12Z HIRLAM has a clearance well into the W & NW at the same time.

It's a 36 hour accumulation up until that time, it doesn't show the hourly rainfall for that time.

Cheers Maq. Sorry, yes I posted the wrong chart in response. Saw too late it was an accumulations one you had posted. Deleted post subsequently, just in case anyone's looking for it.

Same as if you look at the west Scottish coast, looks like it's clearing but then new bands constantly being developed.

From listening to the forecast I thought we were getting really heavy rain its probably more that the rain is going to last 30+hours thats the problem and not that it is particularly heavy rain...

Gerard said on RTÉ it's the PERSISTENCE of the rain.

In Sligo. It is a wet and windy evening but nothing out of the normal. The wind is gusty perhaps F8 at times...I'm on the coast. The rain is not as heavy as I thought it would be.

Yes i suppose...the rain outside looks heavier too than what it looks like on the new radar images

Light rain since about 18.00 here in Ardfert, 3mm

  • Registered Users Posts: 998 ✭✭✭dharma200

It is scarily windy here in North Galway. It is lashing sideways and am already concerned about some trees close to the house. This is worse than I can remember the previous being.... 30 hours of rain is bad news round these parts :(

♫ Oh, the weather outside is frightful,
But the fire is so delightful.
And since we've got no place to go,
Let It Rain! Let It Rain! Let It Rain!

If you get stuck under 24+ hours of persistent rain, you only need a few mm an hour to get a pretty significant total. There will be heavier pulses of rain pushing in a times tonight and tomorrow too.

Looking at the met eireann radar (7 pm Friday) it looks like a band of rain is sweeping down from the north west but has cleared behind. Nothing hugely severe in that band either.

    More to come?

More will push up tomorrow though

Looking at the met eireann radar it looks like a band of rain is sweeping down from the north west but is cleared behind.

The main issue with the rain is that the band is moving from the south west to the north east and is a very long band. This means that it will be over parts of the country for longer than usual and the accumulation of rainfall will be high.

The intensity is not really the issue. (Although it will be intense at times)

Their radar is rubbish for the North West. It's not even registering on met.ie radar
