I plugged in the 128GB Kingston USB this evening and selected initialise. It progressed getting to 99/100 waiting for mount... then it gave an error timeout elapsed, sorry. Trying a second time gave the same error :-(

    That's what I thought ☹️
Brand new. I opened the seal.
    USB 3.1/3.0/2.0
Gutted. Nothing has never worked straightforward with this 2nd TV project of mine.

I plugged into Windows 10 and got the message to format. I did this and then reinserted to the formuler but got the same error on initialise :-(

At this stage you'd have to wonder if there is a hardware issue. Perhaps not enough power going to the usb port or some such.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,103 ✭✭✭greasepalm

What happens if you insert usb into rear of box and format it on box, make sure no other usb drive connected while powered off insert format then initialize and see what happens.

Ok. I received the replacement Kingston USB today and opened the brand new one this evening. I formatted it on my windows computer and then initialised it on the formuler. It got to 99/100 waiting for mount... then it gave an error timeout elapsed again :-(

@Gerry, what do you mean hardware issue? I bought the F1 new and it's practically unused. It's plugged in normally, I have no current issues in my house so I can't see how there would be a power issue for the usb?

@greasepalm, how do I find the option to format it on the F1?

I was thinking if there was an internal fault in the box so it couldn't deliver enough power to the USB socket.

Normally on pc its fat 32.
Into rear of box when powered off, insert then power on,see if you can see storage device= your kingston usb and size, format on box first, when finished initialise it gives you an option maybe ext 3 - ext 4 = yes to 4

Openvix image goes straight to ext 4 when initialised.

I've never opened mine. Have you heard of failures with F1 before?

A little confused. I thought you suggested formatting the usb on the F1?

The steps I have followed up to now
    1. Formatted brand new Kingston USB 128GB on my Windows 10 machine
    2. Inserted into back of F1, Select Setup, USB, it sees the Kingston, red for Initialise and I get the error.

What additional steps are you proposing? Thanks!

Can you stick up a photo of the kingston usb and package.
Other users have had issues with usb sticks and told to try another
Strange as 2 have given issues and kingston

Found this on another forum for doing your usb sticks.

I downloaded this utility and used the "Check Disk" on the 1st Kingston:
    72 KB in 13 indexes.
    Check Disk Callback: 26
70207 KB in use by the system.
65536 KB occupied by the log file.
    130979128 KB available on disk.
4096 bytes in each allocation unit.
32767743 total allocation units on disk.
32744782 allocation units available on disk.
    Check Disk: Finished OK

Thats a lot of stuff on a blank formatted usb.
When plugging into pc does it say its near the 128gb.

Deffo sure its not reading pc hdd as you dont want to format that.
Wonder if there are partitions on the usb and did you format it with the above tool on the kingston?

Check disk can be used if hdd on pc is having issues ,but you want to format the kingston usb.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 895 ✭✭✭boardtc

@greasepalm, when I connected the first usb to my windows machine it said it needed to be formatted (It had previous got to 99/100 initialisation on the F1), so I did a quick format in windows. I then ran the check diskj with this utility and got above. I will format it again with this utility tonight.

The people who have used this same Kingston 128 USB on the F1, have had no issue right?

The F1 is an ongoing nightmare for me. Nohting has worked it seems.

swoofer, mine is 2 years old, all of this messing with the kingston is so I can get it upgraded! :-(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,901 ✭✭✭swoofer

I read back and found this

Pressing the red button and software updates show 200 available. Pressing green say's my "image is out of date and after such a long time, there is a risk that my Formuler F1 will not boot after online update, or will show disfunction in running image. A new flask will increase the stability. An online update is done at your own risk!! Do you still want to update?"

That was your mistake. never ever do an online update unless you know exactly what you are doing.
The software is now corrupt so you have to do a reflash using a usb stick. when flashing I use a small usb 4gb, 8gb, 16gb or even 32 gb but I have not tried using 128gb. I hope you have a few usb sticks and that box has 3 usb slots but the rear one is preferred for flashing. Do you know how to flash with usb? Did box come preloaded?

    ok

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 895 ✭✭✭boardtc

Thanks very much for diagnosing it! It came pre-loaded. I'm unsure at this point without searching the post for instructions how to flash.

I have 2 USB 128 at the moment, I have not sent back the replacement one yet.

I an currently doing a format of one using the utility you sent, after at least 30 min it seems about 10% done :-( I clicked verbose.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,103 ✭✭✭greasepalm

They say for flashing boxes max size of 8gb stick with image only.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 895 ✭✭✭boardtc

Thanks for advice. I have a 2GB, 32GB. I found a 8Gb compact flash card and I have a USB adaptor, not sure if that will be picked up on it. I searched the thread but am unsure, if anyone had recorded the flashing steps for the F1 that would be appreciated.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,901 ✭✭✭swoofer

Use the 2 gb but format to fat 32 first use the pc. go here for instructions and for latest image, go slow and just get box working. this is a brand new image and I have it on a vu+ uno and so far its good. It has a nice skin as well Vixblue hd.

    If unsure just ask

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 895 ✭✭✭boardtc

I had a 4GB Kingston I used, formatted using the recommended utility. I followed the instructions and it said flashing on the screen, it never went away, 20 hours later it still says flashing :-( What should I do?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,901 ✭✭✭swoofer

that is a bind!! im watching footie, barcelona v athletico so ignore typos. can you say exactly what you did with the file and did you look at file on usb stick, did you only try one usb slot, did you remove all cables, did you power off at wall. try usb at front

But did box boot up after you took out usb?

oops waiting 20 hours shows patience.

I think it qualifies for going slow as you suggested alright :-)

    1. I formatted the usb and copied the unzipped formuler1 directory into it
    2. With the F1 powered down and power cable removed from back I put the usb stick into the back usb slot
    3. I put the power cable back in and watched the screen, it picked up the version number in the usb stick
    4. I pressed the side button
    5. It said flashing....I waited 5, 10 min, 15....left it for night and next day....
    6. I was afraid to take out the USB but just did now, nothing changed so I pulled the power cable
    7. It just says formuler on the screen now, nothing else happens, TV gets no input. All my channels gone. Officially gutted :-(

I would format the usb stick again and download a fresh copy of the image in case its faulty.
