Shot an 88 gross in our weekend singles for my first time breaking 90 strokes and my best score since I joined a club back in April. Interestingly I always imagined breaking the 90 barrier would feel like I played amazingly and didn't make any mistakes but I left a lot of shots out there with a couple of nasty hooks off the tee, including one OB, and a couple of duffed chips so it could have been even better. Mad to get back out and see can I do even better. Is this why people say golf is so addictive??

Haven't posted on these threads in a long time, mainly because it takes so much time. My game had been slowly deteriorating for years. Was off 12 around 2013 or so, then slowly drifted all the way out to 17 despite getting lessons and practising with the game never quite clicking.

Reached a really low point with my driving. It really was terrible and was wrecking my game. Poor snap hooks, skying shots. Regularly playing 3 off the tee, or miles back and forcing it with woods and long irons. Out of holes before getting near the green. Utterly demoralising.

Then last year I had a series of lessons. Slowly but surely things started to improve. But still not competing.

This year I am finally getting back to consistent decent rounds. Still have more than my share of poor shots/decisions but thankfully rarer and improving.

A couple of months ago I had one of those rounds were everything felt easy. Shot +12, 84. Could have been even better. Finished second in the comp. First time winning a prize for a few years. It was my best round as far back as the app goes, so it was quite special.

Then in June I shot a 73 nett (90) off the back sticks in the medal. It was a grind as the wind was strong. Doubled 16 and 18 and felt like the one that got away. But to my amazement I later found out that I had won the comp! It was the first time in 7 years as a member that I ever won any singles comp. Two golfing ambitions completed. Win a comp and win a major...

Then last Sunday shot another 84. Managed to double bogey the 120 yd index 18. But I got 40 points and won my category. Three prize wins in around 2 months!

Then yesterday played Arklow. Nice links course. Very rarely play links and it was breezy enough. Decided to play strategic golf. Lots of irons off tees. Front 9 was incredible- 6 pars and 2 bogies. Only blemish was when I thinned a wedge into a greenside bunker. Impossible shot. Had to try and get out sideways. Took me two goes and scratched the hole. 20 points, happy days.

Lost the mojo a bit then. 5 consecutive bogies from 10. More of a battle. Then hit worst drive of the day on 15. It's a tough par 4. In right rough. Didn't hit a good second. Knocked down a provo then in to lake. Thankfully found first ball but poor lie. Connected far better than expected and thought I had gone OOB behind green. But it was just in but awful lie. Hacked out but couldn't get up and down. Scratch. Looking back that scarred me, completely knocked me out of the zone.

Then doubled the next after putting third shot in drain beside green. On 17 hit a decent drive but then thinned a 5 iron into the cabbage. Reload. Managed to salvage a double.

Then on 18 wild drive right. Tried to get back on fairway with 5 iron. Was just a couple of yards short. In the long stuff. Hit a good recovery to just off the green. Chip was decent maybe 10 feet. So had a chance to finish with a par. Gave it a good go but ran a few feet past. Routine putt back but stabbed at it and missed. Another double. 29 points after 14. 32 after 18. 24 hours later and it still hurts.

It was lining up to be a very special round.

My game is in a great place. Down to 14.4 now. Was 16.7 at one stage last year. So really decent progress. And 6 of my last 8 rounds are counting towards my WHS. After next week I have a long run of free goes to get down even lower. Really feel like it will happen but I'm playing golf long enough to know that it can all change in an instant.

Target now is to get to 13 by year end.

Welcome back Barnaboy, still remember you playing great stuff with the society many moons ago.

Hope the return to form keeps up

Won long handicap matchplay 3&2 last night. Unreal weather for golf and very few people on the course. Started poorly by losing the first two, then played reasonably solid but my opponent had a poor back 9. He left the door open a couple of times and I was able to make the putts. Crucially he only won on one of the 5 holes he had a shot on. The round of 16 is up next week, hopefully, the weather holds.

Thanks for the kind words. Another great round last night. Shot 84 again (+11) at St Margaret's. 8 pars, 9 bogies and a double. 6 pars on back 9. This despite my pitching being awful. Bladed at least three times. Down to 13.8 now.

