Damn! Too late. Trying to do backup before caused problems, lads said it was because the online update had corrupted :-( I'm in a bit of a loop here...

What have you done!!!! Those boxes are extremely complex and its a steep learning curve! Go back and do the pressing both buttons to get it back.

My thoughts are he cannot do a backup if he has no hdd or usb setup correctly and the one with image would have needed a format again and setup on box would it not.

Indeed But got it back now.

So I initialised the Cruzer blade, it worked, progress! I then converted from ext3 to ext3. It worked!

From MENU>SETUP>SOFTWARE MANAGEMENT I select backup settings///I got a pipe error broken pipe:

I wish you would do a few more screen grabs. like the image so I can get a handle on the system. When you do a backup you get asked is it to HDD or usb and in your case you should opt for USB unless the usb is seen as a HDD. The loaction is selected by colour keys.

I got openatv 6.1 on a box and its flawless for ages, ie I dont upgrade at all.

Just to be clear the idea is to get box set up correctly and then if you so desire try an update BUT you need to have a backup to fall back on.

I really appreciate you supporting me! Does below help, please tell me what else you would like? When I select backup settings (that's what others were saying to backup rather than image) it goes straight to the screen below, followed by backup completed pop up when I close it. There is no intermediate question about HDD/USB.
Maybe I should forget about an UG, it seemed sensible considering how out of date it is but it's been a total nightmare.

So I went to advanced options and set backup location to cruzer blade and the ran backup settings and it worked fine!

I'll have to copy the backup file off the blade if I try another flash. Maybe there is no point...why would it work this time?

You have to say a bit more, have you got 2 cables from dish to box? tell me the name of the skin, go menu setup usage gui, skin setup , should tell you skin. I have metric hd skin.

Do you just want to watch TV channels? Do you want to record?

The usb has been recognised as a backup location and it has enough space for files, thats why it worked.

You have a bigger usb that you can use as a HDD. Put that in and initialise it.

Because you started an online update and the image was so old it caused some problems.

I have 2 cables from dish to box, yes. I was thinking of perhaps cutting one in the attic and connecting an aerial for saorview, but that's another day's work.

Gerry helped me setup MetrixHD before, that's my skin.

I would like the option to record sometimes - I don't have access to ITV otherwise.

When I try and initialise either of the 2 128GB new Kingston USBs I still get the same error:


I guess I need to get a Cruzer Blade 128 ? :-(

I will have a quick look at my set up and see what I would do to get usb mounted.

Had a look, did you try all the usb ports?

And when you plugged in usb you should do a restart.

Can you use putty as in telnet? are you using windows please tell me version.

There is a solution but its a bit techie.

Thanks! I have tried both the USB on the front and the back. I just tried to initialise it after a restart. Same error always. I have used putty/telnet before. My machine is running Windows 10 Home. Is there some way to initialise over telnet then?

I am thinking of returning the kensington 128 and getting a cruzer blade, but would have to wait some days then.

Yes you can flash box using telnet/putty. I just checked a few usb's and the duff ones I have are... kingston. Others that I use are integral, and of course sandisk cruzer. Now I did buy a 256gb stick recently its branded mymemory and I have it working a treat in a zgemma h2s which is about 5 years old.

To do the update you need a fast BB and you must have box connected to internet. To make sure box is connected can you do a network test and then try to download plugins. You don't need to install any plugins. Also you need that good usb connected and recognised as USB HDD. to check usb press record button on remote while viewing.

To really help you get WINSCP and dreamboxedit. I have win 10 and 8.1.

I am setting up the zgemma by flashing via telnet and it will be same image, its openatv6.3.

This sounds great. I have returned the Kingston ones and will not use them again. The mymemory branded is probably sandisk or something good then. My box has a cat6 connection.



I'll make time as soon as i can and get all those bits lined up. When I have I'll let you know I am ready to do the telnet flash.

They are excellent to deal with. If it is in stock you often have it by next days post or you can collect from Celbridge office if really in a hurry. No connection to them other than as a very satisfied customer.

They ship to me for £2.95 but the irish one is free so well spotted. Get a few sticks say one for 8gb and you could use that for the epg. Also you can use that 32gb as a HDD as well and leave the backup on it. That 256 I'm using is working good and I have epg on it as well.

My experience has been different. I ordered from the .ie site on 21 Jan, it turns out it was dispatched from Switzerland on Jan 22 and has only arrived today :-(

Ahh I see. Well I can tell you the MyMemory 256GB initialised straight away and converted to ext4, recording pop up screen came up straight away when I tried it.

The telnet flash worked, really easy to do, thanks to @swoofer I now have Grogbuild installed with OpenATV 6.3.0 (2020-01-29) and Kernel / Drivers: 4.10.6 / 20180408 with Slyk-1-hd skin. Accessing the formuler1 via OpenWebIf is nice, plenty to learn there.

Result anyway!

I have a few things to figure out like how to setup favourites and I can't find the ITV channels - I had them before with OpenATV 6.1.

Well indeed. I got it upgraded, thanks. I'm looking at running the flash now via Putty and trying to get rid of the sky channels. Bit of a learning curve...

If you had autobouquet maker i would set it to freesat and rescan as it removes many non working ones like movies and sports.

Get DreamEdit. Its free. Basically connects to box wirelessly over your lan an allows you to take in the channel list on the box, edit it and send it back

I reran the script over Putty and selected UK this time instead of Ireland, that's the key to get freesat - thanks @swoofer. So all the sky stuff removed. Thanks all!

Hi would anyone have any suggestions on how I can change the channels minus the remote control , I cant change from BBC1 which the box boots into on start up, I can order another remote but I want to stay in touch with the news etc given the current situation .
I have tried a number of phone apps ( my phone has a IR port) but Forumuler is never listed as a manufacturer

A quick and dirty workaround to change channels on any enigma box is to use the WEBIF function. Simply enter the box network address (192.168.xxx.xxx) into any web browser on your home network. In the EPG section clicking onto a channel name switches the box to that channel.
There's loads of other useful functions in there too.

Hi all, I'm still not able to record on Formuler F1 box. I'm clearly doing something wrong. The external HDD is initialised and mounted. The box looks like it's recording (red light on the channel, warning that "a recording is about to start",etc) but there is nothing listed in "Recordings". There must be a solution to this. I'm running OpenATV 6.1. It works fine/problem-free.

are you able to a screenshot of your settings under recordngs, I have 6.1 as well and its ok on tiviar. When you say external HDD do you mean a usb stick or an actual hdd with usb cable? And dd you try all usb ports? Have you anything in the other usb ports?

I have an f1 and record on an externally powered hdd with no issues using Openvix
What button are you pressing to see your recordings

Button under fast forward should bring up your recordings.
