Yeah I really agree that we should have jet fighters. It's not as if we're going to be invaded, but it's still a deterrent and could be used in peacekeeping. Correct me if I'm wrong, but we haven't had jets since 1998?

Well it is a better option than to rely on RAF from the UK all the time as well.
Ireland should be capable of protecting its own airspace and borders and not rely on others to do it for us.
If SHTF i am not sure if RAF will be helping either,so all on our own.
Irelands neutrality is a bit unfortunate when you are stuck between US and UK

Of course, look how neutrality ended for Iceland and Iran during WW2, the Brits and Yanks take what they want when they want. Are there any official plans or proposals? We'd need a fair few fighters if we're to protect our airspace.

Exactly, thats what i was thinking too.
As far as i know its just a proposal for budget in 2024,and we have heard that before.
I am not sure if EU is involved either,if so,they might cover some of the cost.
I know EU are looking for a bit more independent defence of Europe and not rely on NATO so much anymore,so maybe.
And Gripen E is probably a good option, its a top notch fighter on par with Eurofighter,Rafale,f16 or anything the russians have to offer.
Its also cheap to maintain, and it comes in a package with AWACS included.
And its swedish, and in Europe,so you dont get caught in a political drama with US like other countries have experienced lately.

Waste of time thinking we can defend ourselves, we're just too small a population. Unless we turn ourselves into Switzerland, with everyone trained in military hardware, buying a lot more of it, having hollowed out mountains etc etc.

Yeah well hopefully they make a provision for that sooner rather than later. The defense budget was just over 1 billion last time I checked, so it would need a massive increase if what the article was saying it true.

How many planes are we talking? I don't know a huge amount about modern air forces, so I'm clueless about that. I remember seeing two of the current fighters flying near my house, nice to see them about anyway.

I am not sure how many is in the budget, but if you want a somehow effiecient air force you probably going to need atleast 15-20 fighters, you always need 2+2 on st.by for intercepting and the rest ready within an hour or two.
The advantage Gripen have is that they can land and take off at very short runways,i know in sweden even a lenght of a motorway would do,since they reckon airports will be the first to go if SHTF.
Also all maintenance and fuel can be done by mobile trucks and this saves some of the maintenance cost as well and the effiency.

Think they are underestimating that one billion euro price tag somewhat.
Even for something like the Saab Gryphen. What role do we want these aircraft in? All-weather night capability? Air to air interceptor? It's going to be pretty outdated and disadvantaged going up against some of the newer US and Russian fighters in that role. Ground attack capable? All of those have different weapons and electronics countermeasure systems and come with seriously different price tags. There is no one size fits all, maid of all work aircraft anymore. We left that behind somewhere in ...oh...Korea era technology?
And we won't go into parts supplies and manufacturing capability thereof in Ireland. pilot training simulators and who will we be fighting against in real flite time?As well as whatever we buy has to be upgradeable airframe in armaments and technology and engines,as technology advances
Can't see the DOD opening the purses for a few tons of JP9 every other week so patrols can be flown and some combat simulations can be run against say the RAF acting as " Red squadron" if they won't pay for bunker fuel for our navy.

Unless Europe wants to pay for this if they consider Ivan that much of a threat to the Western flank, we can't afford it out of our own nation's budget simply put. Or they donate to us some Gen 1 Euro fighters, which would be a somewhat cheaper option for us. Better off let the RAF deal with this one.

Everything the EU puts its hands to lately are turning to poop, Von der leyen is living up to her reputation as a bungler. I hear she walked out of the parliament yesterday before the Irish MEP's had a chance to ask her their questions about article 16, to appear before the media.

What guns can you own in Russia?
Seems a lot of shotguns and blank firing stuff, and unlimited capacity mags.

You have to have a shotgun for 5 it years before getting a rifle. I think the maximum magazine capacity is 10 rounds but there’s no real punishment for having mags over that. Pistols are more or less banned, some people have them for international competitions but have to store them in a range. Ian from forgotten weapons did a video on them, it’s worth a watch. I think there was something about being allowed 2 self defense weapons and some clause about being allowed smoothbore rifles.

Yep, we’ve had them for the past 2 or 3 days now and it’s lashing down now, no snow though.

It was like being in a sand blaster.

Hail being lashed down in 40mph+ winds. Wasn't snow or sleet.

"Good" news is the wind seems to have changed direction from East to Southerly. That usually means warmer weather so we might see temps climb a little over the coming days but who knows for how long.

Danish guy..."Russian survival"? Reckon a Molot Vepr 12 or Saiga 12 with 12 rounds of Russian slugs in a box mag would keep you from harm's way.
Without a doubt it isn't easy to own guns in Russia unless of course you are super rich and pay off the local police Kommisar to issue you permits aplenty in Moscow or whichever other Russian city you are living in. Which is just normal in Russia in day to day life. You are either super rich in Moscow or dirt poor, and there is almost zero middle class there and feck all social welfare.
Of course,if you are some poor old farmer living out in the middle of nowhere, Russia. Making about 100 euros a month. It is without a doubt a different story if you wanted a hanfgun for some reason.

Did you notice the Marakovs in the vid? They are basically the same as the live firing versions, bar that the barrel isn't drilled out! Take a WAG as to where our and the UK "hit kits" much favoured by UK and Irish criminals based on these are coming from? Also that NORINCO in China is making these too might explain as to why we have a bunch of state of the art handguns being used in hits here? They are made in China copies that can be dumped?
