    Any notable players missing?

Thought the Methody 15 would've made the u18 team.

  • Registered Users Posts: 882 ✭✭✭Lsdrugbyfan

    Jim Peters(Lock), Fintan Gunne(Scrumhalf), David Dooley(Centre), Matthew Devine(Centre) & Diarmuid Mangan(Lock-Backrow) are all injured.

In the u18 squad Rueben Moloney(Fullback) and Sam Berman(Centre) could make irish 20's next season as they are leaving school this year.

What about the big Belvedere lock, Rees. He looked very good.

    didnt make it obviously.

i'd say he will be involved with leinster over the summer and they'll see how he progresses.

    Presumably you mean John Devine.

Jack Oliver (Munster scrumhalf) also injured

No sign of some of the other U19 eligible players that played 20s earlier in the year?

After watching the Leinster senior cup matches, I though McCarty at Blackrock looked better as a prospect than any other player. Gunne looked very good also.

There is a gulf this season between Blackrock and the rest. Hopefully this is narrowed next year. I've never paid attention to schools rugby and I was delighted to see some good rugby played. Being a Northside Jackeen, I have to throw my support with Belvo. They were decent this year, big 2nd row and a generally good pack.

    Hon the Belvo

The u18 match against France was a difficult watch. We were lucky not to give up a cricket score. The lads tried but were not close to France. Our backine was really poor. Especially the wings. France look loaded at this age grade. It was men v boys.

Ireland were 7 points up last time I looked just before half time. What happened?

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,423 ✭✭✭Dubinusa

The pack was under the kosh. The scrum was minced, especially the lh. They couldn't win collisions. The locks were poor, imo. Tall and lean with little power.

The 9 was good as was the 10. The 3 looked a unit and he and the 8 were the pick of the pack, imo.

The 14 was really poor. Couldn't field the ball or make a tackle. Just an opinion, mind you, not negatively attacking the lads. They looked poorly coached and way out of their depth. France were very sloppy. They should have put up a big score. They found holes in the 2nd half.

All told, the team was small and looked small. France had a significant size advantage.

Should be noted that we've had less preparation compared to other teams who've played warm up games. None of the leinster schools finalists started either.

I thought that the u18's started very well and were completely dominant for the first 15-20 minutes (and took a 13 point lead), but France got well on top as the game went on. It's to be expected that they would have a physical edge at this age-grade. Evan O'Connell (2nd row; nephew of Paul) impressed me in the first half. I was also very impressed with the number 8, Brian Gleeson - he looks a proper unit for his age. The number 10, Jack Murphy (son of Richie) looked classy in parts. As mentioned in the post above, there were 4-5 would-be first-choice players missing, particularly in the backs, so hopefully they fare better with them back in on Wednesday.

The under 19's are playing France in Queens at the minute. I can't seem to find anywhere that is providing updates. They are facing off again on Saturday at St Mary's College at 2pm. Does anyone know if that would be open to the general public to attend, or what would usually be the process for attending those kind of games?

The one at queens is open to the public.

16-12 to france at half time

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,323 ✭✭✭Locke_Lamora

    26-21 to us

France got held up 5 times, and two of those looked like certain trys with a tmo.

Does anyone have the teamsheet, anyone stand out watching it?

  • Registered Users Posts: 812 ✭✭✭Hey boy

No standouts other than 6 McNabney and 5.

13 had some good reads in defence.

    mostly forward mail tries.

french 7 was robbed I thought. Dived over but by the time ref arrived hands were under the ball.

decent team performance by a smaller team.

No. 8 managed 2 yellow cards.

Thought the 3 was good as well. He didn't look particularly heavy but he hit hard and is very quick off the line. Scrum took a turn for the worse when he went off.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,323 ✭✭✭Locke_Lamora

I didn't know half the players tbh but I think it was something like:

    1. Jack Boal
    2. Conall Henchy
    3. Paddy McCarthy
    4. ?
    5. Charlie Irvine
    6. James McNabney
    7. ? Liam Molony came off the bench so this might've been Ruadhan Quinn, going by the squad announcement.
    8. George Shaw (maybe)
    9. Andrew O'Mahony
    10. Sam Prendergast
    11. ?
    12. ?
    13. Hugh Cooney
    14. Ihechi Oji
    15. ?
