If McGregor was british how many Irish people would say he has a decent chance against Mayweather?

    Mayweather DQ
I'm going more with Necrominus (see below) on this one, than you as I still think the analogies you're using are not totally accurate. It's one-on-one only- not a team sport. So over 10 minutes, maybe Ronaldo's skill will persevere- but over 90 minutes?

I'm looking at this from two perspectives (not knowing anything about boxing)- Skills and Agility.

Mayweather obviously wins on skill - and "skill alone" may still prove formidable in some sport that I just can't think of right now but it's not boxing.

McGregor has much more agility and on paper, resilience, simply taking his age and recent performance into account (my opinion)

On that basis, I do believe agility will win over skill.

I said "mark" which can be taken as a one-on-one contest. Not that his team would win but that the analogy would be that he would man-mark him out of the game.

I have seen no evidence that McGregor is more agile or resilient. He is definitely athletic and cut, he is in great shape, but I don't necessarily think he is more agile, even with the age advantage.

Some racist Irish guy takes on some wifebeater hauled out of the retirement home?

What has he done or said that makes him a racist, exactly?

Its funny though, that beside McGregor, Mayweather comes across as distinguished..it was the same with Nate Diaz, looked like the height of sophistication beside yer man..

No great interest in the fight, but it's some of the best marketing that has ever been devised. People are paying good money to make some marketers very wealthy. P.T Barnum would be proud.

Not a lot of British people seem all that found of mcgregor from what i've read on uk forums, quite a bit of anti irish sentiment, maybe his brashness reminds them of one of their travellers, not sure lol.

Lads, 'tis nonsense. Some racist Irish guy takes on some wifebeater hauled out of the retirement home? Save your money, go for a nice meal or a good film...relax, it's not a fight in any real sense of the word in any sport. Might as well cross Aussie Rules with rollerblading...

I think crossing aussie rules with rollerblading is called hurling :D

If he was seen as regional and funny and workingclass/underclass(whatever /however those terms translate) I think he would have massive support in Ireland.

Many British boxers/sportspeople have won our support over the years and I think there is something in all folks, everywhere, that has a leaning towards the sporting underdog.

    Irish or British.

I have no interest in this.

There is NOTHING at stake here. The loser walks away with a Euromillions-sized pot of prize money. So, where's the contest?

Would you step into a ring with Mayweather and play dead after, say, seven seconds, in order to walk away with 60m? I would!

    This isn't a sporting contest. It's a joke.

But, you have to hand it to the people doing the PR for it. In what is the silly season for news (very little politics about), they managed to turn it into a mainstream news, rather than a sports news, item.

Every news editor on TV and Radio has lapped it up. (Just 30 minutes ago, I heard it given almost 5 minutes on BBC Radio 4, before the 3(!!!) minutes of main sports bulletin. Incredible.)

Like much of Amercican sport, this is meaningless tripe. If the winner took the pot and the loser got only his expenses, THAT would be a contest.

But, all those involved know that there are fools born every minute, so good luck to them.

    D.

    In your opinion.

Maybe just maybe some people want to see them fight?

    What's the harm?

If Mcgregor wins he beats a guy who retired two years ago.

If Wayweather wins he beats a guy who isn't a boxer.

    Fair point.

But, I stand by my point that the type of news coverage is has been getting proves that it is NOT a sporting contest.

This is just theatre, bad theatre at that.

Listen, McGregor VS Mayweather aside. THIS is the big question about tomorrow night for me.

WHO GETS TO ANNOUNCE THE FIGHTERS??

Neither. They went with Showtime which means we get Vanilla Jimmy Lennon Jr

You know that bit when they talk **** to each others faces?

Could someone explain the difference to me between that and knacker callout videos?

Why is it a done thing?

I wonder has the t-shirt guy got another old t-shirt ready for the fight tonight, and his phone fully charged so he can film himself watching the fight, and in the event of a McGregor victory, rip his t-shirt to shreds in a fit of road rage?

All in his mam's front room.

Don't diss travellers bare knuckle fighting. A far more honest contest for far less money with no overtones of racism. It should be accepted as a proper sport here before MMA anyway, though can see why neither is recognised.

Ah look who's back. I thought you were gone for that long walk off a short pier, or browsing for restaurants open at 5am.

There mustn't be much food under that bridge of yours if you're out this early for a feeding;)

A win for McGregor and I'll be happy for him, what he has done for the UFC/MMA and for all of us here in Ireland. A win for Floyd will be little more than I expect to see.

What has he done for Ireland exactly? McGregor is an absolute embarrassment. I've been to America a few times since he has become "big" and the Americans, once they hear an Irish accent, imitate that ape and start jeering the Irish accent. They don't do it on purpose, simply because Americans are thick, but it's an embarrassing thing to be confronted with people imitating a clearly mentally challenged chap who knees fellas in the face for a living.

He's making huge money out of it, and fair play to him, as there are fools the world over who buy into this circus stuff he's involved in. However, I don't want to be associated with his bollocks carry on every time I go abroad.

I don't expect a classy erudite response, we are talking MMA after all, but genuinely puzzled by that reference!

Realistically you could talk about any sportsperson in the same fashion if you want to be pedantic like that.

For instance I'm a big soccer fan, but the 'carry on' by the hordes of fans who went to the Euros last year was quite cringe worthy looking at it outside of this nationalist pride bubble we as Irish sometimes seem to have.

Truthfully though, it doesn't bother me that much. I won't lose any sleep over lads getting patriotic over McGregor, Ireland's soccer team, the rugby team, athletics.... The list is endless. It doesn't matter to me because it really doesn't affect me. People will spend their money on what they want to and who am I or you to tell them they're wrong?

Calling someone mentally challenged just because you don't like their sport of choice is pathetic by the way.

315 posts. 10 of which are yours. You're one of the most prolific contributors to the thread. Why don't you take your own advice and ignore the event? And more pertinently why are you so hell bent on telling people not too watch it?
