I'd love to say that it was because of my love for the Rowan tree, but I literally didn't even know Quickbeam was a Rowan until MrsF pointed that out to me a few weeks ago. When chosing a name back in the glory days of 2006, it was a matter of chosing something significant but innocuous. So as a massive LotR fan I was trying to think of some of the less well known characters, especially those who hadn't made it to the films. It didn't even specicially have to be a tree, just any character that was little more than a cameo in the books, and Quickbeam just happened to be the first that came to mind.

Suits too. I do like beans of all varieties - especially those that are quick to make ;)

Still searching for that. Possibly going back to college in September to study psychology so hopefully something will come out of that that will give me an ideal job.

Saturday. I start it with a Parkrun which combines exercise and socialising - two things that I'm not naturally good at doing, so it gives the weekend a good kick-start. Then, whatever else I'm up to for the rest of the day, whether it be chillin' or partyin' (usually the former), I can do so with a guilt free conscience.
    sullivlo wrote: »

Weirdly, probably January. I'm not a huge fan of Christmas, to put it mildly, so knowing that it has passed for another year is a relief. I like cold days, where you can wrap up warm and sit by a fire. I like the short days and and early evenings when you can see the stars and my favourite constellations out at night. I like that it's an opportunity to have a fresh start, so no matter how bad the previous year was, then this is the start of a new year with new possibilities.
    sullivlo wrote: »

Definitely the age I am now (early 40s). I'm healthier now than I've ever been. Both physically and mentally. Physically because I'm eating better and exercising more. Mentally because I am more at peace with myself having spent years previously trying to change in to somebody I'm not. I've no money worries, I've no health worries, I've no personal worries. I've more hobbies than I've ever had before. Life is grand right now!

I can't really answer that as I've only ever done the one so I've nothing to compare it to. However, the plan is to diversify and as I'm in Dublin I've plenty of options to get started with. But it'll be unlikely I'll be trying any new ones in the next few months while I'm marathon training, but maybe afterwards. I do tend to be a creature of habit sometimes, so once I find somewhere handy I get in to a routine that's sometimes hard to shift.
    beakerjoe wrote: »

I really enjoyed last game. I liked that I managed to keep under the radar so that nobody spotted which Boards character I was, and that I was mistaken for both Mary and Nigel in the backrooms but Eva was never guessed. I was also kinda proud that I spotted Fiona (Mahama) as a goodie - I even said so in my back room in case anybody doubts it. But then, as Yoss said last week at the Meet, a stopped clock is still right twice a day, so it wasn't any talent that brought me to that conclusion and I totally missed Tig's three of Nigel, Clodagh and Isla, even defending them all at time.
    beakerjoe wrote: »

Well there's loads that I love that get loads of credit, so let's take them as a given. Those that don't get credit, that ought -

Rome - early HBO show that ran for only two seasons, detailing the fictionalised lives of real people of late Republican Rome (Julius Caesar, Marc Antony, etc), as well as the fictional lives of fictional people who witness historical events. Can't speak highly enough of it - great show.

Reign - kinda a guilty pleasure, as objectively speaking it's a bit crap. It deals with the life of Mary Queen of Scots as a teenager living at French court. But as silly and soap-operay as it is, it also doesn't take itself too seriously (unlike, say, The Tudors) and is actually really enjoyable.

Spartacus - plenty of sex and violence to satisfy anyone, but actually a really good and touching story underneath it all too.

I'm struggling to think of a non historical fiction series I can recommend. I guess I have a type. Maybe, Black Mirror, but that has probably got all the credit that it deserves.

    beakerjoe wrote: »

Unfortunately no. I don't mean, that I've seen it and I don't like it. I mean I've never seen it. Though it has been on my to-watch list for a while, it's highly doubtful I'll get to see it before next game at this stage.

I do a few Northside Park Runs (Mainly Clongriffin). Training for the Marathon myslef in Oct so used them as a nice way to build up the fitness slowly.

Will this be your first Marathon?

Do you have a fav Sport?

What was your fav childhood movie?

What Theme would you like in a future WW game?

Unworkable mechanics aside, what do you think is a cool game idea?

    Cats or dogs?

    Urban or rural?

AKA, Father Collins? Is is your first marathon? If so, have you checked out the novices thread in Running & Athletics? They're a great support.

    Yes,
    beakerjoe wrote: »

Not really. I used to watch tennis quite avidly about ten years ago but I no longer know most of the players any more. I never took up sport until I started running. Never followed any of the big stuff - soccer, gaa, rugby. The last soccer I followed was Italia '90!
    beakerjoe wrote: »

As a little, little kid, it'd probably be the original 101 Dalmatians. I'm pretty old, but not so much that I actually remember its first release in 1961, but I must have seen a re-release in the cinema some time in the early 80s and I loved it.

As an older kid, I guess I was still technically a kid when Jurassic Park came out, so that.

Lord of the Rings would be cool. So long as I get to play an Ent. :P

I ran in 2012, so I know whats ahead. Im out of shape compared to last time (2012) so slowly building myself up. Yeah Fr Collins, its the most local one for me but I have done Raheny and Malahide a few times too.

