All that queuing may have been worth it if it was good inside, but it's not. There's no new games that I can see, it's the same usual line up of games to play, a retro zone, and queues for queues. Delighted I've no interest in meeting the youtubers, because there's a massive queue for that.

There's 3 stalls to get food with massive queues for them, the auditorium has a queue to get into it, but hell knows what's going on in there because information is not displayed and the app is unresponsive for the majority of the time.

I get the feeling that the organisers are not gamers themselves, and they organised it just for the money, because they definitely over sold tickets, and there's little for gamers here unless you fancy spending money to go play games you be probably already played.

The Cosplay here is great though, people have put serious effort in.

Edit: those terms to cover themselves, they're basically admitting to selling too many tickets. If they only sold the max amount they could, there should be no reason everyone couldn't get in. One security guard said to us that the "morning" crowd didn't leave when they expected, as if there were timeframes for people to leave... In fairness, he was been sent by the organiser bexause, yet again, the organiser is too scared to speak her/himself.

Almost 2.5 hours in the queue and we left. We were in the final strait but there was no shelter, so getting pelted in the face with rain got too much.

Was there at 9:10 this morning with VIP ticket eventually got in at 10:00 what a waste of time, my 9 year old said to me this is boring and wanted to leave what a waste of money and time. left at 11ish the place was like a tin of sardines and walked out to see a massive queue. as comic book man would say worst convention ever!

Hope your 10 year old wasn't too disappointed.

I so predicted this mess last year - https://twitter.com/TheChrisDGaming/status/781520474526380032

Although to be fair, at least GamerCon actually got to start the event. But this still further taints the image of gaming-oriented conventions in this country. Hopefully people disappointed by today will still give other events like QCon and Insomnia a shot.

Seems they've now added a new section to the Ts&Cs to try and cover their asses.

    "Access is therefore not guaranteed..."

    Wow...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,114 ✭✭✭ebbsy

What sounds worse than not getting in is the apparent lack of attractions inside ?

As a gamer I'm embarrassed and shocked of the treatment Gamer-Con has given to everyone. I hope this doesnt stain true conventions and exhibitions from setting up over here.

RTE have picked this up, 3rd headline down on the front of news...

We had planned to head to it tomorrow. The young man wanted to go for his confirmation, however after seeing all this, I'm not prepared to risk travelling all the way from Limerick to be turned away.
He's disgusted at it, and even at his age, he's calling it a scam!

I'm assuming that due to the massive f-up, we should be able to get a refund??

Only confirmed for Saturday at the moment.

I've sent in a refund request anyway, I'm not spending all that time and money travelling all the way up to risk being turned away.

    What a joke:mad:

Got there at 11:15 and got in close to 13:00. I got close to the door after twenty minutes and after that nothing for the next hour. I only got updates via Twitter and disgusted people leaving the queue.

Once inside there were queues to play any game. There was no supervision there though so you just grabbed what you could.
There was also then no supervision in the "mature games" area despite it saying people would be IDed.

Far worse though was that a number of the consoles were missing controllers - I'm guessing they were stolen since it'd be easy to. And not only that on a number of consoles some ***hole had gone and deleted the installed games meaning they were effectively useless (no way were the games going to download during the day).

Have tickets for tomorrow, refund or not no way I'm wasting out time showing up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,350 ✭✭✭✭super_furry

The whole thing always seemed like a cowboy money-making, scheme to me anyway. All about selling tickets and getting the GameStop branding out there and not much else.

    http://www.rte.ie/news/technology/2017/0318/860761-gamercon-dublin-lines/

This in particular is damning - "The Convention Centre has capacity for 9,400 people and around 12,000 tickets were sold for each day of the event which runs today and tomorrow."

Get the money and **** the punters.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,350 ✭✭✭✭super_furry

They have a refund page here https://gamer-con.com/tickets/ now. The line "WE WILL PROCESS YOUR REFUND ONCE THE EVENT HAS BEEN COMPLETED NEXT WEEK." would worry me though.

If you've paid by credit card, I'd say do a charge back now because I wouldn't have any faith in their refund process.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators, Regional North East Moderators Posts: 10,883 Mod ✭✭✭✭PauloMN

Easily one of the worst events I have ever been to. Pure unadulterated greed is what caused a lot of the problems today.

Long queues for everything in there also. No organisation anywhere, nobody monitoring how long kids were on consoles for. Nobody telling you what queue was for what. My son and his pal got nothing out of it and we left early.

Complete and utterly waste of money and we'll never be back. If anyone has bought tickets for tomorrow I would only suggest going if you are there first thing in the morning when they open the doors, but knowing what I now know I'd not even bother.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,191 ✭✭✭uncle_sam_ie

Went up early from Cork with my son and got in straight away but we were bored to tears. This was a Christmas gift and I promised I'd make it up to him. Get your money back if you can.

heard they made a complete balls of it.

Feel sorry for any families stuck out in the rain for hours. Get a refund and compensation if you were turned away!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 62 ✭✭drawnacrol

This will be all over the news tonight and papers on Monday. What a joke. Refunds don't get people's time and travel expenses back so I'm sure this is the last we will hear of GamerCon coming back.

