The only gold watches I like are vintage watches. Women are dead right, mechanical is a load of shite, not even noticeable with some watches that don't have a display back. Need to do a car comparison with mechanical and quartz. In 30 years when a battery can can do 2000 miles on a charge and needs servicing once every 100k km, outperforms the ICE car in every way, no doubt there'll be some internet group driving 40 year old 2l diesel BMW's saying the electric cars have no "soul" 😂

There's an element of that to it alright, but the car comparison breaks down(no pun) to some degree. Watches are now male jewellry rather than the necessity they once were. If we take the car comparision they're more like the weekend sports car the (mostly)middle aged guy drives to meet other golfists at the weekend, rather than the car he drives to work or brings the kids to school. There's little utility involved. They're one of the signifiers of wealth and taste within the society and social group they inhabit and in that framework the utilitarian superiority of quartz is a major negative. On more US based forums you see this more openly and you'll even see some guys boasting about how much a service costs on their [insert expensive brand here].

As for "soul" I can see it more with a handwider than an auto. There's a personal connection to the old style contained within. For me there's more of that element in vintage stuff too as they're more delicate and from a different time, often reflecting same. A Tesla Plaid can go from 0-1000 in half a second or whatever with little effort save for keeping your retinas where nature intended, but driving something like a 60's Ferrari with a Columbo V12 revving to seven grand is a far more visceral and involved and involving experience, even though a hot hatch would worry it in the performance end of things(Though they've become very expensive jewellry too, polished and pickled, rarely actually driven). I once had a go of a very well sorted 1960's Lotus Elan. Oh. My. God. The level of feel and connection in that thing was off the scale insane. Though I agree with your regarding the diesel Beemer. I would say a fair few "soulful" mechanical watches, particularly in the vintage realm can fall into that bracket.

Don't know about soul but I do enjoy listening to the ticking noise of the movement in the speedmaster. It's not in my Spotify unwrapped playlist though.

    Wibbs quote:

"They're one of the signifiers of wealth and taste within the society and social group they inhabit and in that framework the utilitarian superiority of quartz is a major negative."

I think it's called 'conspicuous consumption'.

It's a term coined by our old friend Thorstein Veblen of 'Veblen goods' e.g. certain Rolex watches, fame.

I'm thinking of upgrading my 'diver' which is currently a basic Seiko skx013 which is nice but feels a bit dated looks wise.

As it got a mention here I always liked the Seamster midsize automatic myself.

But all brand, price and other considerations left out, just on the face/looks of it, I really like the Steinhart Ocean 39 GMT in black, too. Looks really like a considerable upgrade to my skx013. And not even near Omega money. Any experience with them?

I have a Steinhart Ocean 39 (see post pics of your watches thread) and an Omega Seamaster mid-sized quartz which is almost identical to the automatic. If you have the money go for the Seamaster but be aware you may have to have it serviced. This was the main reason I went for the quartz version.

Yes and no. More we're a social animal and part of that is display of group affiliations and status. Clothes, cars, language, phones, all sorts. We all do it pretty much. Just the signifiers change.

All valid points wibbs....but the Pontiff Archieluxury once put if very succinctly.

"People want nice sh1t....and nice sh1t is never cheap sh1t."

There is a certain truth to this, you can dance around the edges fleshing out the details, but this is the core of it. I think that with watches being so niche, there is a lot more internal validation going on than external. Its human nature, and to know/show you now live at the peek of Maslow's hierarchy is in itself a basic desire.

I buy lots of my clothes in Oxfam & other charity shops, I drive an 04 Ford Fiesta, I only speak English, my phone is a Nokia... what does that 'signify'?

Every has their priorities. Your bicycle costs more than your car.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 4,405 ✭✭✭Cyclingtourist

Not even close. No nct on my bikes (3) and then there's tax/insurance, petrol, licence (3 years) to keep the car on the road. If I didn't have a car think of the watches I could buy.☺☺

I have the Batman version that I had posted in the For Sale section a few months ago. If you were interested in it feel free to drop a DM.

    Batman means black/blue?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 725 ✭✭✭Pablo_Flox

    Yep.

There are lot of nicknames for different colour schemes, and Batman is black and blue.

Oh certainly Fitz, but mostly people want shít that others want. That's usually expensive shít, but not always. It depends on the societal group's checklist. And all of it is down to perception. Take the current Rolex "shortage" - and something you've noted nail on the head yourself - on chrono24 if you want a Sub there are ninety plus pages of the things. And that's just one outlet. They're not rare, nor hard to get, but the market and perception has decided they are and you quite simply have to pay extra to get one. Which in turn naturally plugs into the "luxury" perception. The actual qualities of the watch are a bit down the line. Then again actually rare is a crap selling point. If only fifty people can ever get one, that won't drive a market, beyond the extremely rarified atmosphere of hedge/trust fund boyos having a willie measuring contest at Bonhams. 😁

Hey Calamari, bought the Steinhart 39 GMT about 2 years ago...cant say I ever really jelled with it even though it's a well made watch. Just a little too cluttered. Bought a regular 39 black ceramic and got a jubilee bracelet for it and its not been off my wrist the last 3 months. Just a classy looking setup for decent money.

    Am I missing something here?

Is that not more expensive than a new one and looks in pretty worn condition? These go about 350 in good used condition. That's what I paid for mine and it was pretty much unworn

    "no silly offers"

Just a silly asking price 😃

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 6,571 ✭✭✭CalamariFritti

Had a quick look and they are €510 new. https://www.steinhartwatches.de/de/taucheruhren/taucheruhren-42mm/ocean-vintage-gmt-neu.html

They are entitled to ask for whatever they like I guess and I suppose it would be bad form to post that link there?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,041 ✭✭✭✭micks_address

Well I was just curious if I was missing something about it and it's somehow worth asking. I think the newer ones use a selita movement due to shortages of eta supply.. last time I checked the website they were out of stock. There are special editions like the gnom 39 that would be worth more

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,041 ✭✭✭✭micks_address

You mean post the link on the add? I'm sure it would provoke ire

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 6,571 ✭✭✭CalamariFritti

You're not missing anything. Maybe the guy paid more than 510 who knows but the thing looks beat and 550 and 'no silly offers' is just mental.

I was briefly tempted to rain on his parade but on second thoughts I thought maybe thats a little ratty too.

Adverts is for people to offer their watches etc. at a certain price, it's not a forum like here where if someone's asking over-the-odds you might politely inform them.

The guy can ask for whatever he wants.

hi folks - im going to service my recently acquired speedmaster sometime in 22. The last one i had done by watchfix was in and around 500 euro. Someone recommended https://kishjewellers.ie/ to be recently and they service in around 300 euro. Has anyone had work done there? The watch is fine and running to 4 seconds a day accuracy so no panic to service.. its a fractionally stiffer than my last one to wind so it might benefit from a service.. the other option in john brerton but i havent check a price with them.

Another tip for these is to put the item to be cleaned in a zip lock bag, half fill the bag with hot water and a drop of fairy liquid. then seal the bag. Fill the tank then with hot water. Using the bag saves having to clean the gunk out of the tank. Thanks for the heads up CT.

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

I think if you look at adverts.ie you'll see the Omega seamaster mid-size (truthfully worn by my wife more so than myself at 36mm but it means she babied it after we got it NOS. Babying a seamaster in this case meaning she refused to get it wet... it's a dive watch (that has been serviced so absolutely can dive again and actually relumed by the servicer too).

Do let me know if you're at all interested (no silly asking prices from myself ;) )
