I would say he has a great chance. Making decisions based on video replays are banned by the New York State Athletic Commission's rules. Since the ref ruled it as an illegal knee in real-time it's hard to see how they can make the case that Mousasi legally won the fight.

Mousasi awarded the fight because knees were legal!!

Weidman doesn't have much case, the ref made a boo boo, the confusion, video replay etc aside. It's more accurate to say that the ref didn't stop the fight he halted the action as he thought a foul was committed and the action never recommenced because a doctor said no. That's a loss all day long unfortunately.

Is there anything to stop a fighter stomping on the hands of the opponent when they do what Weidman was doing?
Also, the American Gangster had a great point that this rule is dumb because he couldn't protect himself ("Protect yourself at all times") because he was trying to put his hands on the ground

The grounded fighter rule only disallows knees and kicks to the head. There is nothing there preventing stomps to the hand. This would be a good way to combat someone putting their hands flat down like Weidman did. I imagine stomping someone's hand could have a good chance of breaking it.

I thought stomps of any kind to a downed opponent we illegal, no?

I've seen that posted a few times. But I can't find it listed anywhere. Dana said so is hardly proof. I'm pretty sure that it's allowed in Vegas for example.
And the ABCB/Unified rules voted to include it in Feb.

I'm not saying it is or isn't allowed in NYC btw. Just curious where the rule comes from.

NYSAC don't have formal documentation for MMA online yet, but the chairmen has said that they were not adopting the use of replays from the unified ACB ruleset.

    http://www.bloodyelbow.com/2017/2/7/14529254/abc-rules-committee-recommends-instant-replay-mma-news
Committee Chairman Sean Wheelock told Bloody Elbow that committee members wanted to make sure replay wouldn't disrupt the natural flow of a fight. So per the current recommendations, replay could not be used to restart a fight, to determine if a fighter tapped out, or to evaluate a possible low blow or any other fouls that don't bring an end to the fight.

I wasn't aware Vegas had ratified the use of replays yet, they haven't even adopted the new ACB unified ruleset yet?

I actually believe Weidman would have a case to get it ruled a no contest, even though I believe that would be the wrong choice.

I'm not sure, you could well be correct.

Doubt stomping on a padded gloved hand would do much anyway

you can stamp on the feet of a standing opponent ,

you can kick a downed opponents legs and knee their torso, not sure about hands but Im sure you can stamp on them

Really? I'd be surprised. Have neverseen it happening.

I'd say it absolutely would. Boxers wearing heavier gloves break their hands all the time. If you landed a stomp flush with the heel I'd say it'd break no bother.

I seen people raise that on other forums too. I honestly don't understand how that's a great point tbh. There's no reason why Weidman has to put his hands down. He has the option to protect his head or ground himself to try and protect himself. The rule doesn't force him to do anything

The grounded fighter rule only disallows knees and kicks to the head. There is nothing there preventing stomps to the hand.
That's incorrect. Stomping a grounded opponent is illegal
    18. Stomping of a grounded fighter

Stomping is considered any type of striking action with the feet where the fighter lifts their leg up bending their leg at the knee and initiating a striking action with the bottom of their foot or heel . (Note) Axe kicks are not stomps. Standing foot stops are NOT a foul. As such, this foul does not include stomping the feet of a standing fighter.

It could definitely break the fingers.
The back of the hand is padded, the fingers and front of the knuckles aren't

The ABCB vote was only to include it in this year's conference, so it won't be officially added to the rules until July. I think that's the article I had read previously.

That's a quote from the ABCB chairman not NYSAC, right?
If can't be used to check action during the fight, only used to verify a fight ending sequence. So in this case it could be used I believe.

That article mentions that it's used in Nevada.
Instant replay is currently available in Nevada, but the committee’s recommendation, if adopted by the ABC, would make its availability much more widespread and hopefully standardize the manner in which it could be used.

Herb Dean did a good interview with Luke Thomas tonight.

    In short:

Firstly, Big Dan is allowed to ask Big John if it was a foul or legal blow and Big John is allowed to inform him if he has a better opinion on the incident (even via replay or seeing it on the big screen). If John didn't see it then he can ask the next official cageside.

Secondly, Dean clarified that fighters do not have 5 minutes to recover from a head strike and it's not their decision anyway. They have "up to 5 minutes" but it's at the complete discretion of the ref + doctor. That's purely because if the doctor feels a fighter is injured/concussed they are not going to wait the full 5 mins, they can call it off any time they want to in order to get them medical attention quicker.

In short, Weidman's appeal is going nowhere. He was clearly about to lose the fight and tried to engineer a DQ win by playing possum (claiming it was February and not knowing what day it was). It backfired and now he's stuck with that loss.

Crazy how quickly MMA changes. 18 months ago Weidman and Wonderboy were both at (or near) the top of the game. Now they have a combined 4 losses and 1 draw from their last 5 fights and it's hard to know where either of them go next. Weidman surely has Mousasi, Jacare, Romero and Rockhold ahead of him in pecking order now and GSP is already at the top of that queue. Wonderboy isn't getting a 3rd crack at Woodley ever, he's already behind Maia/Masvidal and potentially behind Lawler and Condit if they return with wins.

Wonderboy will need about 5 or 6 wins to get back into contention, he was very disappointing in both title fights. Maia/Masvidal, GSP, McGregor, Lawler, Cowboy if he goes on another run, basically anyone in the top 6/7 who has a winning recent record will all be ahead of him for the time being I'd imagine.

I wish he'd fight Gunnar because I think Gunnar would win at the moment and it would shoot him up the rankings. I also think Wonderboy is lucky enough Lawler is fighting Cowboy instead. Wonderboy needs a fight where he won't be afraid to get countered to allow him to get some confidence back i feel.

Cowboy ahead of Wonderboy? No chance.

Cowboy is a fan favourite and even though he looked bad against Masvidal, he would be right back on track with a win over Lawler. Cowboy is inconsistent but his fights are generally exciting either way. Wonderboy needs a few good fights and maybe a couple of finishes to show he's worthy of a title shot again, in my opinion. And I would think the UFC have the same opinion

Cowboy is anything but inconsistent hes lost 2 fights in about 4 years and fights every few months, will agree he ****s the bed when theres a title or title shot on the line he can mentally break.

Some sources saying he said it was Tuesday! A UFC PPV on a Tuesday?? He deserved his way out with those answers he was unfit to continue or he failed in trying to manufacture a D.Q. victory. The fight is awarded to the man able to fight on.

Weidman's camps sole argument is that the ref should have had no access to video "Stick to your F'n decision man" the words of Longo, the NYSAC have now put out a statement saying video replay was available for consultation...

    ...Case closed.

There was audio for the corner of Weidman but it's been taken down. Transcripts are available though...

Serra: If your okay, you've got to let them know! He never knows what day it is, though!
    Longo: F**king bulls**t. Bull f**king s**t! No, no, no!
Serra: Because he didn't know what day it is? He might not know what day it is! Give me his s**t. Where's his shirt?
Longo: Goddamn it! He was winning that fight, too.
Serra: He told them it was February and he didn't know what the date was. I told you that motherf**kers a dirty cocks**ker!
Referee Dan Miragliotta: (to Weidmans corner) They watched the replay, it was legal.
    Serra: Was it legal?
Weidman: There's no way that was legal!
Serra: Come on Dan, are you kidding Dan? How is that legal?
    Longo: Motherf**ker!

Video replays are legal in New York, same as New Jersey, as per NYSAC statement.
