his current motivations why not ask him? He replies to listeners questions on an almost daily basis so I’d imagine he’d get to yours pretty quickly.

yes fair enough. As a uk based Irish person I’m not seeing much chatter about him but that’s mainly because Virgin is an also ran station network here way behind BBC, Global and Bauer. You won’t hear it on in shops, waiting rooms, cafes etc

I’m not sure anything he does on his show is going to make much of an impact on his audience ratings so he might as well enjoy it while it lasts. I just can’t see it lasting for ever given the Rajar issues Virgin has and it’s celeb heavy roster of talent

I bought The Names by Florence Knapp, on account of his recommendation. He called it one of the books of the year and a life changing experience. I'm only a third of the way through it and it's a really raw, emotional novel. I'm enjoying it though. He seems to have great contacts in the industry and has a real eye for spotting new literary talent.

MOD NOTE: @Peter Dragon and @GSF it’s looking like a personal discussion between both of you at this stage and is renting more to Ryan himself than the show. Maybe take it to PM please.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,273 ✭✭✭Peter Dragon

I’ve a small mountain of physical books and a lot of unread digital ones on my kindle that I’ve promised myself I’ll read before buying another book but I’ll keep an eye out for this. Thanks for the heads up, my sporadic listening in recent days caused me to miss this.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,273 ✭✭✭Peter Dragon

There was, yes; though it had nothing to do with London - perhaps that part of the title should be removed at this stage?

did he say something about the Toy Show on the show yesterday?

    ______

Just one more thing .... when did they return that car

Whilst I didn’t catch that yesterday (I didn’t listen to the whole show) he frequently (3-4 times a week) mentions both it and the Toy Show, quite what the Brits think of that I’m not sure. I can’t actually think of a full show I’ve listened to that he didn’t mention one or the other tbh.

Getting Tubs to present a simulcast Toy Show broadcast across Britain and Ireland seems like the biggest no brainer in years. Is still loved here as the Toyman and has built up a big audience in the UK. He told a story yesterday of being in Brighton and how two Irish guys in their twenties ran down the street calling him the Toyman and wanted a photo with him.

Yet another instance of life imitating (p)art(ridge) for our Ryan

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,273 ✭✭✭Peter Dragon

Another tale of how he was spotted in public was told this morning, along with a very long story about spotting Tyler The Creator in Carnaby Street yesterday (even though he had no clue who Tyler was) and how that made him super cool in the eyes of his daughters as he once collected them from Longitude where Tyler was performing, followed by a story about “my friend Anthony Horowitz” who was decrying young people’s inability to read books over 300 pages - given Ryan’s thoughts on long books I hope Anthony never broaches that particular subject with Ryan! He’s in good form this morning to be fair.

The RDS is, as usual, all over the place however.

I suppose the U.K. version could have subtitles on it
