    Trailer is here

Hopefully Sam Raimi was given some freedom to take off the MCU director handcuffs and do his thing.

Can't say I'm noticing any obvious influence that would tip a hat that Sam Raimi's directing TBH - which is a bit disappointing.

Defintiely seeing connections to Strange in the first Doctor Strange and in the What If...? series I think.

Are those ruins in space, the same place as where the Kang varient in Loki was hanging out? Kinda looks like it, and looks like the events of Loki and What If (Strange Supreme) will tie in directly to this (and WandaVision obviously).

Maybe also Jennifer Garner then for Elektra?

As I said in the general mcu thread, the film is in the can so this is highly unlikely to be true.

    This too shall pass.

    Colin Farrell's Bullseye.

I doubt anything will come of this unless it's already filmed in secert as the film itself should be in the can and ready for release in what 12 weeks.

seeing Dr. Strange facing himself at the end just reminded me of this earlier (and, despite not having seen DSITMOM, probably better) Raimi film:

Outside of Hugh Jackman / Wolverine and some of the other X-Men, you get the sense Marvel is automatically into diminishing returns with multiverse 'cameos' beyond the undoubtedly fondly remembered Spider-Man cast(s). There was very little else pre-Iron Man that really struck a chord, so you're already down to b-tier cameos. Unless they start bringing back old / retired MCU characters, which actually probably is going to happen at some stage, but even then the particular appeal of No Way Home can only really be done once... outside of X-Men anyway (and maybe Blade, but I'm not sure Disney is hiring Wesley Snipes any time soon!). I'm not even sure DC can repeat the NWH trick with their upcoming Batman multiverse shenanigans.

I think the potential use of B Tier cameos is quite clever, as they would serve as both fun Easter eggs and more importantly as expendable collateral damage if Wanda really is going on a rampage.

I mean no one would really give a crap if Wanda kills Ioan Gruffud's Mr Fantastic or Anson Mount's Black Bolt (I'm just plucking names from a hat, this isn't a spoiler) but it would still be quite the spectacle to see, and serves to give Wanda a much over due showcase of powers.

I want more Ralph Boener cameos please.

I think DC got quite the coup with the return or Michael Keaton's batman. In fact there's an argument that that's the biggest cameo/return of them all; with quality over quantity here; the actor who headlined the film that started the whole superhero ball rolling - and arguably, still the best actor to have played the part.

    Xavier?!!?

    Xavier!!

    It's gotta be Xavier!

    Can't NOT be Xavier!

    Xavier!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,561 ✭✭✭✭Varik

Think it's more than just Xavier.

The other with Xavier are probably the rest of the Illuminati, but in the MCU they've come together to deal with the multiverse. If it is that might mean Reed Richards and that fire person we see could be Johnny.

Honestly is not that surprising we knew that they are coming heh.

    The official poster teases

Captain Carter - there's a fragment of glass reflecting what looks like Cap's shield with the Union Jack on it.

"we should tell him the truth". Well there was a very familiar voice - though I'd say this will be a cameo at most, and a handover at best.

The biggest new entry was the presence of America Chavez in what looks like a supporting role, with some action scenes too. Don't know much of her but IIRC she's a fan favourite of recent years from the comics.

MCU is about to get a whole lot bigger.

do spoilers now exist for speculation?

how about speculation is put in the title

    (joking)

    but spoilers are bull

Some more details in the tv spot

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

I think Far From Home and a couple others muddied the waters in terms of big reveals and "hidden" character surprises. A lot of folks like their trailers as enigmatic and abstract as possible so discussing their detail ruins that a little. I suspect with the Multiverse doors fully blown open there's going to be a LOT of comebacks, cameos and "surprises" coming down the tracks; maybe "SPOILERS" can be added to the thread title?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,719 ✭✭✭Bacchus

I don't see the point in using spoilers for a trailer so watch out below.

