    I know this??

Hence why I said, have a binding referendum and be done with it

There's no value to be got by forcing them to stay if they don't want to?

A minority of people don't want to stay. Why would you allow a minority of people impose their ideology on the majority?

Has Puigdemont actually announced a Provisional Government - i.e. who are the Ministers?

It'll be interesting to see the arrangements around security and defence.

I do think this is a worrying comment....they shouldn't have to fight for something...if they vote for it??

Let them hold a proper and binding poll...no need for violence from anyone

Absolutely, I don't know why the Spanish govt just didn't allow the referendum in the first place, from what I understand its likely independence would have been rejected.

For what it's worth I've said plenty of times on this thread that I can't really see this ending in violence, at least not wide scale civil war style violence, apart from anything else only one side has an army.

Just like in Ireland, it would need to be approved by the Catalonian parliament before it would be put to the people in a referendum.

    Not that difficult to understand.

It's odd that we're allowed to have two threads about Catalan, which affects us in no way, but not even one about Brexit, which is massive for Ireland.

    You don't get it.
If the Catalans wanted to do it by the book then they should have put it first to the actual vote within parliament.
If parliament then said yes we are in favour then a legally binding referendum could have been carried out.
Those that wished to stay in Spain then could have gone to vote without police interference and more than likely puigdemont would have lost and the Spanish government would have saved both money and the embarrassment they suffered on October 1st.
    This is democracy.

Parliament would not had said yes which is why they held it. (Both sides had issues, they did not really give much time to respond to it).

    Exactly.
It would be some kick in the face to Madrid if on December 21st pro independence parties won.
    They'd have no choice then.

Hundreds of thousands have turned out in Barcelona in a pro-Spain rally

    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-41794087

    Also
A poll published by Spanish national newspaper El Pais on Saturday suggested a small majority of Catalans (52% to 43%) were in favour of the dissolution of the regional parliament and the holding of elections.
Fifty-five per cent of Catalan respondents opposed the declaration of independence, with 41% in favour.

They did put it to a vote in the Catalonian parliament and they couldn't get the majority of votes so decided to press ahead with the referendum and delcare the results legally binding!

This is the whole crux of the issue, they couldn't get a majority of votes in their own Parliament so they broke the rules of their own Catalonian statutes!!! They couldn't even get a majority of votes when they declared independence two days ago!

You are wrong, they did get the majority vote in parliament (you know what majority means?). They did not get the *super majority* that is written into the Catalan process from the Spanish constitution. You have a habit of throwing words around without a real understanding of what they mean

300,000 Catalans turned out today in Barcalona to show support and to stay part of Spain. It’s pretty clear the majority want to stay part of Spain. Fair play to them!

How do you know that 1000's of those people weren't fresh off a bus from Madrid and other parts of Spain?

How is that pretty clear? A referendum is the clearest indication but as we all know, that was not allowed as it was deemed to be not legal and the voters were battered off the streets.

A gathering on the streets today is pretty clear evidence according to some :pac:

it's not clear the majority want to stay part of spain. it's clear however that the majority want to become an independant republic. lots of those people at the protest were probably bussed in from spain.
