Quite enjoying the Switch which is my first console in a long time, but I find Wi-Fi reception to be fairly poor. Even in the same room as the Wi-Fi access point and just 2 meters away from it, the console alternates between full signal and two bars, and only gets 24Mpbs DL in the built-in speed test tool. And in the room next door (separated but a fairly light, non load bearing wall) it's just one bar or very week signal. All my other portable devices get consistent full signal across all these locations and have no problem maxing out my 120Mpbs broadband in the scenario where the Switch gets 24Mbps.

    How is everyone's Wi-Fi working?

Everything's been fine for me Wi-Fi-wise, besides that downtime on Christmas Day.

Of your router can output at 5.0ghz signal too use thar

Mines a launch day switch. It's WiFi performance is crap. I've 6/7 year old laptops that perform better.

Admittedly, I've an old enough router that only has a 2.4ghz signal so an upgrade to that could help me. But still, every other device manages fine on that router bar the switch.

Cheers. Actually my router is broadcasting 2 different SSIDs for 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz, and the Switch only sees the 2.4Ghz one. All other devices who support 5Ghz do see the other SSID as well.

Wondering if there is a fault or some compatibility issue between the console and my router :-s

Thanks, that's kind of my experience, but adding to that my router does broadcast at 5Ghz as well which the Switch isn't able to pick-up whereas my phone and tablet have not problem with it :-s I might try to channel the 5Ghz channel as well.

I had initial issues but it was a WiFi router problem rather than a Switch one, my brother did a rejig of the Wiffy and there's no connection problems at all now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,886 ✭✭✭✭Bob24

OK my router was auto selecting channel 149 for 5Ghz and after forcing it to channel 44 the Switch is now seeing the network (I guess they are restricting it to certain channels which seems a bit stupid as if you want to connect to networks outside of home whereby you can't change the channel there is no solution). It is not as fast as the protocol would allow (35Mbps just next to the router) but there is stronger and more steady signal than I had on 2.4Ghz and that is essentially just what I wanted. Thanks for putting me on the right track! (and Nintendo's 2.4Ghz implementation seems pretty crap indeed - I do get stronger reception with 5Ghz in the room next door to the router which shouldn't be the case).

Having read the last few pages of this thread Im sold.Picking one up on Friday .Ive a PS4 sitting here gathering dust so its being traded in against a switch--local shop is giving me 250 for the ps4,extra controller and games against a new switch so it seems like a good deal. The xbox one is my go to now that kodi is on it-I think the switch will compliment the xbox to be completely honest.

Any recommendations on what game I should pick up first as I can really only afford the console + one game for the minute??Is a 32gb card enough for a few weeks?

BoTW for sure if you can only afford one.

I'm 9 months in and still no SD card, unless you want WWE 2k, LA Noire and the other 2k outcomes, it's not essential at the start, if you can take Mario Oddessy or even Golf Story or Stardew Valley instead of an SD card, do it

I'd buy a second game quicker than I'd buy an SD card!!

32GB is plenty to get going. Buying an SD card while only having one game is a complete waste.

I might give it a try later but I am not too attracted to botw myself as I prefer something with more focus that completely open.

So I’d say Super Mario Odyssey if you’re like me although the dominant opinion is that botw is the best game on the platform.

But also while the two games mentioned above are recognised by most as the best 2 on the Switch, it depends a bit on what you want. Depending on whether you want long engaging single player gaming sessions or short and fun online multiplayer ones you might not want to buy the same game (in the second case you might enjoy Mario Kart or Splatoon better)

And yeah as others have said even if you go digital no need for a SD card for just one game aside from a few exceptions. If you are buying on cartridges it is even less needed.
I have 3 games purchased digitally and still fine without a card.

Checked with Nintendo Support this morning, and was told Switch Online is going to be required on each account that wants to play online.

No feature sharing like the other consoles.

That sucks. At least it's 1/3 of the annual fee that PS+ and XBL carry. Though we probably won't get free modern games every month, and only old ones with online functionality.

Tried to return my faulty Switch today and was told to contact Nintendo. I told the guy it wasn't Nintendo it was bought from and he fobbed me off saying it wasn't their (Smyths) problem as they didn't buy it faulty from Nintendo. Well actually, they obviously did as it isn't working. I had it for 2 days before it conked out. Told me to get a reference number from Ninty customer support and when I do to bring it back to Smyths and they'll process a return then. I shouldn't have to do any of this but I was told it's policy. Obviously a load of bull**** and they know it as well but I was getting nowhere with the guy. Their customer support is genuinely atrocious.

Anyway, from what little use I had of the Switch it's a brilliant system. The on the go nature of the system is incredible and changes hw you can play games. Someone else wants to use the TV? No problem, I'll undock it and play it on the sofa.

I wonder how this will affect us buying games from different regions.

It's a bit of a ****e move from Ninty imo but for the price I guess it's not too bad if there's only a pair of you.

Me nor the co-pilot will be playing online so hopefully the older games cross accounts, wouldn't have any issue in that case.

I have it at €30 in my head, Xbox Live subs can be gotten for €30-40 so it's really not great in comparison to that

Do we have an official € price?

Official price for Xbox Live is nearer 60 euro. So who knows, maybe we'll be able to source the Nintendo online dodat cheaper too.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

It's €19.99 per year. Says so on their site.

I would rather wait and see what's officially announced, I've a feeling that as long as the primary account on the Switch is set for online play the others will be able to use it, otherwise it'll get messy.

Didn't know you could get bog standard live anymore, apologies, I meant live gold.

I think he means the Switch Online service. That has been announced as €19.99 a year.

Again, all complete nonsense. No store 'policy' supersedes your statutory rights, those rights trump any policy, in law. You won't get satisfaction dealing with a staff member, even a manager, I would think. Best thing to do is, as I said earlier, get a registered letter off to Smyths Head Office, detailing the issue, stating your rights as a consumer to a replacement directly from Smyths, stating your contract of sale is with Smyths, not Nintendo, and mentioning the Sale of Goods & Supply of Services Act of 1980, and concluding with mention of the small claims court should you not receive a reply within whatever you feel is a fair turnaround of time.

The above WILL work, but, you need to ask yourself, is it worth the additional hassle. Perhaps is IS easier to deal with Nintendo on it? That's your call, though if it were me I'd have to call them out on bs policies that have zero weight in law. I bought a Switch there recently, and was told of a similar bs warranty policy...I asked the question of those in the know - https://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=105521458

    Hey Hellrazer,
What company is giving you that deal if you don't mind me asking? Long time lurker here and I can't hold off anymore! I need a SWITCH!

I've a PS4 that might as well be a paper weight so looking to trade in!

This is helpful, thanks. The thing is though I tried to argue with the guy but he wouldn't listen. Just referred to the policy again and why it was on me to contact Nintendo. I'm pretty sure I'd get the same reply if I spoke to a manager. It's an interesting way to train staff and no doubt it's a widespread practice in the retail industry.

I'm waiting to hear back from Nintendo. If I don't get a response by Thursday I'll go back to Smyth's and if they try to bull**** me again I'll escalate. Head office is probably the way to go. I've not been treated fairly by staff. Plus I've no desire to deal with Nintendo.

The only way at this stage I would think. The staff & manager are likely towing the line they've been trained/told to tow...so you've more than likely reached a local impasse. A registered letter to Head Office is probably going to be the only escalation of worth. You've tried twice now in-store, personally, I wouldn't try again.

I'll give it one more try with the Nintendo reference in tow. If I'm fobbed off again head office will.be the next port of call.

    Thanks for the advice.