That's an intense trailer (and TV spot). There's soooo much going on in there and it does appear that it'll tie in to WhatIf with fricking ZOMBIES and Socerer Supreme (tentacle attack looks like it's from WhatIf)! Agent Carter is also teased in the poster apparently. I don't think there's much point trying to read in to who the fireball character is. There's a strong possibility that those visuals are manipulated to some degree to throw everyone off the scent. Also 100% that is Xavier. There is no way they'd use him for another purpose, especially after the last, ill-received, X-Men fake out. I don't know anything about what that council is from the comics but my read of it is that this is another earth where Tony created Ultron successfully, there are X-Men, FF, and all the other Marvel characters. I'm not sure if they are going to be some sort of multiverse police as the multiverse only just started unraveling. Anyway, loads of goodies there to dissect. This is gonna be Endgame levels of huge for the MCU.

From the far flung future, first gay Latina character in Marvel, has standard superman powers flight/strength/invulnerability but also a real cool ability to literally "kick" star shaped holes in dimensional walls so is a portable multiverse story generator as she hops between them all the time.

Definitely up there with Ms. Marvel in terms of popularity for the more recent Marvel creations. Most well known for hanging around with the Young Avengers characters we're seeing everywhere in the MCU at the moment (Billy and Tommy, Kate Bishop, Cassie Lang, young Loki, Eli Bradley). So I think we're definitely seeing them soon. Has a thing for Kate which is AFAIK unrequited.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

Ta for that. I wonder how much will be 1:1 with this version; the MCU has tended to tweak, or indeed wholesale alter, characters from page to screen.

The ill-advised Boner joke from Wanda-Vision I'd assume.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,730 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Saw online that there's a few frames in the trailer, where Strange and America Chavez are falling through the Savage Lands, the few frames at the end of that shot show them entering another reality. An animated reality, most likely the X-Men '97 reality (as it's coming to Disney+). I'm sure it'll just be a quick fly-through, but still, they're going full balls to the wall with this one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,719 ✭✭✭Bacchus

Gonna spoiler tag this if you haven't seen WandaVision...

They teased Quicksilver from the First Class X-Men movies in an episode cliffhanger, and then put in a twist that he was just a random guy Wanda "cast" as her brother with nothing to do with the X-Men movies.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,286 ✭✭✭Brief_Lives

ahh ok, I saw wandavision... i just thought it was very cool what they did.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,719 ✭✭✭Bacchus

What? That they hired the actor who played the mutant Quicksilver in the X-Men series, to play Quicksilver in a show focusing on his sister in the MCU where she is warping reality and then... did absolutely nothing with it and played it off as a gotcha joke. Nah, that was a bad joke, and IIRC it didn't go down great. So (on topic), I gotta believe they won't do that again with Xavier in DSitMoM. My guess is that this is their way of soft launching the X-Men in the MCU. Mutants exist in other universes which will beg the question "are they in our (MCU) universe". They'll either start to appear due to some cosmic dodadery or there will be some sort of crossover between universes thanks to Strange and Wanda. It's a tricky thing to navigate TBH, because just dumping them in the MCU removes the history of mutant persecution and older mutants going back centuries. e.g. setting Magneto up as a victim of the Nazi camps was perfection, what will they do with a shiny new Magneto who just appears or gets his powers all of a sudden?

People are allowed have different reactions, I really enjoyed that bit of trolling and the ott reaction to it from some made it better. The FoX movies are mess in terms of continuity and I really don't want that anywhere near the MCU, Evan Peters was a nice nod towards those movies without actually doing anything. I don't think they'll do the same thing again but I hope Patrick Stewart will be play Charles without them specifying that it's that Charles. A Venom-esque tie I'm where they bring him into the MCU for a cameo and eject him promptly would be fine. I'd like Marvel to do their own thing with the mutants rather than try fix the FoX mess.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,730 ✭✭✭✭Penn

I really loved the Quicksilver thing in WandaVision. I didn't see it as trolling or a joke, I think it played in really well with the TV format of the show, played to Wanda's delusions and fragmented state of mind, and was mostly just a bit of fun/easter egg rather than a joke at the expense of the audience. Though naming him Ralph Bohner was probably a step too far. Like FunLover18 says, I also wouldn't want the Fox X-Men to be directly incorporated into the MCU. Using Evan Peters wouldn't even make sense due to the different age his Quicksilver would be in the MCU timeline as he was late teens in the mid-70's in Days of Future Past.