Been playing some pretty steady golf lately. Consistency shooting mid 80's gross, even though I don't feel like I'm playing great golf.

    Last 7 rounds - 85, 85, 83, 86, 87, 84, 86

Driving is a lot better then it has been. Still have some pushes, but significantly less. Hit two 300+ yard drives yesterday, and went about 100 yards past the long drive marker in the weekends scramble (which I wasn't playing...typical). Putting is pretty good as well.

Irons are hurting me a bit though. Had multiple short approaches (within 100 yards) where i fluffed the shot, and either ended up way short or in a bunker. Will definitely be working on that over the next few weeks.

Standing on the 18th tee 4 over and walked off with a triple for my second 79.

Started with a bit of a pull into the left trees and took an awful kick left of about 50yds. Fluffed the recovery but had a gap to punch onto the green, clipped the right edge of a tree(towards the fairway) and it hit off a cut off stump and managed to come back left 🙄 then failed to get up and down through sheer anger. First time I've scratched a hole in a long time.

Brilliant round, well done. Focus on the first 17 rather than the last.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,939 ✭✭✭coillcam

Had 85 for 71 nett off 14 today in presidents round 1. Same gross as last week.

Started with back to back doubles before sinking back to back birdies. Driving was great and scoring irons were excellent with 7/18 GIRs.

The 5x doubles and closing 3 putts on 17+18 left me incredibly frustrated walking off the course. Though on balance it was a great round for me. Index drops again and now sitting on 12.2. All my 8 scores are recent so unlikely to drift out this year. The only way is down (hopefully).

Shot 77 at the weekend for 38 points resulting in a nice cut for me to 7.6 which is my lowest index since I got back playing last year so i'm delighted with it. As usual though i'm left rueing what might have been. -2 through 4 and about 20 yards short of the green on the par 5 5th I was thinking i'd a good look at a birdie and par at worst. Short game is one of my strengths so i was confident, maybe over confident as i tried to play a one hop and check shot which i partially bladed. Was on the green but long downhill right to left putt that I 3 putted. Followed that with another 3 putt to go from -2 to +1 in a flash. I struggled a bit for the remainder of the front 9 but managed to avoid any big mistakes and did well to bogey 8th after a decent drive ended behind some overhanging branches. Awful hooky shot off the tee on the 9th was behind a tree too but managed to get out with a bogey. Started the back 9 well though made a right mess of the 12th after a good drive and another 3 putt. From 14th on i played well and really should have birdied either the 14th or 15th after getting two very good looks at a birdie. Poor putt on 16 for a par but finished strongly with a simple 2 putt and was greenside bunker in 2 on the 18th, lob wedge to about 2ft for another birdie to finish. My arccos stats for the round below for anyone interested in that.

I'm in good form at the moment but my chances to play golf are about to diminish drastically as our first child is due in the next week or two. I'll probably only get another 2 or 3 comps in before the season ends depending on how long qualifying rounds stay in place at our club. Set a goal of getting to single digits before the year started and have done that so am happy either way.

Have a longterm goal of shooting level par gross (or better!) in a comp.

Playing well yesterday and was standing on the 18th tee level par. Hurt my finger out of nowhere somehow coming down 17th fairway which made it difficult to grip the club correctly (swelled up! maybe an insect sting or something?) not being able to grip the club starting making me push the ball. Finished with a double bogey on the difficult last hole and +2 total 😣 Feel like I'm getting close though!

Cahir at weekend playing off 18.

    Par 71.

    Front 9 41 strokes.

Back 9 bogey on 10th par 4..9..thanks to water..on par 5 11th..7 on par 4 12th thanks to same water on opposite side.

So 21 strokes for 3 holes gave 62 gross after 12 holes.

Then something really weird happened..dont ask me what.

Final 6 holes are 24 for par.

    Went par..birdie..par..par..birdie..par for 2 under gross 22.

    Finished 84 gross..66 nett..5 under nett.