Thats ridiculous. I went to ComicCon and that was like a zoo but after 2 or 3 it emptied enough that you could easily walk around and browse stalls/stands.

This was not worth the price of the ticket.
I got there at about 9ish this morning as I was meeting a friend. Saw the Queue and thought it wasnt too bad since I was there early but as I was about to get into it we were told to head around the othe side of the Convention Center as thats where it started so we did.
We go around and it was like it was zigzagging around the buildings but we only stayed in the queue for about 20 minutes before we go in.
My friend had a booking with the VR Play at 9:30 so he made it in time, I went to play some games in the Game Zone, played Titanfall 2 for a bit then went back to meet my mate.

When we went back to the Game zone to play some more games, some of the Xbox and Playstations didnt have a controller, i dont know if this was because people took them for 2 player games or they were just nicked.
Then queued up for an hour to try the HTV Vice which was just watching some fish while on a ship under water. Not that great.
I know this was their first event but it could have been organised a little better. Some of us got in before the VIP ticket holders, we were next to each other in the queue just seperated by railings and we were let in in batches.

Well everyone what did we you all think of gamercon? Had a great day up there. Heard a few people were stuck in que for a while. I walked straight up to the front door and got in. Had a great day with the VR, didn't even pre book it and got 45 minutes playing it. Cosplays were brilliant. I went as Kasumi from Dead or Alive Beach Volleyball. My only gripe would be that it was a bit overcrowded but all in all a great day was had. Can't wait for next year. GAMERCON!

Any further details of the floor layout / games / events? How did you manage to get a go of the PSVR without pre-booking?

My Columbo-sense is tingling...."Just one more question!"

Their website is now displaying an 'account suspended' message :o

Even without the delays, this thing always sounded vaguely miserable to me (marketing fest + YouTubers - basically, I'm not the target audience here). But one strange thing I noticed from the few pictures I've seen inside the place was that all the games seemed to be already out? Maybe there were previews and the like elsewhere, but saw prominent Forza Horizon 3 and Gears of War 4 stands in pictures. The bare minimum I'd expect from an event of this ilk would be some sort of exclusivity!

Floor layout? Did you attend yourself? I just walked straight up and put the headset on. People were complaining after about half an hour that I was on the vr too long but I'd paid to be there so wanted to get my value out of it. There was no staff to monitor who was playing what or how long they were playing.

Saw that account suspended page meself, thought it was a problem on my end.

I was thinking same about the lack of new releases. Surely there must have been some promotions. Otherwise, why not just sit at home playing? Would have been more comfortable for sure. I do feel sorry for everyone who ended up disappointed today. Telling people who didn't get in today to come tomorrow is a bit stupid too isn't it? Won't that just make tomorrow an even bigger disaster if they similarly sold too many tickets.

    Don't answer a question with a question. Purposely misleading. It's politicking 101.

Oh... You're one of "them". You paid to be on it, but never booked a timeslot in which other people did. If people were complaining why didn't you get off it or look for staff?

I did look for staff but found it difficult to see anyone with the headset on.

Glad I read this thread, I had plans to bring my son along but this whole event looks like a pitiful disaster and a blatant cash grab.
Poor organisation, no supervision, a-holes making themselves at home, lifting controllers, deleting games and ignoring rules.
Much of it would be tolerable if there were new games to be played, but no.
Over the years, mid 90s to mid 00s I was at a bunch of promo nights and events run by the likes of Sony, MS and even Sega and they were all a blast,.
And the likes of the Comic Con are run here and are successful enough, so what happened here?

Just made the RTÉ 9pm news there. Tomorrow looks to be the same situation all over again, another 12k tickets sold for a venue holding 9k people.

Get there for opening or don't bother would be my advice. In fact, don't bother at all and just get yourself a game in Smyths or something instead.

Had a great day there today.

Arrived about 10 am had the VIP tickets so was grand, Skipped the queue at the first line then you went into the main one at the top, about 5 mins there and brought to the lane just around the corner and straight in. 10 mins max in the queue.

Went straight up to the Auditorium so the little ones could see little kelly and carley. No wait just straight in.

Went down to the meet and greet where you only got to meet One youtuber which was a bummer as they are a pair really. Got in the queue for that about 15 mins before and was straight in.

Retro section was cool, Arcade machines, about 50 consoles some counter strike source. No big queues for that you just stood behind the one you wanted to play and jumped on. Same with the games to the left at the gamerzone.

Booked the VR in advance so got on in the time slot.

Went off about 1 to rockets across the road for lunch when we came back in there was some crowd alright.

The things like the Playstation VR, Razer Bus were packed, And the queue for the Gamstop checkouts was a nightmare.

I guess they hoped that one crowd would get in at the start of the day and be gone then the next half later in the day but obviously didn't happen.

I planned the day checked the times and had a great day with the kids anyway.

I feel bad for people that didn't get in,

For the people that did get in some of them really have no patience, loads of moany bastards who just expect to walk in and jump on everything straight away. Cursing all over the shop being rude to everyone, pushing you and all. Madness.

