Ciara on the fact that it's women who give birth:

"Is it fair that women are disadvantaged in this way."

    Basic biology I'm afraid.

She also came out with this very strange sentence:

"If we accept as a society that we need somebody to have children, lets not identify the gender, but we all know"

The female gender had asked not to be named to protect its "gender identity" I take it.(dah-dum-tish).

    Glazers Out!

Oh right so the balance can be achieved only if man tells women why is expensive childcare affecting their job prospects. And what should change. I get it.

Can I Point out that childcare covered about 2 seconds of the show. The rest of the segment was about stay at home mums. Was it a difficult decision, do you regret it etc.

A possible solution to women suffering and struggling when they get back into the workplace is for more men to become stay at home dads. This wasn't explored in any way. Nothing was explored at all really.

It could have been a much more interesting segment if there was a little variation.

For the most part I like her show. I usually try talk about the positive parts of the show here but this segment rubbed me the wrong way today.

    Maybe tomorrow will be better

I actually agree with you the segment was not great, partly because callers direct conversation into certain direction and Larissa Nolan is completely useless on the subject of expensive childcare. But so would be a token stay at home dad.

You needed a couple of hours to figure out that reply. Good job, well done, you get a gold star.

No, I chose to attempt to beat traffic and leave boards alone for a couple of hours before revisiting the thread. Despite what you might think I have other things going on in my life and wasn't giving your witty and insightful comments my full attention initially. I posted my last comment after doing so. Please accept my most sincere apologies for my tardiness and not dropping everything to reply to you instantly and fully.

Newstalk missed an opportunity today. Instead of focusing on stay at the mums they could have had a segment on stay at home parents

There should have been a stay at home mum and dad in the studio sharing their experiences. More interesting in my opinion. Well more interesting than listening to Ciara trying to get all the women to say how hard done by they are.

Many men would love to be at home with the kids. I'd have done it in a heartbeat myself. A balanced show would have made better radio imo
    meeeeh wrote: »
Oh come on, thos is sich a what about men statement. There is an ESRI research out today that shows how lack of affordable childcare especially affects women.

    https://www.irishtimes.com/business/economy/high-childcare-costs-keeping-women-out-of-workplace-study-1.3617000?mode=amp

So maybe you should complain to ESRI that the research is limited and there are gazillions of men in Ireland they ignored who are staying at home because of high childcare costs.
    Sleeper12 wrote: »
There are 1000s of stay at home dads. The show totally ignored them. That's all I was saying.

It could have been a genuinely interesting show to have a stay at home Dad & Man in the studio. It would have been interesting to hear how it effects both of them the same or differently.

This segment of the show was like being a non cyclist trying to join in on the conversation on the cycling forum. You feel like an outsider looking in.

For a show that constantly gives out about discrimination & exclusion it comes across as hypocritical by only showing one side of the story.

Could any experienced folks in here point out the areas of her presenting where she is really bad? It's stated quite often that she is awful. I have gripes with her pronunciations and accentuation of words. But that's just me and wouldn't quantify as being of poor standard. I'm only at amateur / community radio level. So don't feel qualified to say she's poor. Would appreciate some good critique to try and learn from. Cheers guys.

I think she is OK most of the time. I blame the producer more than her for the bad segments. She is still learning her trade.

She's obviously not everyone's cup of tea but I believe she has increased listening figures compared to Hooks show.

Avoid using the term '...and all that kind of stuff' and the extended '...and all that kind of good stuff'. Not sure is she using it as a filler or as a catch all statement but it's damned annoying.

Actually I just couldn't be bothered expanding you completely missed the point because unlike you I actually did read about the research and listened to that part of the programme. I like to know a bit about the subject I am talking about before I start trading cheap shots. That's also my last reply to you because you drag me to your level and frankly I think I'm better than that.

I've no experience "In radio" but I've listened to a lot of it. A few things irk me with Ciara.

She picks a word in a sentence and ooooooover emphasizes it .The same way as the tabloids spell a word in red along with all the other black ones.

She spends a lot of time begging people to call, tex, email, tweet and all that stuff.

Pleeeeease. we'd loooooove to hear from you.

Today she was calling on people to get in touch with her to discuss whether they wanted a united Ireland, while all the time rattling off reasons not to have one. A bit like the build up to a Joe Duffy tellypole. Wall to wall balance.

*Disclaimer. I have no interest in the NI debate. I just came on this today.

I didn't actually say any of that either.

I'm guessing you've never actually been in a proper, organised debate; nor do you engage in listening or reading what was actually said or written before replying?

I can see why you like Ciara Kelly's show though based on your posts.

I'll bet you have a very high opinion of your own opinion... Are you the one in the taxi.. or the shop who.. who inadvertently hears the show.. poor thimg

Ah, yet another Ciara Kelly acolyte who rather than debating the merits or otherwise of the show and its host resorts to personal abuse. Playing the man and not the ball as it were.

    Great post though!

I’ll come back to this later, haven’t time to reply to it in detail at the moment.

One thing I will say is I absolutely do not drag you up to my level, I could only wish for such a thing. Had I successfully managed to do so your posts would be much more articulate, less emotional, wouldn’t be incorrectly attributing things to me and alleging I said things that I didn’t, you wouldn’t resort to personal abuse, and you’d have a fuller understanding of irony (amongst other things), stop assuming so much etc. etc.

Yesterday you criticised a poster who offered a suggestion that the feature in question would have been improved with the addition of a male stay at home patent, adopting the somewhat fashionable leftist SJW feminist viewpoint. You later then admitted the feature was “not great”; ignoring your earlier staunch defence of it and attempting to twist the conversation into something else, all the while decrying others for missing the point. The irony.....

Beautiful.. :D I hear that all the time. The microphone is a sensitive soul, and sometimes you can hear the back of her throat :D

The irony of you saying I missed the point is utterly laughable given your posting history and comments. Clearly other posters think so too judging by the thanks on my posts calling you out on this.

Once again you've made many assumptions in your reply without any validation - how do you know I didn't listen to the programme (either live or via a podcast)? How do you know whether or not I read the research? I could have been one of the authors or been involved in its collation and publication for all you know. I work in academia and research; preparing reports like this are what I do.

    meeeeh wrote: »

Again, utterly laughable. You frequently deliberately misquote me and attribute things to me that I did not say. When I ask you to show me where I said these things you claim I said you avoid the question - as has happened frequently. Yesterday you said I was cowardly - and that's not the first nor only time you've resorted to personal insults when you're clearly losing an argument.

Cool! I'd rather actually engage in healthy debate whereby the poster engages in discussing the topic at hand respectfully. As I said earlier, I only wish I could have dragged you up to my level. I apologise that I failed to do so.

Tomorrow they are having an anything goes session once again.

Chance for some people who dislike what Ciara normally covers on the show to dictate the agenda for one day. The opportunity many have been praying for I expect. I wonder will they avail of it?

I had it on with the sound down. No way I was going to listen to three Sindo "Writers" at the same time. She looked a bit animated at times but it looked very acted and stage managed.

Ah now. No point in calling in because something-something censorship!:(:pac:

(despite the fact that talk-show radio thrives on controversial debate).
