Not sure how reliable a source this Dave Meltzer guy is (probably not very) but he says it wasn't Dana's call, it was Lorenzo's:

Above comments start around 7mins in:

Conor's tweet this morning thanked Lorenzo, which I thought was a bit unusual. I was thinking maybe Lorenzo pulled rank on Dana and is making the fight go ahead.

All in all, I find it hard to believe the UFC have backed down. If it is true, the only thing I can figure is that Conor has relented to do some more promotion than the NYC presser. One thing for sure, no way has the UFC relented to all Conor's demands around the promotion.

Honestly if the tweet is real a number of things could've happened. A compromise, a fine, an injury.

Could also be McGregor doing the whole ethos of if you say it'll happen it'll happen.

Ha ha, just as this sideshow rumbles on I've found a good "spot the difference" competition.

Now we're all fully aware that RTE has no knowledge or interest in the thuggery that is MMA but you would have thought that basic journalism and production of verifiable news would be quite integral to their very existence. . .or is it just me???

Anyway, here's their link to this story - http://www.rte.ie/sport/mma/2016/0425/784008-mcgregor-back/

    Nothing controversial there.

Now have a look at the image I've attached to see the headline they had up earlier this morning before they were advised by most of the comments preceding it that this "news" was not actually verified by any other source.

Anyway, slow news day in the Teal household. . .

I wrote a comment under the article saying it was a cynical headline...Maybe that's why they changed it...Course I was downvoted to hell!
My brother has been doing a bit of freelance MMA stuff for them lately on the radio/tv.

Unfortunately I think it's not true also but I don't think it was motivated by him having a laugh, I actually think it's a good chess move in all this as it puts all focus back on the UFC as the one's being responsible for the fight not going ahead. It also ensures all ears will be on John Kavanagh's appearance on the MMA Hour later tonight.

We'll if he hasn't anything agreed with UFC and is tweeting that.....then it's not really a good move. It's childish trolling and he's not gonna be looking good after it.

By some people it will, for sure, but the vast majority of people that want to see this fight (and they are the ones Conor will be trying to reach at the end of the day) will see the tweet as Conor just posting on-point sarcasm in an effort at getting people to see who is ultimately responsible for the fighting not taking place. Helwani for one will continue his line about how everyone wants the fight to go ahead and so.. let them fight.

UFC should be fining Conor not removing him from the card. It's illogical.

Still think there is somewhat of a ruse going on though. Tug of war to create interest in a fight almost nobody cared about this time two weeks ago.

Fine him for what though? Do we know for certain that he has even broken any terms of his contract. We can only speculate as to what is contained in his contract or even in the contract for this particular event, if thee is one. They'd be setting a very dangerous precedent if they tried to fine him over this.

And whatever about missing the media obligations they would certainly be shooting themselves in the foot if they tried to fine him for not fighting.

What fight are you talking about here? Are you saying there was little interest in McGregor/Diaz 2 before this all kicked off?

From Conors perspective...the focus is all on him and the head boys of the UFC and not is defeat to Diaz.

Does anyone know why he went to Iceland to train? Why didn't his team just go to America and set up there?

He trains in Iceland quite often with Gunnar Nelsons team Mjolnir. There is a a very close relationship with SBG and them thanks to Nelson.

Far less distractions there as well I'd imagine.

I don't get all the hatred especially on this an Irish forum for McGregor, can you imagine the same for Katie Taylor fighting for Ireland winning all those medals...would never happen

can only think of 2 reasons, his personality his brashness (his Dubliness) can't be his fighting style surely

He goes against the Catholic Ireland repression we still suffer from as a nation, more or less the same reason Bono is despised. Irish begrudgers don't have a problem with success, that's a myth - they demand humility. Katie Taylor is very humble compared to McGregor which is why people love her - God forbid an Irish person come out and say "you know what, I'm f*cking good at what I do, and I damn well know it".

I've found during my life that almost all such begrudgery comes down to this. You can be as good as you like at something, as long as you publicly maintain the "I'm not all that good really, I'm just lucky / blessed" bullsh!t. Or "maybe I am that good, but I don't deserve it".

Calling out your significant worth publicly is just not on. The nuns / brothers back in school would have been appalled. :pac:

Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying.

Most of the talk was about just why this fight was even happening and why it was that Conor was not defending his belt. There were even calls for him to be stripped of it. Here's just a selection of posts from this forum on the days surrounding the announcement of the rematch:

The amount of shits I don't give about this fight. *sigh*

Without question the vast majority of posts I seen either here, or on Twitter, on Podcasts, under YT vids, other forums etc etc, were all showing a meh attitude to the fight. It wasn't until this whole debacle kicked off with the 'Thanks for the cheese' tweet that the balance shifted and suddenly the majority of postings about the fight were positive about it happening. Which is what, imo, has fueled most of the conspiracy theories. It was seen as bizarre to have this rematch as the top of the card fight at UFC 200 and now it's the opposite and the majority are saying that no other fight can save it. Interesting turn of events, wouldn't you say.

I would still have to wholeheartedly disagree with you when you say that almost nobody cared about it. There has been huge interest in this fight since even before it was confirmed. Its the fight that people want to see. In terms of interest its easily one of the biggest ever. There was certainly not a meh attitude!

Everyone you went to the trouble of qouting (all 8 of them from thousands of comments here alone) there would have been tuned in just like the rest of us on the night of UFC 200.

You really think that the UFC would have been puting a fight that no one cared about about as the main event on the biggest card in their history ahead of all the title fights out there? Suuuuuurrre.

It's certainly the fight everyone wants now.

And by everyone, I mean the masses, the people who matter. Not hardcore MMA fans on the UG who want to see the Edgar fight but in truth would buy UFC 200 if it was headlined by Demetrius Johnson V another flyweight can.

No one said it was the fight that everyone wanted. Of course its not. But it is the fight that has piqued the most interest, hence the reason it was chosen to be main event of UFC 200.

Its not the purists or the superfans choice but its the one that will sell. For anyone to say there has been little interest in it (as was said here just a while ago) is ludicrous.

It's a bit silly to be discussing how interested people were in the Conor v Nate match since those who didn't want it never said they wanted Conor out of it. The majority of objections were that Conor should be defending his title. Removing Conor from the card still doesn't give those people what they wanted. It doesn't give anyone what they want besides Dana.

It's the fight everyone wants now because it was dangled in front of you then snapped away.
If it was built as Aldo v McGregor for UFC200 or Edgar v Mcgregor then all of a sudden it was cut from the card you'd want it back.

This is how it is for me personally.

I wasn't exactly jumping out of my seat with excitement for McGregor v Diaz. I would've preferred to see McGregor rematch Aldo or Edgar.

Now however, I want McGregor v Diaz more than I did before
