    Lovely bit of balance today

    clown world

Funny, it's one of the first times I've agreed with Ciara in a long time.

Lots of ostrich/climate change deniers texting the show.

That exchange between ciara and the mother from sandycove ( with the daughter named flossie) was the biggest south Dublin yummy mummy love in I think I've ever witnessed.

    Near parody

She was British, so she obviously had a UK accent. Her daughter is another kid who gives up her time cleaning the coastline, probably mainly due to adults who can't put their own rubbish in bins. I wish people could decide if kids are to be blamed for being responsible local members of the community or cynical layabouts who get driven around in SUVs.

Remember when Ciara accused a GP of being directly responsible for the death of her father, and then newstalk had to make an apology but Ciara never apologised.

I'm not sure what this has to do with anything.

That interview concerned chelation therapy in alternative medicine. Chelation therapy for things like cancer is a scam. It might be helpful if you'd clarify what your point is.

Big wins all around in Newstalk
Lunchtime Live, presented by Ciara Kelly, won Gold in the Interactive Speech Programme category.

It truly is the death of radio if they are now starting to hand out awards to people who stutter their way through an entire broadcast. These awards seem to be more of a political thing. If you have the right opinions, you get the nod. A bit like the Nobel Peace Prize, but with even less credibility.

Ciara Kelly has certainly be referred to as the "the greatest" something in this house alright, but it's not complimentary by any means and does not come with a plastic trophy.

When I heard she won, I knew one of the next posts in this thread would be something like this.

Yeah, "it truly is". When people use that expression, what follows "truly is" a massive exaggeration, every time.

It's a bit like when someone states "Fact" at the end of a dubious statement. They're kidding nobody.

Delighted that CK was awarded for her programme. It truly is a great victory for the Liberal, tree hugging, gender neutral urban agenda. Fact.

Regardless of Ciara Kelly, Newstalk is a bad joke of a radio station not that there's many better. The whole broadcasting experience has become very dumbed down and agenda driven in recent years.

Those awards are a joke, they are just shared around each year

I bet they’ll get John Connors to present her with it. They’re great buddies.

    It was last night.

Probably a joke there that I don't get. Maybe yeah. That's how award ceremonies usually work, recognisable people introduce awards. I dont think I'd recognise John O'connor if I saw him at a bus stop, but he's regularly mentioned on this forum so presumably he counts as recognisable. This is my long winded way of asking what's your point?

(BTW I do know he's a traveller but CK doesn't strike me as a bleeding heart when it comes to anti-social behaviour so..? )

Ah, you would. He’d be the only one at it.

    Has it really?

In what way was it better, say 25 years ago? What range of shows were on, what level of debate was covered, how controversial were the topics.

If I remember correctly, you had Gay Byrne, Pat Kenny (still present) and doing better than he ever was and Gerry Ryan. Gay only ever did an hour of a show so it is not like he was on 'all the time' or anything. Gerry is obviously gone but he really was a shock jock (which is fine) and I don't think losing that from the lineup could be considered dumbing down. Also, you have Niall Boylan on now which covers many of the same types of topics as Gerry did if not with the same style/panache as Gerry had. Plus, you have Today FM and NT on the scene now which didn't exist back then (as well as way more local and regional stations). You had Tony Fenton, who got ripped to pieces even at the height of his power for being a bit of an acquired taste.

Or even 10 or 5 years ago, what had we access to then that we don't now?

What exactly are you looking for that you think wasn't 'agenda driven' back then but is now?

Particularly the sports awards. It's really just passing the award around the OTB office. I do like Nathan though.

It's about time she was awarded. An outstanding presenter. Where else would you find thought provoking topics such as WAGs social media squabbles and dick pics?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,420 ✭✭✭✭sligojoek

In fairness that's a very serious topic. Joe Duffy even stopped a caller mid sentence to tell us all about it.

Anyone notice Ciara saying “and it was always ever thus” a fair bit lately?

I’ve only heard snippets of the show but have heard that phrase said a lot more than I would like.

She says "I hear ya" way too much for my liking, it's every second sentence.

I take your point I do I take your point,

    Ahhhh shut up Ciara.

Seems your not the only one. According to latest jnlr figures she's down 7,000 listener's.

I thought she was up a lot in the most recent figures - I remember her triumphalist Twitter posting. Are those new figures just out today?

Edit: oh right just found it.

The worst thing about Newstalk is the presenters do fake really badly. Ciara Kelly is the only voice on radio that would get me switching faster than the nasal wine of horror that Mary Lou.

She's been holding at in or around 100k since she took over the show. That's a pretty big drop given (as far as I know) nothing much has changed on the show.

I wonder what caused the drop?

Yeaaaahhh I know I know, I do I really do.

I don’t know the ins and outs of the story so I can’t comment but I’d love to hear what you think......
