I'm not a Billy Joe fan by any means, but I don't get how people could say he just gave up. He has a fractured orbital bone. Supposed to be excruciating and if your sight in your eye is gone your corner are never going to leave you back out.

    It’s boxing. Not tickling

    He gave up.

First sign hardship and trouble and he quit..

Not the first and won’t be the last..

Some serious hatred amongst posters for BJ's.
"He quit etc". What do you want him to do risk permanent blindness ffs

BJS didn't do too bad. Definitely won a few rounds.

Big hit and in fairness injury. Guess it's into the next belt for canelo.

No rematch for BJS and don't see him fighting his way to a challenger spot.

Not a bad fight all said.

Hearn says trainer stopped it, but presumably that's after asking Billy Joe whether he wanted to go back out.

If it's a fractured orbital as suggested, nobody sitting at home watching on TV can criticise a fighter for not wanting to risk losing an eye.

I saw no protestations from Billy.

He seemed more than ok to not go back out..

Here he is calling out Dubois for quitting over the same injury. Deserves all the abuse that comes his way. Got to back up your statements.

Yep. He knows what it's like now.

If he’s a broken bone or eye damage then it’s acceptable to retire.

If it’s just badly bruised or swollen then it’s a quit.

Wonder if canelo was right when he said he broke the cheek.

Assume these lads have an idea.

    Nonsense..

Folks say the same for any fighters..

It’s boxing. People get beaten up..

Fighters quit. He was one tonight. Nothing to do with hate..

But you only know broken when x rayed and verified!

Yes because he can't see out of one eye and is probably in excruciating pain......a pain that he hasn't felt before. He talked to his corner obviously, they knew more than likely. End game. That's boxing though.

Would you go away with your xray and verify.

Clown talk has no place in fight threads.

I think you’d have an idea how bad the damage was though.

It looked like he quit to me but maybe his vision is ****ed right now. There’s no way I can tell that from my sofa.

Twats. Twats say the same. I said the exact same for the Dubois-Joyce fight. If BJS had a go at Dubois, then he did so out of ignorance having never been in that position. Now he knows. Dubois owed an apology but BJS is a prick so that's not happening.

Anyone sitting at home drinking their Dutch Gold all night criticising someone for retiring on the stool with a broken face needs a slap.

Walking into the dressing room the blackness would indicate break.

So all visual sayd he has broken bone.

Better tell Eddie he needs an xray machine on hand between rounds to keep the experts happy

I guess some people are really amateur fans

Awful lot and of sensitivity and defensiveness here

He quit. Big deal. He’s human..

    Happens in boxing and sport...

Why folks so defensive because he quit?

Eye sore/injured...he decided no more. That’s called quitting/retiring..

  • Registered Users Posts: 217 ✭✭volono

I remember the brook v GGG fight and he ploughed on for another couple of rounds before his corner threw in the towel so I can see why some might say he quit but in BJS defence, I mean the guy can't see out of one eye and the indications are is that it's a break , what do people want?.
It's a pity it ended like it did but theyre boxing not playing tiddlywinks!!!

Had canelo 3 or 4 up at the time of stoppage. Saunders had zero power in his punches to keep canelo at bay.

No issue with Saunders retiring on his stool if the broken orbital bone is true. He was getting badly, badly hurt if he came back out.

Chris Mannix is also a terrible judge of fights.

You know as well as anyone in boxing that "he quit" is synonymous with "he was too scared to go back out". It's used disparagingly by dickheads sitting at home on sofas to have a pop at fighters they deem unworthy of their famed and much desired respect.

  • Registered Users Posts: 348 ✭✭Raving_Magic

There was no way BJS could continue with that type of injury. He's risking blindness with the power Canelo has to have an injury like that and to continue is by no means quitting and If he did quit, who really could blame him. Think he done himself well done against one of the greats.

    Yes..

    And it happens..

Fighters quit for varieties of reasons...

    They’re human..

    Heaps examples through the years

Grow a thicker skin. They’re grown men.

    Nobody should be getting offended.

I thought the knackers don't bleed, feel pain or ever quit.....

Cheerio Billy Joe, you absolute cretin you.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,853 ✭✭✭Morrison J

The quitting debate is always a tedious one. I think you should applaud those fighters who refuse to do so but also accept when some fighters do quit as long as it's not egregious, or as long as that fighter hasn't mocked another fighter for quitting. Saunders has talked too much **** in the past for me to feel any way bothered about the amount of abuse that's bound to come his way. Deserves what he gets. Dubois in comparison, didn't deserve all the abuse and I felt sorry for him but there's a difference.

His coaches pulled him gt, that's what the coach said

    That last round was fantastic

It reminded me of a matador or a fighter in a collusiem engaging the crowd who were baying for blood

    What a superstar

    Of course they did.

Nice and handy. He’s not the quitter. His coach is.

Same as Virgil Hunter with Khan..

Good win for canelo , would have been interesting to see if Saunders could have asked a few more questions in the last 3 rounds but it wasn't to be.

Not sure where BJS goes from here but he will have made a packet so maybe he won't care !

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,837 ✭✭✭Sweet.Science

    Can't see BJS fighting again

On his display itself thought it was what I expected . But this isn't the amateur game . Scoring jabs was never going to be enough

Not to beat canelo on cinco de mayo anyway !

He looks foolish now after what he said about Dubois.
