Serious conflict on the show today between Ciara and an economist (Marie Sherlock) from SIPTU. Conversation started on the disparity between average earnings in public sector and private sector. Ciara was adamant that it is a massive problem that the private sector workers ultimately fund public sector pensions and benefits which they in the private sector will never enjoy.
Lasted almost twenty minutes and got very heated at times.

I said it previously, but I really enjoy debate (not outright arguments) on the radio.

Marie was very evasive & her answers were deflective. Ciara was trying to get her to answer the questions she asked & not the ones Marie wanted to answer.

I agree though not the most enjoyable to listen to

No. I wasn't quite clear. I did enjoy it. Felt it was close to an argument but still more on the side of being a debate. It ended fairly pleasantly too I thought.

While I enjoy this type of radio where people are asked to defend their positions, I can see contributors pushing back a bit if they think they are going to be grilled as Marie was done today.

It will be interesting to see if she comes back for the conversation on improving pay rates in the private sector as she said she would today.

I hope you're over it by now.. perhaps a set of earphones would help.. like a previous poster uses.. but left on of course when you are ordering a sandwich...
I admit she went a bit rogue today..

I know where your are coming from. There was a debate on some Newstalk show recently between a doctor and a pharmacist about giving more responsibilities to pharmacists. The doctor in particular really went for the pharmacist but both were at all times respectful, didn't cut across each other, no shouting etc. They got their points across without any of the nonsense that passes for debate on some shows.

Had the misfortune to be in somebody else's car today with her on. The topic was Trump.
Well it was classic Ciara Kelly. The tone of her voice when someone came on air who dared to disagree with her!
She had said that the majority of Irish people would not welcome Trump. When some joker asked her to prove this she was less than please to admit that she had no actual proof other than anecdotal evidence from some of her 'friends'
Then another guy was on about how economics. Can't remember the thrust of his argument but he annoyed the hell out of her!!

I would love to hear her discuss the CBB controversy - but not a chance in hell that it will be covered (objectively) on this show as it doesn’t suit the narrative.

He said that globalism had removed a huge number of semi-unskilled jobs from America. They were sucked up by China. He also said the US was independent of foreign imports for a lot of resources including oil. He said that China and Europe were already conceding to Trumps's economic demands as they had no choice. The jobs were coming back. All good for the American working class.
She didn't listen to a word and just came up with the usual media tropes. She even brought up Trump grabbing pussies as a last resort. Don't know how that is related to economics.
There should be compulsory lessons for all Irish media types. Think for yourselves and don't blindly repeat what you hear from your peers. They must have very boring social occasions with the famous uniformity of opinion.

Stuck in a taxi and the first time I've heard this disingenuous idiot in about 6 months. Thankfully moved the dial.

Newstalk missed an opportunity today. Instead of focusing on stay at the mums they could have had a segment on stay at home parents

There should have been a stay at home mum and dad in the studio sharing their experiences. More interesting in my opinion. Well more interesting than listening to Ciara trying to get all the women to say how hard done by they are.

Many men would love to be at home with the kids. I'd have done it in a heartbeat myself. A balanced show would have made better radio imo

Oh come on, thos is sich a what about men statement. There is an ESRI research out today that shows how lack of affordable childcare especially affects women.

    https://www.irishtimes.com/business/economy/high-childcare-costs-keeping-women-out-of-workplace-study-1.3617000?mode=amp

So maybe you should complain to ESRI that the research is limited and there are gazillions of men in Ireland they ignored who are staying at home because of high childcare costs.

There are 1000s of stay at home dads. The show totally ignored them. That's all I was saying.

It could have been a genuinely interesting show to have a stay at home Dad & Man in the studio. It would have been interesting to hear how it effects both of them the same or differently.

This segment of the show was like being a non cyclist trying to join in on the conversation on the cycling forum. You feel like an outsider looking in.

For a show that constantly gives out about discrimination & exclusion it comes across as hypocritical by only showing one side of the story.

But but but men....rape....sexism....etc. Ciara knows best. Alternative opinions are not welcome.

Always an excuse to defend Ciara's handling of something.

She doesn't need to listen because in her head her opinions are fact. And if you disagree with her you're sexist.

When a texter proved her wrong about one of her arguments on Trump she replied by saying "I won't say anything in reply to that, I'll just be the bigger person". "You can prove anything with facts" was essentially her tone.

She is a terrible radio host and has no business on the radio whatsoever but you can argue the same way about a lot of the roster on Newstalk these days.

    Glazers Out!

So you think she shouldn't discuss research because it doesn't mention men. Ok. Or should she invent stats for men so that both genders will be represented?

I was driving yesterday and caught this topic too. I cannot believe that Newstalk does not have a producer in her ear telling her to allow the callers to speak. The constant interruption when someone has a point she disagrees with is unbearable. Some of her arguments were ignorant at best. How she is allowed to continue to present in this manner in beyond me. If a male presenter conducted himself in this manner people would be up in arms.

Show me where I said any of that? Oh that's right, I didn't.

Actually you are right you didn't say much you just implied a lot. A cowardly way of not stating what you really think.

    Cowardly? :pac:

I've stated repeatedly what I think of her, her bias, her lack of preparedness, her lack of professionalism, her amateurism, and above all, her misandristic preachings.

I dont't care what you think of Ciara Kelly. You dismissed the ESRI research as an excuse. So what is the problem about her discussion of one of main news items this morning. You are still avoiding the subject.

Sorry, but I did no such thing.

My comment was actually directed at you and your avoidance of the previous posters legitimate question as to could she not have had some balance on her show by including a stay at home parent who happened to be male.

Oh right so the balance can be achieved only if man tells women why is expensive childcare affecting their job prospects. And what should change. I get it.

Ciara on the fact that it's women who give birth:

"Is it fair that women are disadvantaged in this way."

    Basic biology I'm afraid.

She also came out with this very strange sentence:

"If we accept as a society that we need somebody to have children, lets not identify the gender, but we all know"

I didn't actually say any of that either.

I'm guessing you've never actually been in a proper, organised debate; nor do you engage in listening or reading what was actually said or written before replying?

I can see why you like Ciara Kelly's show though based on your posts.
