2215 update from met eireann mentions road closures in the west tomorrow....a first....

Extremely wet and windy countrywide overnight. Prolonged spells of heavy rain in the western half of the country, leading to treacherous driving conditions and flooding there. Southwest winds will be strong to gale force with damaging gusts, the most severe winds will occur in western and southwestern coastal counties. However, in the northwest winds will moderate for a period around dawn. Lowest temperatures of 8 to 11 degrees.

    Tomorrow

Exceptionally wet and windy throughout the day on Saturday. Extended periods of heavy or torrential rain in the northwest and west likely to cause widespread flooding and road closures in these areas. The heavy rain in the west will persist well into the evening. However, in southeastern and eastern counties, rain will become lighter and intermittent at times. The very strong southwesterly winds will also persist throughout the day and will increase again to gale force along the Atlantic seaboard in the afternoon. Highest temperatures of 10 to 13 degrees.

    Outlook

Saturday night will remain wet in all parts of the country, with further widespread heavy falls of rain resulting in ongoing flooding in many areas. Southwesterly winds will be strong and gusty at first but winds will moderate overnight while veering northwesterly. Early on Sunday morning, rain will finally clear all areas leaving just isolated showers in the north and northwest. Sunny spells will develop and northwest to west winds will continue to moderate, while later backing south to southeast; however, it will feel rather cool.

Early on Sunday night, a band of rain will spread northwards across the country, and winds veering southerly will become very strong and gusty once again. This new wet spell will maintain the threat of flooding in many areas. It will stay wet and windy for the first half of Monday but rain will clear to showers on Monday afternoon, and southerly winds will moderate to some extent. It will feel a little milder also.

The remainder of next week will see further showers or longer outbreaks of rain, although the south and east will become drier later. Winds will be west to southwest in direction and will be strong much of the time. The mid-week period will be rather cool but milder conditions are likely to develop later.

Ill confirm tomorrow. Rain gauge often overreads it before stopping. But overall total usually right.

It has been very continuous in sligo town.

Was in Sligo earlier and now back home in South Donegal. Live by the coast. Winds ar ed gusty but nothing out of ordinary for winter here. Rainfall is light, has been for last 2 hours. Obviously I'm hoping that this is it and people are spared flooded homes, businesses and farms but in think Met Eireann are going to look a little over reactionary come Sunday. I have no issue with a yellow alert for wind and rain but this red alert has the country hyped up. I have a sneaky suspicion things are going to get downgraded to yellow for most of the county and an orange alert for high ground.

Generally wet and windy conditions reported in mid-Kerry this evening. Nothing too severe but still enough to make a person take note of whats happening.

The rain isn't going to be a Red warning in absolutely every place it's forecast to be a Red warning. Here in west Clare its been lashing for hours and if it keeps up like this I can only imagine how flooded areas may become.

The red warning is for rain totals up until 3am Sunday. It's not even 11pm on Friday yet. That's an awful lot of rain yet to fall. It doesn't need to be exceptionally heavy, if it's persistent for that long on top of saturated ground then flooding is inevitable.

    100% agree.

West Limerick got pretty soggy on Thursday with the level of raifall experienced. Ground is still staurated. Prolonged rain on top of this will lead to further flooding.

It's been lashing here in sandyford for the last 3 hours. Very strong wind, not gale force but very strong - howling and strong enough to hammer the rain against the windows/velux etc. front garden grass already under water. Persistent rain will defo be the problem

I'm sick of wind and rain. Please give me ice, frost and HOPEFULLY snow before too long!!!

Same here in NW Clare. Just drove home and have to go out again, not looking forward to driving as there is lots of water on the roads and in some sections water is starting to build up. Stream down the road looks near the top and if it overflows the road will become impassible very quickly. Wind gusts are very strong although not as strong as earlier.

    NW Clare

Had 2 nights booked in the armada hotel with the mrs in spanish point overlooking the atlantic in Clare. Just listening to the wind and rain hammering against the hotel window, and watching the waves crash against the shore. Its been like this since 7 pm.