    WHS from 16.6 to 15.5

    Still in shock 😂😂😂

Great score Bob. I will say the back 9 did play incredibly easy (not to put the score down obviously!) with the toasty fairways adding 40/50 yards extra to some drives and with the back 9 being far more open

Some of the scores in were frightening

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 420 ✭✭GandhiwasfromBallyfermot

I posted here last week about how I shot my best ever score of 88 gross for my first time breaking 90 strokes. Well I followed it up the weekend just gone with an 81 gross, 8 under for my nett, and that score included hitting two balls out of bounds! Don't understand what happened other than every shot I hit from 160 yards in was perfect, still in shock with the score! Played the back nine +2 gross, if I hadn't hit a ball OB on the 14th I would've played it level par.

It was a crazy weekend for scores in fairness considering how dry the course was but even with a PCC of -1 applied my index is gone from 17 to 15!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,052 ✭✭✭bobster453

    Yep.Winner was 68 off 10 so 58 nett.

    That is serious shooting.

Won second round of our club doubles last thursday.

Struggling with a bad back the last 3 weeks but had committed to playing this game, taking a break for a few weeks to rest up.

Played reasonably okay. The game was tight enough. Myself and Partner were off 8 and 10 respectively, the lads were off 28 and 24. So a pile of shots for them. We dove tailed nicely. Lost first hole to a par from the 28 handicapper. We birdied 2, 3, 6 and 8 to go three up. The lads won 15 to bring it back to 2. Finally put it to bed on 17. They made us work seriously hard for it. we were -2 for the 17 holes.

Dovetailed nicely with my partner, had some bad holes. First 2, then birdied the holy grail 3rd hole. Dross for 4 of the next 5 holes. The exception a birdie on 8. Played decently from there. Putting was very good. Started to use the line at the hole for putts I felt I could make. Worked a treat

Hi I have played a number ofcxasual rounds and recorded them on HowdidIdo. None of them are showing on the list of rounds but all my competition rounds are there. Anyone know why this may be?? Thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,157 ✭✭✭✭callaway92

Do you mean you submitted them in Golf Ireland? Where were they played? The handicap secretary/competitions secretary of your home club might just need to approve them (pending on your courses policy)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 211 ✭✭Baoithin66

In my home club. I'll chat to the competition sec. Thanks

84 on Headfort New in a very windy day yesterday.

    11pars

    3 Bogies

    3 Doubles

    1 Triple

After the single double on the front 9 and sitting at two over on the 9th I hit the flag for birdie and it didnt drop. Close championship was just played so greens were fantastic but very quick so it ended up 6ft instead of what would usually be 3-4ft and lipped the one back to finish +3 for 9.

Wind caught the 4w and pushed me just at the tree on the edge of the fairway but took a horrible kick 90° right into the trees leaving me a chip out, then flew the green wit the 54° and couldn't find it. Took a drop from a red stake I didnt even know was there and gout out with a 6. Good result from a bad break but couldn't shake the frustration and made a mess of the par3 thats normally an easy bogey at worst. 2 more bogies and a double on the way in stopped the good score. First ever Captains quali tomorrow and a similar score should get me into it.

I'm in the form of my life right now. Can't get enough of it!! After finishing my last round with 5 straight pars, took up where I left off. Easy par on 1, then almost holed a bunker shot on 2. 6in putt for par. Then went par, bogey, birdie, par. Level par after 6! Then the inevitable return to reality. Two steady bogies. Standing on 9 at +2. Index 18 par 3, only 110yds. Knocked down tee shot. Decent pitch, then 3 putted for an out of nowhere double.

Doubled 10 as well after a poor second left me hacking out. Took a good 8ft putt as well. Has to battle through the next few. But settled down with a nice par on 13, then again on 14. Stupid double out of nowhere on 15. Then moment of the day, 4 iron on par 3 16th. Absolutely flushed it. Came to rest 18in from hole. Heart was in the mouth as it rolled out!

Just missed birdie putt on par 5 17. Then striped a drive down 18. 110 to the flag. Thinned wedge into bunker. Bit heavy out, left a long putt for par. Decent effort but about 3ft short. Then missed the short putt for a sour tasting double. 84 in the end.

