    Yep.

There are lot of nicknames for different colour schemes, and Batman is black and blue.

Oh certainly Fitz, but mostly people want shít that others want. That's usually expensive shít, but not always. It depends on the societal group's checklist. And all of it is down to perception. Take the current Rolex "shortage" - and something you've noted nail on the head yourself - on chrono24 if you want a Sub there are ninety plus pages of the things. And that's just one outlet. They're not rare, nor hard to get, but the market and perception has decided they are and you quite simply have to pay extra to get one. Which in turn naturally plugs into the "luxury" perception. The actual qualities of the watch are a bit down the line. Then again actually rare is a crap selling point. If only fifty people can ever get one, that won't drive a market, beyond the extremely rarified atmosphere of hedge/trust fund boyos having a willie measuring contest at Bonhams. 😁

Many worry about Artificial Intelligence. I worry far more about Organic Idiocy.

Hey Calamari, bought the Steinhart 39 GMT about 2 years ago...cant say I ever really jelled with it even though it's a well made watch. Just a little too cluttered. Bought a regular 39 black ceramic and got a jubilee bracelet for it and its not been off my wrist the last 3 months. Just a classy looking setup for decent money.

Any more talk like that and I'm cutting you out of my will. 🤓

    Am I missing something here?

Is that not more expensive than a new one and looks in pretty worn condition? These go about 350 in good used condition. That's what I paid for mine and it was pretty much unworn

    "no silly offers"

Just a silly asking price 😃

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,309 ✭✭✭CalamariFritti

Had a quick look and they are €510 new. https://www.steinhartwatches.de/de/taucheruhren/taucheruhren-42mm/ocean-vintage-gmt-neu.html

They are entitled to ask for whatever they like I guess and I suppose it would be bad form to post that link there?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,220 ✭✭✭micks_address

Well I was just curious if I was missing something about it and it's somehow worth asking. I think the newer ones use a selita movement due to shortages of eta supply.. last time I checked the website they were out of stock. There are special editions like the gnom 39 that would be worth more

You mean post the link on the add? I'm sure it would provoke ire

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,309 ✭✭✭CalamariFritti

You're not missing anything. Maybe the guy paid more than 510 who knows but the thing looks beat and 550 and 'no silly offers' is just mental.

I was briefly tempted to rain on his parade but on second thoughts I thought maybe thats a little ratty too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,600 ✭✭✭Cyclingtourist

Adverts is for people to offer their watches etc. at a certain price, it's not a forum like here where if someone's asking over-the-odds you might politely inform them.

The guy can ask for whatever he wants.

hi folks - im going to service my recently acquired speedmaster sometime in 22. The last one i had done by watchfix was in and around 500 euro. Someone recommended https://kishjewellers.ie/ to be recently and they service in around 300 euro. Has anyone had work done there? The watch is fine and running to 4 seconds a day accuracy so no panic to service.. its a fractionally stiffer than my last one to wind so it might benefit from a service.. the other option in john brerton but i havent check a price with them.

Another tip for these is to put the item to be cleaned in a zip lock bag, half fill the bag with hot water and a drop of fairy liquid. then seal the bag. Fill the tank then with hot water. Using the bag saves having to clean the gunk out of the tank. Thanks for the heads up CT.

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

I think if you look at adverts.ie you'll see the Omega seamaster mid-size (truthfully worn by my wife more so than myself at 36mm but it means she babied it after we got it NOS. Babying a seamaster in this case meaning she refused to get it wet... it's a dive watch (that has been serviced so absolutely can dive again and actually relumed by the servicer too).

Do let me know if you're at all interested (no silly asking prices from myself ;) )

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,309 ✭✭✭CalamariFritti

Thank you Thirdfox, quick thinking, but unfortunately I wouldnt be into the two tone stuff at all. Especially gold tones are an absolute NoNo for me personally.

Its the 2252.50.00 in classic steel/black I would consider.

Will stay put for now cos I bought the Steinhart ocean 39 gmt. And while its like not buying the Mercedes but buying the Honda that looks a bit like it, the inner monkey will be happy (for now).

The steinhart ocean one is a brilliant watch .I had one with the ceramic bezel and the quality is every bit as good as an omega and more comfortable on the wrist than the I find the seamaster

The only negative and the reason I moved it on is the whole “homage “ watch issue .If that doesn’t bother you I don’t think you get a better watch for under €500

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,309 ✭✭✭CalamariFritti

Thanks, great to hear its a good quality watch since I bought one since.

The homage thing is not an issue with me. What homage is it would you say? Rolex Submariner or Explorer 2 or so I guess? Is there something like that in 39mm?

Anyway. Anyone I know, they might have heard of Rolex or Omega, but they wouldnt know one from the other never mind an 'homage'. So the only critic, the only one who knows, would be me and i can be quite forgiving on myself especially if the difference is 10k. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,600 ✭✭✭Cyclingtourist

Homages are just watches whose design is derived from some more expensive watch. I don't believe my Steinhart is as good as a Rolex Submariner but I'm not willing to pay the considerable difference in price so am quite content to wear a quality 'homage'.

Lots of people wearing 'submariners' are actually wearing fakes.

Im sure you’ll enjoy it.I haven’t had a higher quality watch for similar money. The bracelet is so far ahead of Seiko or Tag.

i had the 42 mm ocean one and it’s near identical in appearance to a sub .pics below .

I paid €9k for the sub and I think €400ish for the ocean 1 so the sub was roughly 20 times the price of the steinhart but it’s not 20 times the timepiece.

So the only critic, the only one who knows, would be me

I'm exactly the same , I buy watches I like for my own reasons and only care if I like them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,864 ✭✭✭scwazrh

Nothing wrong with a homage once your happy with it and enjoy it.

The fake watch wearers are usually easy enough to spot just by them being themselves.

I never met a watch enthusiast who flashes his watch around and they’re usually as proud of their €100 oddball watch as they are their more expensive watch.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,309 ✭✭✭CalamariFritti

It is near identical. wow. And the gmt I bought is near identical to the explorer 2.

Is Rolex ok with that? I imagine if Toyota released a car that looks near identical to a Mercedes the latter wouldnt be impressed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,878 ✭✭✭✭Cyrus

They have closer copies of the sub than that I think or they did . Not much Rolex can do about it, there are tonnes of submariner homages .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,309 ✭✭✭CalamariFritti

Have to agree with this. If you spot an expensive watch on someone you can usually tell from the overall picture whether the watch is genuine or not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,878 ✭✭✭✭Cyrus

    Hulk homage

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,309 ✭✭✭CalamariFritti

Inspecting these now especially the ocean one gmt vs explorer 2.

Near identical but for one obvious and big difference. Black vs silver bezel. Think the black on the Steinhart is actually nicer. The Steinhart wouldnt have caught my eye at all with a silver bezel.

Besides that, even though I thought homage or not doesnt bother me I'm actually kinda glad there is an obvious difference.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,878 ✭✭✭✭Cyrus

Is it not a copy of the Rolex GMT rather than the explorer 2?

Ye looks like it. Ah well, like I said, I'll be the only one who knows.
