Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Irish 3/4 Marathon (Formerly Athlone 3/4) Sun 9th Oct 2016

The 3/4 Marathon is being held on the quiet country roads near Longwood in south Meath this year.
    RACE WEBSITE HERE

    You can expect:-

    Well organised event
Properly measured, marked and marshaled course
    1/4 marathon split timing,
Distance markers in Km and Miles,
4 on course & 1 finish line water/ food stations
    Post race showers
    Post race massage
    Pacers
Race top that you will hopefully value and use again
Personalised race numbers for those entering before 25th Sept
    Convenient free car parking
    Positive race experience
Transparent pricing with no "extras" at checkout

Whilst the scenery or catering options might not be quite as good as our former Glasson golf hotel base which we have outgrown, the route will be flatter as requested by many as the climb is exactly 3/4 that of DCM :D

We again advise that the event be used as a preparation one with conservative pacing not flat out racing if doing DCM 3 weeks later.

Will be great to have you back again tang1.

Assigned position not likely to be as convenient to your house as last year but will be plenty of action to watch we hope.

Will be in touch in September and in interim let me know who your lucky buddy that wants a free entry is thanks

Did Athlone last year. Great other than the hills at the end! Looking forward to a flatter course nearer Dublin ;)

Looks good, dunno about running it but could do a bike marshall if that's any help.

Curious about this. If people are running DCM 3 weeks later I presume they run this slower ? If so, by what margin ?

Depends on how it fits into your plan. Lots of plans would have a 30km LSR scheduled 3 weeks out from Dublin, so it's just another training run. Other plans would have a marathon pace section included.

    Last year, I went for:
    • First third (quarter-marathon) at MP + 20s
    • Second third at MP + 10s
    • Last third at MP
Worked pretty well. I definitely wouldn't race it, or even do all of it at MP

I was thinking of using the event as a session 3x5m @ MP (or 4x4m etc)

I ran it 3 years ago, all at MP, was chuffed with myself and felt very confident on DCM day. Didn't hit my target on the day, hard to say if it was entirely due to this but I definitely wouldn't race it again as EVERYONE suggests above and everyone suggested 3 years ago :)

Even the pacers for sub X, race at x pace +

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,030 ✭✭✭opus

Going to miss it this year cause of the Chicago marathon, I actually liked the old route, that nice hill towards the finish taught me a bit about proper pacing after having to walk up parts of it my first year running it :o

So, just to be clear, if targetting a 4 hour DCM, the LSR would be around the 10 minute per mile pace..is that the pace the Sub 4 pacer would be running in this race? That sounds fantastic if it's the case.

I'm about to sign up...this will be the clincher :-)

    From http://irish3quartermarathon.ie/faq/

    4:00 Marathon Pace Group: Planned 3:10 for 3/4 Marathon = approx. 6:00/km = approx. 9:40/mile

(standard pacer advice applies here though - they're great to have available and you could well use them as an aid, but ultimately you're responsible for your own pace)

I'm doing this too - planning some sort of session for this.
Has your coach any ideas/plans on how to run this one?

Looking to sign myself and the Mrs up for this one - any boardsie discount codes being offered by the organisers (who I think are boards users)?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,029 ✭✭✭Extrasupervery

I'm interested in this too...sounds a lot better than the three laps of Phoenix Park required to get 20 miles in. I'll be finishing somewhere around the 4 hour mark...maybe a little later. Will there still be showers available then? I often come in as facilities are shutting down (yay being a slowpoke) so I thought I'd ask.

Thinking of doing this as my lr before the DCM and discount codes out there for this?

I just filled out the registration form there now. In the discount box I gambled and typed in the word "boards" and it gave me €5 off the price.

Good job on that gamble AAD - Set it up a while back but forgot to post it here !

Showers will hopefully still be warm but no guarantees on that one Extrasupervery - Aren't the cold shower / ice bath better for post race / training recovery anyways :-)?

Generally recommended not to race this event at MP if doing DCM
    Extra info here http://irish3quartermarathon.ie/marathon-training/

We are well ahead of last year's entry levels and expect to sell out a couple of weeks early so get entered now if planning to do it thanks

Expecting a sell out, quick get it on the national airwaves, out to clubs, a letter in everybody's door. You don't want it to be all your fault when people miss the race. 😂😂

If anybody is looking for a free entry, I have one. I registered way back in April but I'm a non-runner unfortunately - I really enjoyed the race last year so was really looking forward to it. Transfers are available until September 25th so I can transfer the number into someones name.

Can I transfer my number if I can’t run?
YES – We will take entry transfers (1 per entry) up until 25th September 2016
Please e-mail any transfer requests to info@outfront.ie before 25th September
On 26th September we will order our personalised race numbers so transfer requests must be received prior to that date
No deferrals to subsequent events are possible

Everyone all set for Sunday ?
Weather looks to be ok for it.

