You were probably at Hopkins and Leftfield possibly or maybe even Hot Chip, they were all on at the same time.

^^^^ the comments in that article from the organisers are certainly encouraging, definitely seems like they're taking the feedback on board, which is great.

Yea I agree the comments are somewhat reassuring. For me the real question remains "what festival does ATN want to be?" And what does that mean for its profitability.

If it wants to be a small festival aimed at families and over 21s with a chill atmosphere they might not make enough money to actually put it on in the way they did in 2018. We know they lost money that year.
To make money or at least enough to make organising the festival worth it they might need to pair back on something. I fear it will be the acts and I would be fine with that.

It will be interesting see what direction this goes in.

I think the commercialisation is unavoidable - it's pretty much the only way you can run a free flow festival with such a top heavy lineup. They'd either have to scale back on lineup and maintain artistic vision (ala Body and Soul), or vice versa (ala EP)

I don't think there's any chance of them retreating to the Body and Soul model. Their vision is pretty clear. They'll have to find a traffic solution, park and rides, whatever, that accommodates their numbers but I don't think the commercial aspects are going away. And an initial line up announcement that doesn't have the oomph that this year had could be a killer for them too. They face a challenging year. I'll be interested to see what they come up with.

Another solution would be to up the ticket prices or condense it into a 2 day festival of Saturday and Sunday. Could potentially let people arrive from Friday and stay over then too

They could always start selling off the naming rights to stages. Not sure how much money they'd get for it but that tends to be how European festivals work. Nobody bats an eyelid about going to watch a show on the Ray Ban or Heineken stage instead of Road to Nowhere or Something Kind of Wonderful.

But, as I say, maybe there just isn't much money in it. They've already sold off the rights to that coca cola wooded area too, and the Samsung thing was there too this year.

I've no issue with commercialisation but I'd like them to be wary of what they partner with and how big a spot it is. Things like Just Eat etc have an obvious benefit at festivals but you'd have to wonder about things like Electric Picnic's awful Vape area. Is that still there?

i look forward to reading this later..

(on a side note, woke up with Neneh's "Shotgun Shack" in my head this morn.. the buzz lives on)

yeah, I wouldn't really have an issue with the stages being named after sponsors either. as you say, no-one really cares at Primavera etc., as long as the music is good (and the sponsor has no creative control).

I'd prefer if they just scrapped the Samsung thing and renamed the Road To Nowhere stage to the Samsung stage, and got a bit of extra cash.

the mirrors in the Samsung Maze were cool, but another little DJ stage playing generic house and disco to pretty much nobody for the whole day (like that Vape place) is the last thing most of these festivals need.

I didnt even mind the samsung maze tunes as much, it was just in the wrong spot and much too loud if you ask me.

Took away from the 4 or 5 stages surrounding it imo.

Not sure where else I'd put it, maybe along the Avenue?

Sponsored stage names, all for it. It's a good way to commercialise without actually losing anything but a stage name.

I get this festival is a commercial venture and am more than ok with that. Theres a balance to be struck somewhere though and what that balance is depends on what the festivals actual vision is.

if you want to email 2 of the people in charge at POD:

rbutler@pod.ie - Robbie Butler, Director of POD
will@pod.ie - Will Rolfe, Director of ATN

Sensible and constructive emails are probably better, rather than a whinge about how you sat in traffic or got stung by a wasp. I'm sure they're aware of those issues.

Is that the DJ Robbie Butler? He was banging out all the classic Red Box tunes on Sunday night. Cafe Del Mar, Bedrock etc etc. Bliss

I know I was watching Josh Wink and Hammer at Arcadia but when I nipped over to the loo I stuck my head into the big tent for a bit of Phat Planet which sounded absolutely wicked.

Brain zaps!! What a fantastically accurate phrase for what i was experiencing up until last night. I woke up wednesday with my head pulsing... was convinced I had vertigo, i was so dizzy. Felt absolutely nothing on Monday or Tuesday, they only seemed to kick in wednesday and Thursday in particular. I'm fairly sure they're gone altogether as of this morning.

What in gods name are they about? Can't remember drugs having that effect on me when i was younger. Must be an after effect of some mixer they add to pills these days?? Freaked the **** out of me!

Lads! You're all taking the wrong stuff, Irish magic mushrooms are the only way, closed loop festival enhancer, that's free to obtain, and free of criminality, and an anti-depressant, you leave a festival feeling better than when you went in. It's got such bad press for years from people who overloaded on them for their first and only time. The same as somebody dropping 10 Es on their first go.

What made you say this? That would be class. Throw in New Order and that would be perfection.