Having the X-Men/Charles show up in a Multiverse sense is the best course, while still leaving the door open to bring a new version of the X-Men directly into the MCU, without also bringing in the frankly ridiculous baggage the original Fox X-Men comes with. It's also a great chance to recast those characters, because as perfect as Jackman/Stewart/McKellen and most of the others were, they're aging out of those roles and it could be better to just establish new versions with a fresh start.

The reaction was OTT - you could write that on the tombstone of the internet - but honestly, I was a bit miffed myself without pitching into full-blown rage. I don't appreciate fiction writers trolling me; bad enough when the great unwashed decide to stir the pot (going double when speaking as a Boards moderator!), without a production doing the same. They had to have known Evan Peters' casting would cause a stir and to pull right back from the - let's be honest - fairly understandable and logical conclusion you could draw? Oof. Sometimes, sommmmmmetimes, the victim & target of anger kinda asked for it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,793 ✭✭✭FunLover18

I actually agree with you that trolling was the wrong word, that implies that Marvel did it deliberately in the hope of annoying people and I don't think that was the case. I do think it was more of nudge and a wink.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,793 ✭✭✭FunLover18

The biggest piece of "trolling" that show did was actually Paul Bettany teasing us about the actor he'd always wanted to work with and it turning out to be himself 😂

Of course you're allowed a different reaction, I never suggested otherwise. This is just chat. I didn't like it. You did. No drama :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,719 ✭✭✭Bacchus

I also agree I'd prefer that the mess that is the Fox X-Men universe never tie in directly to the MCU, except in some sort of multiverse way like Spiderman did. I'd like to see the X-Men inclusion to the MCU universe be a clean slate. No idea how they'll do that though in a way that will feel organic.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,730 ✭✭✭✭Penn

I did see one idea online that could be interesting; that the main MCU being the "sacred timeline" as engineered by Kang is the only universe without mutants, and that Scarlet Witch ends up creating mutants through a reverse 'House Of M' type of event.

It does make it difficult in some respects given what age some mutants are meant to be, as it would mean things like healing factors wouldn't have extended their lives (which would include Apocalypse as the 'first mutant'). But could be a decent compromise.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,719 ✭✭✭Bacchus

Reverse House of M feels like a likely route to go down, especially given her power ramp up in WandaVision. As you point out though, it doesn't address the history of the X-Men if they just appear. The backstories of Magneto and Prof X, Wolverine and the Weapon X program, Phoenix, Apocalypse would all need major retconning or re-imagining.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,611 ✭✭✭✭pjohnson

The Wandavision troll move was just a cheap way to get attention back to the show after its slow start. Its hardly and accident they cast Peters as Quicksilver, they knew what they were doing.

With how absolute ball to the wall Multiverse of Madness I've seen some wondering if they are going to try and pull a "Secret Wars" type smashing of the multiverses into one main 616. I think thats too extreme however.

I do however wonder if they are maybe considering taking some of the elements from Hickmans run on the X-Men and using that as a means of bringing them into the MCU. To use Krakoa as a sort of Wakanda to explain why mutants were hidden/not involved in previous events, that still wouldn't properly address the lack of recent human interactions the aforementioned Magneto/Charles/Logan would need for their backstories. Unless Feige just decided to run with those existing backstories as they are but then have Charles recruit Erik/Logan to Krakoa immediately after their set origins to bide their time. It's flimsy but kinda possible.

Others online have pointed out that Hickmans run and the current X-Men renaissance only began AFTER Marvel got back the rights to the X-Men so some are thinking there may be a connection.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 25,872 Mod ✭✭✭✭Doctor DooM

He's talking about Ralf Boenher from Wandavision.

I disagree that was a fake out: We know Wanda changed the identities of everyone in Westview but they went to great lengths for Agatha to state that she took over whoever Ralf originally was' mind, but didn't give him his powers or physically change him in any way. So he's an anomoly, we don't know who Ralf was, but considering we're about to see a film where Wanda returns to Westview in someway and features at least one more of the cast of the X-Men movies, and has the word "multiverse" in the title, I think we could get a clear answer here.

EDIT: Just to be clear, in general Marvel are very, very clearly seeding the X-Men. In Falcon and the Winter Soldier we have a shot of the Princess Bar in Madripoor. In the comics, the Princess bar has an extremely famous regular, named Patch, also known as Wolverine.
