I guess you don't need to ask what side drew supports, never should have been put in the position.

If the government is running a vast propaganda network roping in the Gardai, all forms of media, except an Phoblact, and "paid Trolls online" then one would wonder what kind of network a SF controlled government would bring ?

It's nonsense to suggest everybody is against SF although playing the victim is certainly working out for them.

It's worrying that the woman who wants to lead the country has basically called the Garda Commissioner a liar. Although one of her new TDS Married a fella who killed a Garda so it just again affirms the fact that this is not a normal political party

we have a garda commissioner who used to be in the RUC - which is the same thing as being in the uda or the ira if you ask me - so things are weird enough as they stand

He's not the first Garda commissioner to be untruthful under FFG, there's a long history there

The problem for FF/FG is that few are listening to them. And when they do all they are hearing is 'RA RA RA.

Look at this for instance, if FF?FG aren't getting the message then they deserve their decline.

He agreed with a 2015 report he wrote as Deputy Chief Constable of the Psni, shocked I am. Should not be getting involved with the democracy of this country.Regardless of who you support, surely you can see this as political interference as this never happened before against any other party. But it occurs under the MI5 agents watch. Lost all respect for the man as he should be independent of politics.

    just another group he defends.

When the Glennane Gang carried out a machine-gun and bomb attack on the Rock bar, near Keady, they were all serving RUC men.

Some wore their RUC uniform under their overalls.

One of the RUC attackers then took witness statements in the RUC police station.

The RUC members got suspended sentences.

He was asked a question and he answered it. He didn’t just release a statement at random to express his concerns or whatever. The media asked him that question, what was the Gardai’s stance, and he simply answered it.

He also followed up with that he’ll work with any Justice Minister no matter who it is or what party they’re from.

Do we want a Garda Commissioner who is direct or one that is political and diplomatic?

Honestly some people just bitch and moan without looking at all of the facts. Instead they refuse to engage and just conjure up this absolute bull**** that the state and the media are against them.

Welcome to accountability, lads, let’s see how you handle it in the weeks to come. If you want to sit at the grown-ups table, then here’s what’s on the menu.

You don’t like it? There’s still plenty of room at the kids table if you feel you’re not quite ready yet.

While the Commissioner is dead right, the post is supposed to be non political, he shouldn't be commenting.

First they came for the socialists...

Seriously, that’s a question I believe is in the public’s interest. Should the Gardai be ignoring it and pretending it’s only an issue for themmuns up North?

There is nothing political about his answer. It’s direct and it’s to the point.

The GC's statement raises questions for the Irish, British governments.

Once again, it seems to me that the GFA is being compromised for political gain. And that question now seems to be being asked on twitter.

Not true SF got over 25% of seats in the dáil and even looking at the popular vote SF got 535K. But labour, FF and FG had a combined popular vote of 1.1m. All of those parties said they would not go into coalition with SF prior to the election.

This anti-SF mandate must be respected no matter how much SF try to spin that they 'won' the election.

So the governments of Ireland and UK worked for years to get the terrorist organisations on both side to embrace peace and go forward with politics rather than guns.
Now that Sinn Fein are the most popular party in the republic FF/FG and the Irish media (which historically is FG or FF supporting) are trying their best to discredit them, bringing up IRA links etc, and refusing to work with them and implying they are not a legitimate party and so on. Everybody knows that Sinn Fein have IRA links but they agreed decades ago to sign up to the peace deal. They can't keep getting beaten with that stick just because they have become more popular now. The FF and FG past governments have encouraged and expected SF to work with the DUP in the North (two parties who are the complete opposite in every way) but they are now unwilling to work with them or even accept that they are a legitimate political entity! Such hypocrisy!

How is it being compromised for political gain?

If it was being compromised for political gain why is he happy to work with a Sinn Fein Justice Minister?

People looking for conspiracy theories here are seriously swinging and missing. For Mary Lou McDonald and others to come out and call others liars when she herself was caught lying two weeks ago about Conor Murphy’s comments regarding the murder of Paul Quinn is rich.

