Great to have so many options. If Daithi was fully fit I wouldn't mind seeing him at midfield, excellent there for Turlough and he's a lot better hurler than he gets credit for.

Whilst I agree that Daithí is excellent further out the field, we just don't have anyone capable of filling in for him at full back.
Especially when we have good options out the field anyway in the 2 Mannions, Coen, David Burke for mid.
And S. Cooney and GMac for CB.
I'd like to test out Fintan Burke at full next year if we get a proper league but wouldn't throw him in at the deep end in championship.

Is John Hanbury on the panel this year?

No, that was his own choice also, not a case of him being dropped off it.

I don't think C. Mannion was in midfield. TV does make things very difficult to work out. But shortly after the ball was thrown in Duignan stated Galway had made a few positional changes. So as far as I could work out for start of the game I believe we lined out as:

    Murphy

    Loftus
    GMAC
    Harte

    Joseph Cooney
    Shane Cooney
    Fintan Burke

    P. Mannion
    Johnny Coen

    C. Mannion
    JC
    Conor Cooney

    Concannon
Whelan (played out the field but didn't really switch with anyone)
    Flynn

Conor Cooney and JC were quiet but watching it back it looks like SON is expecting a dogged and fit half forward line to bottle the middle and drop back to help out leaving a lot of space for the lads up front. Every ruck near our half back line Conor Cooney was usually close by. May be what's needed to stop teams going through the lines. Wexford and Limerick being two of the major ones.

I think harte was wing back, lofus and GMAC were a 2 man full back line with Shane cooney in a free role

Any word on fintan burke injury or will it be kept under tight wraps in the camp. Won't want kilkenny to get word especially if daithi is not fit for a return. I'm sure he would love to get a crack at Colin fennelly with him in full of his health after their clash in all Ireland club final.

FYI about the game against Sligo

"Sligo GAA will issue a statement tomorrow in relation to a number of Covid-19 cases in panel. More players in isolation and awaiting testing so game on Saturday vs Galway is in doubt"

    Surely Gmac picks up Fennelly.
Happilylost posted the Fintan was reportedly OK and didn't even need a scan.

They'll have to forfeit if they can't field. There's no time available for deferrals. Not ideal for our lads who need game time.

Get Jimmy in for a session if it doesn't go ahead.

Would feel for the Sligo panel if it was a walkover. Going by last two League matches they'd have had given it a rught cut.

Hopefully all affected on the Sligo panel make a speedy recovery.

Sligo's last 2 league games have been far from impressive.

Stapleton really does have an axe to grind with Galway doesn't he!? :pac:

He makes a debate & point of Concannon being in the team & only includes 1 Galway player in his own TOTW after hammering Wexford by 13 points.

The official GAA team named has 4 Galway players.

Here he was before laughing off that JC is one of the greats too.

    Strange behaviour.

He had to work with Ger Gilroy and Joe Molloy for years. Surely that's caused this significant brain trauma.

Losing to Carlow and Limerick in their last two league games and conceding 3-33 didn't suggest they would have given established Div 1 team like Galway a right cut.

Best of luck to the 7 Sligo lads that tested positive, hopefully a quick and fully recovery for all.

Eamonn O'Hara tweeted to say the Sligo v Galway game is off.

Galway Bay fm Sport understands that the Connacht SFC semi final between Galway and Sligo is OFF.

A statement from the Sligo GAA county board is imminent but the game has been conceded so Galway are through to the Connacht final against either Mayo or Roscommon without kicking a ball.

It appears Sligo GAA felt a postponement of the game wasn't an option as the infected players and those waiting on test results would still have been unavailable for a refixture.

Reports emerged yesterday of multiple cases of Covid 19 in the Sligo panel, with only 18 to 20 players allegedly available for Saturday's game in Pearse Stadium. Seven positive cases have been confirmed, with test results awaited by several others from the Sligo squad in the next 24 hours.

    Sligo GAA statement.

Sligo GAA have taken the tough decision to withdraw from this weekend’s Connacht SFC semi-final versus Galway.

Paul Taylor and his management team along with the panel of 32 players have been working together since September. Due to the unforeseen circumstances of players testing positive for Covid-19 and other players deemed as close contacts, makes it impossible for Sligo to fulfil the fixture.

The county board executive along with the players and management are extremely upset at having to make this decision. The players themselves are hugely disappointed at not having the option of a re-fixture and feel the outcome has been forced on them, whilst understanding that in these unusual times it is not possible to take part this coming weekend.

All affected by Covid-19 findings are following the requisite HSE guidelines and we are glad to report doing well at this time.

Sligo GAA have informed GAA officials at Croke Park and Connacht GAA of this regrettable but correct decision.

Disappointing from a Galway viewpoint. Should have had to play 2 championship matches to get to a Connacht final (NY & Sligo).

Disappointing for Sligo too - train all year and dont get to play championship

Do you go with Mulkerrin on O Shea. For me it would be Sean Kelly picking him up. That forward line wouldn't frighten too many. Outside of Walsh there's no pace there.

O Shea ran riot the last day. Sort out that problem and Galway are half way to winning...

Eugene Cloonan was named senior manager of Graigue Ballycallan tonight.

That's the team he scored a goal against in the club All-Ireland Final nearly 20 years ago using their fullback's hurl.

Had a lot to do with how poorly he was marked by Sean Andy. The main forward that Galway need to stop his influence is Cillian O'Connor.