It's like Disneyland, You want on the rides then you have to queue.

I think the fact it made the national news speaks for itself on how well organized it was the exception here seems to be the folks who had a good time the rule was a poor time.

It's a sham - Knew it would be a fiasco. The fact they had no real game developer guests aroused my suspicion. I asked them why and they told me, "well, maybe next year, we want to be mainstream this year!". THere's nothing more mianstream than the designers of some of the biggest entertainment properties. Other Irish cons here have gotten John Romero and Rhianna Pratchett!

They desperately needed more staff on site. There was no proper system for getting on to play any of the games and, as I mentioned above, nobody even supervising if kids were playing age-appropriate games (as they advertised there would be). It was too much of a free-for-all and that just doesn't work in an open plan like they had.
I think having someone monitor the games would have worked a lot better. The process would have been a lot smoother. It'd also have stopped people nicking controllers or deleting games. The fact that people had been queuing for hours outside meant they were probably far less patient than they might have been otherwise and acted up.

For myself, I only played a game if I saw a free slot and never stuck at them for long. If nothing else, I learnt that 'Gears of War' isn't a series I'm interested in...

Could have been better alright, I only went for the retro stuff myself and there was a guy looking after that all day. He was there in the morning and still there when we left, If you were hogging he was over getting the next people on, Maybe if they had that at each section then it would have been better. Also maybe some barriers for the queues would have helped

But still too many entitled arseholes there also.

As it's the first one they have done on that scale here hopefully they do it again next year and learn from the first years mistakes.

Complete disaster. Finally got in after an hour queuing, but left after 20 minutes. No information, no staff, far too many people, couldn't get near any games. Not allowed upstairs because it was "too full". No information anywhere. Feel sorry for people with kids outside who think they might be missing something. Those who saw the queues and went home straight away had the right idea.

I travelled from Cork with a teenager, left @ 7am, arrived to the centre around 10.30am and was inside around 11.20ish. To say that this was run in an amateurish way is being generous. Walking down the quay saw a large q and was peed off, only to discover that was not 25% of the q and had to walk further down passed the centre and around the block. Only 1 side entrance used for entry - such stupidity
Escalators broke down but to be fair were fixed after about 5 mins. Even when working they became a bottleneck as for some reason they decided to stop people using the stairs. As mentioned above the food is basic, overpriced and crap and you will have to q for the privilege.
As for the offerings - Christ where do I start. Overpriced merchandise - €20 for a t-shirt, some farmer's market type stalls and someone scoured the storage shelves at gamestop - you'd be better off going into the shop - less hassle. I think they were putting a nice profit margin on their offerings - a GOT board game €60, no thanks - but they have a captive audience and it's like shooting fish in a barrel. As a PC gamer the only keyboard I could see to buy was €200!
A lot of kids were playing FPS games, some if not all are most likely over 18s, in some cases unsupervised in most cases, not. I have to hold my hands up and say I have been guilty of it myself, but never in public and not with children who were so young. I couldn't believe that they were selling Pornhub Tshirts - nothing graphical, just the name, but you know kids and curiosity ..... and everyone has access to a smartphone these days. I saw an adult deliberately take a picture of it - couldn't miss it, it was hanging up front and centre and maybe on Monday this will be mentioned on Joe D.
Also they had some You tubers have a sit down, Q&A session in front of an audience of a few thousand, mostly kids. I didn't know these people but they showed a vid and there was some bad language. Again I am guilty of this particularly playing games, but they should know their audience and tailor their routine. Mostly kids were asking the questions and imo they were a bit dismissive of the kids.

There was nothing there to make someone excited about being there, at least me and probably the majority of people that have or will attend. When you break it down what it is (not including the negatives mentioned above as I'm not repeating them and my fingers hurt )

    a few Youtubers
one room to play a few games - long waiting times
mediocre merchandise that you can buy there as opposed to ordering on line (at probably a cheaper price )

I expected to see some big hardware manufacturers and some of the big game developers, but there was no one. Remember that sponsors like these contribute to the running costs (and profit) of events and this extra revenue could have resulted in better amenities and a better customer experience for all. Instead they didn't appear and to an extent this is a worry - maybe they knew what the audience would be - mainly console users or they were presented with what the event would be like.... and ran a mile. My money is on the latter.

We left after 2 hours as both of us were bored. When you consider it was a 6 hour round trip, that'll give you some perspective as to how peed off I am.

Unless you have your travel paid for or cannot disappoint kids, I would give this a miss and get a refund. If it is a surprise for them and they don't know about it - DON'T GO.

GAMERCON!

Genuinely curious. Apparently most people found themselves bored with nothing to do. Outside of VR, what was so amazing?

Have tickets for tomorrow but not a snowballs chance in hell I would go to that shambles.......they should be heavily fined for this.

I went today and it was crazy. Definitely wouldn't be back.

One thing I will say is you might not get a refund. It said non scanned saturdays tickets and afaik made no mention of Sunday tickets being refunded.