Seriously, SF needs to get their house in order and make it clear who they are and what they stand for. David Cullinane’s ‘up the ra’ nonsense is what started this and it’s being brushed aside as a whatever.

    https://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/politics/iras-surgeon-sean-hughes-asked-to-mend-sinn-fein-split-34953258.html
A former IRA commander from Northern Ireland has been asked to intervene in a bitter dispute among Sinn Fein councillors.

Sean Hughes, who was nicknamed 'The Surgeon' by security forces, is part of a panel of senior party figures asked to resolve the row in Wicklow.
In 2016, a former IRA Commander popped down to Wicklow to ensure Sinn Fein TD's didn't defect.

Everything to do with Northern Irelands police, armed forces, etc, is political.

Has anyone actually read the report from 2015? Here's a link: https://cain.ulster.ac.uk/issues/police/docs/psni_2015-10-19_paramilitary-groups.pdf

Note the relevant sentence in paragraph 13: PIRA members believe that the PAC oversees both PIRA and Sinn Fein with an overarching strategy.

So the upshot is that the PSNI thought that some PIRA members believe that the Army Council oversees SF etc. It does not say that this is what the PSNI thought.

14 hours and 36 posts. I hope that SF are grateful. Get some sleep. You're going to be busy over the next few weeks. You should alternate with Bowie and save your energy. How do you keep a job ?

I'm sure Mary Lou will come out and say she's firmly in control of SF when the truth is she has next to no power in SF
    Is this actually true?

What power in SF can we establish Mary Lou has?

How is power structured in SF ?? How is this demonstrated? No one seems to know.

I don't believe the provo IRA council are still active they are so ****ing old!

Unless they have new members etc.

It’s the Gardai’s responsibility to protect the state and the people in it!!

I actually can’t believe people don’t think this is in the public’s interest. If it was a question about the Blueshirts you can guarantee the same people that think Drew Harris should keep shtum about the Army Council would be up in arms if he kept quiet about the Blueshirts.

The whole rush to attack Drew Harris and suggest this isn’t a matter for the Gardai to have a stance on is exactly why we’re nowhere near ready for a United Ireland. It stinks of ‘nothing to see here’ and victimisation.

Sooner or later the 'I can't answer the point made' personal attack comes.
I am sitting here having a lovely glass of wine, after watching Roy Keane being Roy Keane.
Did a full days work too, and left two kids to the cinema, 14 miles away and did the weekly shopping, if you want to check the U20's rugby thread, you'll see me complaining about that.

But yeh, I'm full time working for the Shinners. :D:D

Are the provisional ira active? No they are not, the guns were put away and decommissioned.

Are there former IRA members, in particular former leaders in Sinn Fein? Categorically yes.

Are they still runnung Sinn Fein? No, they are hitting pension age. The majority within Sinn Fein were not in the IRA, they're a younger generation and have taken on the baton so to speak.

Are the new voters for Sinn Fein supporters of the provisional ira? The vast majority are not. They voted on the main issues of the day and accept that shadowy former provos don't run Sinn Fein.

Do former provos continue to have an influence on Sinn Fein? Categorically yes, they gave up the guns to pursue political means to achieve a United Ireland. Many have stepped down or passed away.

The focus moved down south a good few years back, an area outside the expertise of most former provos.

The ffg and media campaign is a continuation of past censorship, in a last ditch attempt to stem the tide going out on FFG monopoly.

The Commisioner has knowingly stuck his head in the middle of current party politics. His position is untenable.

I'm not sure how SF will break the link, if ever with the IRA. Mary Lou can deny all she wants but the public perception is unlikely to change. Those of a non SF persuasion will see the IRA links as problematic to them being in government. Those who voted for SF, will not give a hoot.

Did you see the way Michelle was by her side all the time at the count, keeping an eye on her in case she strayed. It was very strange the way she kept staring at her.
