If say he's 165 in the cage when he fights at FW I don't think he's much heavier fighting Diaz. The difference is he's carrying a bit extra body fat, some more water weight and maybe a small bit extra muscle (honestly he doesn't look much bigger to me, ~5lbs maybe)

I certainly don't think he aimed to get much bigger for his fight at 170 with a strength and conditioning program geared towards adding mass, similar to what Kell Brook did. He just didn't have to diet, but he was still training the same amount.

For someone who has probably not been heavier than 172 out of camp in their whole life, even eating everything around them during camp probably won't go higher than that IMO.

A lean 165lbs post-cut and a ~170 with no cut are surely completely different?

So Conor says he walks around at about 170. That doesn't mean his peak condition is at 170. It's probably a bit leaner than that. He wouldn't start his cut to 145 from that, first he'd lose some fat and weigh 160-165 before the cut, and try get back up to that as soon as he weighs in.
Yeah sure that are different. But that backs up my point. Walking around at 170, dieting to 165, then cutting makes perfect sense to me.
Being a 167lb Fat Belly doesn't fit with that imo.
Against Diaz he tried to get the same leanness as he would have pre-cut to 145 but at 170 lbs which he found difficult. Was I reading he had a small weight cut this time around? So he could have been 175, a weight at which he really finds tough to be lean, and then did a small cut to 168lbs. In ring weight he was probably slightly heavier than 170.
That's pretty much what I was suggesting. That there was a small cut to 168 as you describe. Maybe not even as high as 175.

I agree. It's a small amount of extra fat and muscle.
I just saying that it was more than the quoted 2lbs extra, not that it was 185lbs or anything.

I'd expect him to be the same size and leaner verses Alvarez.

    ^ Interesting.
Alvarez himself is still after a fight with Conor. Tweeted about it only couple of hours ago.

Looks 100% like its Eddie vs Khabib.
Either Mcgregor is fighting Aldo or (most likely) not at 205 :(

Alvarez is silly for not sitting out and campaigning for the McGregor fight. If he loses to Khabib any chance of a big pay day is finished for him for the foreseeable future.

Fighting khabib doesn't pay the bills though. Eddie is 33 in a few months and has had loads of fights, be a shame if he never got a decent payday.

It shouldnt be up to McGregor to get him a decent payday while hes champ he should get a good managment team.

MMA is not the sport of getting paid.

This. While its nice to see a man getting a pay day a champ shouldnt be focusing on money fights. A champ should be focusing on beating the living daylights out of top ranked guys in his division and proving he didnt just get lucky wining that belt but that he deserves to wear it.

Maybe thats just me and im a bit old fashioned.

Why are fans so worried about fighters getting he big pay day.

I agree the lower levels are being screwed and hopefully they can get a bigger slice of the pie but i dont care about draws and paydaya. I like good matchups

Exactly. Too many mini Conor's want to talk about cash and PPV, I want to see the best fights.

That said, I think Alvarez v Conor could be a cracking fight.

Because why in the name of god would you bust you're balls getting to number one in a division to be passed out by some lad with a pool noodle.

What incentive have you got to move up the ranks when it means nothing.

The No.1 & No.3 PPVs of all time are headlines by non-title fights, and the three highest paid fighters of all time got these purses from non-title fights (one wasn't even a main-event).

MMA will be split in two. They'll mark Conor's rise and have to use the term "BC (Before Conor)" when talking about when the game was all about the belts.

"Remember the good old days when Chuck was the champ. Times were different."

    - "Sure, but that was 10 BC"

Yeah as soon as Eddie started tweeting Conor pretty much confirmed it wasn't happening.

Pity, I think McGregor should be on the bill for 205 but with who?

Could his foot still be fecked?

This is set up for Conor GSP at 206 in Canada.

Except the number one guy hasn't fought anyone relevant in over 2 years and will get the shot after looking average against a nobody.

I think it's a bad match up for Khabib tbh, especially with that ring rust.

So will Aldo/Mcgregor make it onto the 205 card or are they keeping that for UFC 207?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,024 ✭✭✭JokerD

I still wouldn't be ruling out McGregor V Alvarez at 205 for some reason. Only a matter of hours ago Eddie was tweeting about McGregor with Kavanagh responding.

There's still a main/co-main for NYC to be announced and it really would surprise me if there's no McGregor.

The New Years' card looks like it could be DC v AJ and Cruz v Cody, there's even talk of Rousey returning so I think they might leave it at that.

haha what a mess. Dana could be bullsh!tting with that tweet in Conor like fashion to try and steer negotiations into his court. As much as Id like to see Khabib wreck Eddie was way more excited to see how Conor would fare. I'd say its still very much up in the air.

If that's accurate it's like 202 all over again when news broke the UFC were looking for an alternative fight only for the fight to be made. I still think the fight happens. Only doubt is the Khabib and Dana tweet but I'm sure it'll get worked out.

I don't get why people are so disappointed in his performance in that fight. He absolutely dominated from start to finish.

He was actually getting caught in the standup at the very start. Dominated once he initiated grappling.