    Down to 12 now

Won my round of 16 long hc matchplay 2&1 this evening. Hadn't played for a couple of weeks. Definitely felt rusty but made enough pars at the right time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 918 ✭✭✭higster

HC index in and around 23 all year but down to 22 after a few decent rounds. Cannot break the 90 mark for love or money, have won 3 of 5 society outings on away courses with 40+ points but still just above 90 shots and cannot get a consistent <95 on home course…and then out of nowhere…

40 shots on the front 9 on my (what I consider tough) home course. Started with bogey, double bogey and was thinking well here we go again and then par, bird, bogey, par (index 2), par, par, bogey (lipped out). 4 pars and a bird, unheard of. Driver, around green and out of sand (once) very decent and putter on fire (one 3 putt on the 9th and 5 x 1 putt). Long approach still needs work. 26 points. Put it up on golf Ireland and 1 shot drop to 22 (was hoping more).

Unfortunately par 5 18th hole is being played as a par 3 due to work going on. Started lovely with 2 pars. Then 2 double bogeys and again was thinking oh shite. But my playing partner calmed me down with one piece of advice (stop leaning back trying to scoop the ball and get aggressive like had been all day). Got better with a bogey and a par. Then totally screwed up 16th index 1 with 2 stupid shots for a triple followed by a double. Pared the now par 3 18th. 22 points. So 44 on the back but add on 3 or 4 shots for the 18th to make it par 5 score (usually do well on that hole) so in reality a 47 or 48. Even if scored scored a 9 on the last would be a 90. Again putter on fire (no 3 putts and 3 x 1 putts), driver very decent and short game good. Approach was crap (any distance).

Anyway, delighted and excited. 46 points total. Cup me and 3 buddies play for each year coming up so here’s hoping.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,939 ✭✭✭coillcam

Back to reality this morning. 24 points off 14. Lost 3 balls off the tee. Every other drive was piped. The rest of my game was well off. A couple of nice approaches and chips the only highlights. Missing a weekend and some practice plus a couple of poor nights sleep. Saw enough to make come back anyway.

Bit of a weird day today. Shot 92, nett 79 in the first round of our president's prize. Stroke play off the back tips. It's an animal of a course from them.

In normal times I'd be happy with a 92. But I am in unbelievable form. First time in 6 rounds not to post a score in ghe 80s.

It was there for me again. The good stuff. My irons continue to be solid. Highlight of the day was a striped 5i approach to 13. Put it to about 6ft and drained the birdie putt. Chipping, bunker play and long putts good.

Bad stuff- my short putting is killing me. Missed putts inside 5ft on 1, 3, 7, 9 and 15. Driving was iffy but in truth didn't get me in too much trouble.

Awful run from 12 to 15. Decent drive then blocked 4 iron into hazard. Followed it with another 8 iron into the same hazard. Then 8 iron just over back of the green and chipped in for a 7. Could have been much worse. Then had the birdie on 13 already mentioned. Hit another decent drive on 14. 80 yds to front. Boned wedge into hazrd and escaped with a 6. Awful second on 15, lost ball into cabbage on left. Ended up with a 9 after a 3 putt from no more than10 feet.

Bizarrely after all that it's going to mean another handicap cut due to the correction for the 9. Don't feel like I deserve one!

Just hope I can get back to the good stuff next week. Moving house so it could be last round for a while.

Edit- results posted and I missed qualifying by 1 shot. Honestly so disappointed. Moving house in 2 weeks. This was my last ever major at a club I have really enjoyed being a member. Just wanted to play next week. Gutted.

don't currently have a handicap but would normally manage maybe 4/5 pars a round at most - 9 holes of my life yesterday, standing on the 9th tee 2 under, finishing 1 over.

Today, 9 points on the front 9 🖕

    21 points on the back 9 🤨

My bipolar rounds ended today. Had been shooting +20 front 9 and -2 back 9 or vice versa. Today went E front 9 and -1 for 48pts. Finished 3rd overall in the comp though 🤣