I am curious to find out how I get one, this will be the longest distance I have ever ran in my life by 2km when I complete it (hopefully)
Part of my building up to the Dublin city marathon, its getting real now !

Best of luck to everyone taking part.

I was trying to get a late entry to this race but was not successful :( .

I am based in South Dublin and thinking of doing the Ferns HM tomorrow if nothing comes back from the 3/4 race organisers, does anyone know if you can register for the Ferns HM on the morning of the race as I can't seem to enter on line. I tried the mobile number on the site but no reply so far??

BTW, I normally enter races in plenty of time, but for family reasons I couldn't commit to races this summer.

Best of luck to any Boardies doing the 3/4 tomorrow!!

Looking forward to this tomorrow. Plan has me down for final 20 miler... So hoping my garmin measures the course long;)

You could do 0.34 of a mile jog as a warm up if you really want to make up the distance :)

Quick question regarding the pacers. I have always understood that a long slow run should be run somewhere around 1 min per mile slower than your target pace for a marathon. According to the race pack that was sent out the other day, the pacer for people targeting 3:30 for the marathon will be going at around 8:30min per mile pace. The pace for 3:30 is 8 min per mile, so the pacer for the race tomorrow is a bit quick, no? Pace should be closer to 9 min per mile. Am I being an idiot here (possible)?

well by way of example, I'll be pacing the 3 hr target guys. We'll be going at 4:30 min/kilometer pace. Thats about 15s slower than MP. Save your race pace for the day or if you feel strong in the closing stages up it to race pace then.

Out of curiosity SJ, why 15 seconds slower than MP, is that advisable for anyone running Dublin in 3 weeks?

Well done to the organisers on this one. Really enjoyed the route. Undulating with the odd small climb/descent. ideal weather conditions, massive spread both during and after race of fruit, cake, tayto sandwiches, sweets, tea/coffee. All greatly appreciated. Water in bottles and cups! Now officially the taper can begin. Will definitely run this one again.

First time doing this race and was very impressed. I liked the course although that climb on 17 miles was a bit nasty and it was a perfect morning for running. Now it's taper time. When will the official times be released?

Thanks to all for the positive feedback after today's race.
As always with a new venue we learned some ways to do things a bit differently but event went very well in general and we think the 3/4 M definitely has found it's new home

Just in at dusk after sweeping the signs off the course and Fair Dues to the vast majority of participants who disposed of bottles and gel packets intelligently (at bins / Km/ Mile signs or marshals) so we could have an efficient clean up which is vital to ensure local community support

Results have been on Red Tag since this afternoon
    http://www.redtagtiming.com/results/Irish3QuarterMarathon2016.xls
    Any timing queries to info@redtagtiming.com

Great job from the pacers too I hear so thanks to some boardies who were involved and best of luck to all in DCM

Mr Stew and I had a super bunch in the 4 hour group and we really enjoyed today. The new route is super and what an absolute gift of a day weather-wise.
Tayto sandwiches and cup of tea were YUM!
Well done to all who ran and extra special thanks to Excuseless and his wonderful crew today.
It was great to catch up briefly with lots of boardsies before the run today, I hope it went great for all.

    Roll on Dublin:D

Bravo to Excuseless and his crew, made my job very easy. Marshals were excellent and vocal with there support to runners, how a race should be ran.

Superb event today - very well organised.

Sooooo many positives today that have been said already here & on FB - the Crisp sambos' were a masterstroke at the end.

My only gripe was the start - I was corralled into a car park and then noticed the race had started with my pace group well ahead of me. A small thing to rectify next year, but that aside - it was a suberbly organised event - loved the on-course treats and the signage was 1st class - never a doubt where I was going.
    Nice finishing chute too.

Well done to all volunteers - young and old - this has the makings of a fantastic event.

That was the best race I've ever taken part in even though I wasn't as fit as I'd like to have been for it.

    1, 5 euro off being on boards.ie
2, Great location for parking and plenty of it for hundreds more
3, Lovely fit and colour t-shirt - love the 'eyeball the wall' on the back of it
4, Really well organised staff at registration
5, Queue was grand indoors for toilet, loads of T-roll as well
6, Really nice community out on the course with loads of encouragement
7, Small bottles with lids and segments of fruit meant I didnt have to bother with second gel.
8, Well thought out last 7km which gave those doing the marathon a good practive session
9, Great finish with lots support
10, Easy to get back out of village and onto main road

    Negatives
1, My own fault - missed my turn which added 17km to my trip
2, The gun went off and some people were still inside the front yard waiting area
3, Race started a bit late but thats very understandable for a new race
4, Were 3.40 pacers missing? I was going to use them to go at LSR pace but was glad I didn't in the end.

I can only compare the generosity and value for money with probably Raheny 5 miler. Really outstanding.