How far are you along in terms of training. Im hoping to do a 10k in august.

The advice Id give would be its a great experience, one of the best accompishments Ive done. In 2012 I was fairly fit before I began training, the most i ran in training was 20k a good few times. Stick with it and it will be worth it.

Oh and bring a few energy gels with you on the day, I felt they helped me a lot.

Unworkable mechanics aside, what do you think is a cool game idea?

I've had in mind a game idea, but I think it is actually unworkable. It's sort of a civil war game (whatever civil war you're having yourself, it doesn't matter). But you have two teams of more or less equal size trying to kill each other. A large percentage of each team has no roles, but there'd be a select few with roles, maybe both sides would have a seer, or one would have a seer but the other would have a bodyguard. Certain players might be able to communicate, but for the most part, you wouldn't know who was on your side so you could easily accidentally kill one of your own. Might even encorporate a captured move instead of a kill, where a player is out of the game, but can be ransomed back in to the game for a price, which would either be pre-determined, or negotiated between spokespeople from the each team. I think the mechanics would be hard because starting off with two equally powerful teams would be hard to work out. But then you could say that villagers and wolves are also equally powerful - one has the numbers, one has the kills. So, maybe, if I gave it more thought a proper game could come out of it.
    Cats or dogs?

Both!! I just love animals. I have cats who I love to bits, and volunteer with dogs. I'd love a dog (or more) myself, but it's not really possible in my current situation. You hear of women of a certain age getting broody for babies. Well, I get broody for dogs, especially if I see a cute one out and about with its owner, and I just have to go say hi :)

    Urban or rural?

I'm in the suburbs so, the best, or the worst of both worlds, depending on how you look at it. If I had to chose though I'd go urban, for the convenience of having shops, transport, banks, hospitals, etc close to hand. Though the older I get the more I do think that a rural abode, somewhere with no light polution, where I could have dogs, and grow vegetables or something, would be nice. Maybe in my retirement.

Following the plan set out in the novices thread, which is an adaptation of the Hal Higson plan. The furthest I've run so far is 14km. Before the marathon the furthest I'll have run is 32km!!! I did a 10km race there at the weekend, my first race ever, which was cool. Signed up to the rest of the pre-marathon race series too, so looking forward to those challenges. I'm not that fit, so I run slowly. Slowly but steadily, hopefully will get me across the line. What time did you do it in in 2012, and what time are you hoping for this year?

I missed out on the July one, but I plan on doing the 10 Mile one coming up in August. What time did you manage in the 10k?

Congrats on the first race, its a nice feeling isnt it? Bet you did it fast than you expected too.

Faster than I expected yes, but still really slow. Expected about 1:18, did it in 1:12.

Thats a great time, esp for your first race so dont sell yourself short. Esp in a Marathon, its all about steadying yourself. It will all stand to you come the big day. Fair play to you. I might wander over to the novice thread for advice. Im just lacking motivation to get off my backside. The Park Runs are great as I always wanna beat my time, but running alone on the weekdays sucks and I find it boring.

A hundred years on Mars. If I had music, and books, and TV I'd be grand.
If you could change anything in the world what would it be?

That lightswitch which shows as off when on and as on when off. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!
Whats the freakiest thing to ever happen to you.

Trying to explain to a flatmate why they shouldn't have used the kettle to make tea. I mean, literally, used the kettle to make tea - put the tea leaves and water together in to the kettle and then boiled it. They said that's how they do it at home (they were Swedish). They couldn't get why I was pissed at them for it.
If you could go back in time change something in history would you?

Nah, what's done is done. I've read enough sci-fi to know that it's never a good idea (11.22.63; Time and Time Again, etc).
What was in the briefcase in pulp fiction?

Everybody knows it was Marcelles Wallace's soul. Or maybe it was just a mcguffin.

I just like reading - almost any genre, except chick lit. I read classics, and fantasy, and sci-fi, and thrillers, and non-fiction. I like to alternate between a heavy read and a nice easy read. One of my favourite genres is post-apocalyptic or dystopian stories - so, The Stand, or Fatherland, or World War Z (or 11.22.63 and Time And Time Again as already mentioned). I like a lot of the classic sci-fi from the mid twentieth century too, so the likes of Day of the Triffids (John Wyndham), I Am Legend (Richard Matheson) or On the Beach (Nevil Shute).
    Necrominus wrote: »

I'm not sure I have a favourite. My Goodreads account says that Terry Pratchett is my most read author though. But I haven't actually read any of his in probably a decade. When I fancy something easy, especially after coming off a dificult book, I'd usually go for someone like Agatha Christie, or Lee Child for a bit of mindless entertainment.
    Necrominus wrote: »

The Big Bang Theory. Everybody hates it. And it's not cool to like it. And it's not even that funny. But it is a guilty pleasure to watch and know exactly what to expect from each show.

We have similar tastes so. Although for years I primarily just read Stephen King's stuff and that was it but recently I've tried branching out a bit further. Don't get as much time these days as I would like to sit down and read a book though unfortunately :(
