Will Berti Newman be considered for u20s selection next year even though he's at Bristol?

I know Mullins and Kelly were picked but they were IQ so it might have been different to LBN who left the system.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,023 ✭✭✭theVersatile

One would presume he would be similar to Karl Martin, and thus excluded, but you never know. I'm sure there will be talks with the player to gauge his interest in potentially returning to a province if he plays 20s.

Most are also studying in University though so moving every year would be disruptive on their education and relationships.

id be surprised, they dont want players leaving and allowing him to play 20s after leaving.......

This could be an opportunity to bring in some u19's to ready them for next year's 6nations? It would be a steep learning curve. The end result could really help next years crop.

Under 19s will get chosen if good enough not to ready them for next year alone. The 19s played France twice over easter so coaches are well aware of next years players as well as those who already played 20s.

Tector likely to miss those games due to injury.

Opportunity for Tony Butler to get a run of starts hopefully

Aren't these lads overage nect year? Or is this for the summer?

  • Registered Users Posts: 882 ✭✭✭Lsdrugbyfan

its the current squad most of who will be playing this summer

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,791 ✭✭✭Lost Ormond

its what places the players will be in. Most are going to be in/still in academies of provinces next season. Some arent on a contact yet but may get one when provinces announce next seasons new academy places.

Richie Murphy’s Ireland Under-20 squad that won a Grand Slam in the recent Six Nations Championship are set to play a further four games in Italy next month in a tournament that will take the place of the Junior World Championship – it will return next year having last been played in 2019 due to the coronavirus pandemic – as a competitive outlet.

South Africa and Georgia will join Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales, France and Italy with each of the countries playing three pool games and a crossover match. The details of the tournament are expected to be announced during the week, but it appears that Ireland will face France, England, and South Africa in their three matches.

While Ireland will take most of the squad that won all five games in the Six Nations, they will also include several Under-19 internationals with a view to giving a handful of highly rated younger players some experience at this level ahead of next season. The Ireland Under-19 team under Kieran Hallett drew 1-1 in a two-match series against France played in Belfast and Dublin last month.

Murphy’s side will definitely be without wing Chay Mullins, who will be with James Topping’s Men’s Sevens squad during the summer.

    That's excellent news..

Really glad they are getting a chance to play a bit more - The age grade teams have missed out on some much over the last few years.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,301 ✭✭✭Dubinusa

Who from the u19's will be selected? Great learning opportunity.

  • Registered Users Posts: 882 ✭✭✭Lsdrugbyfan

    Sam Prendergast almost certainly.

    Charlie Irvine probably too.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,394 ✭✭✭Paul Smeenus

Scott Wilson is injured. Cane out on crutches at half time during the Sharks' match.

  • Registered Users Posts: 164 ✭✭ljsulster

    Mcnabney

    prendergast

    irvine

    wright

    telfer

    mangan (if fit)

    gunne

    oji

just a few of the more likely to be selected, though probably not all will get- I personally don’t think Gunne and Oji will make it

  • Registered Users Posts: 882 ✭✭✭Lsdrugbyfan

they are both still in school, i'd be shocked if they did. Both will be doing their exams until mid june.

Seems a bit harsh to drop fringe u20s in favour of u19s. The 2002 group have missed out on u18s, u19s, underage interpros, and the JRWC. The 2003 group had a full u19 season, and will also have a full u20 calendar including the world cup.

  • Registered Users Posts: 882 ✭✭✭Lsdrugbyfan

There are several injuries that could be a huge factor.

Charlie Tector being one, Rory McGuire another, James Culhane and Ben Brownlee too.

  • Registered Users Posts: 164 ✭✭ljsulster

All likely to be replaced with

    Sam Prendergast

    Jack Boal

    Diuarmid Mangan

    Rory Telfer

  • Registered Users Posts: 882 ✭✭✭Lsdrugbyfan

Telfer and Boal are still in school afaik, so I imagine they are unlikely.

  • Registered Users Posts: 164 ✭✭ljsulster

    Boal plays AIL with harlequins

Telfer leaves school this year as does Gunne so hopefully they get an opportunity

  • Registered Users Posts: 882 ✭✭✭Lsdrugbyfan

players still in school don't get selected for the 20s.

    I cant see that changing.

  • Moderators, Politics Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 15,168 Mod ✭✭✭✭Quin_Dub

It won't, but both the mentioned players will no longer be in school when the tour starts.

They'll be finishing up school this week most likely.

Now as both will be doing the Leaving cert during June their ability to participate in training camps prior to departure would be quite limited so that might impact their selection chances.

Jordan Coughlan actually sat his leaving cert maths exam at the U20 World Cup in South Africa years ago.

  • Registered Users Posts: 882 ✭✭✭Lsdrugbyfan

it just hasnt happened where players who are u19 and were in school that season get selected for the irish 20's even in the summer, maybe they'll change that policy but i'd be surprised.

JC was repeating his leaving which is different.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,023 ✭✭✭theVersatile

Yeah I believe Tynan did the same - did a repeat exam out there, but that's far different from the seven (or potentially eight) subjects the majority of lads are doing.

Chay Mullins appears to be committed to playing 7's for the rest of the season.
