i really wouldn't worry about that. no need to let it cloud your judgement of the person as a public rep.

i'm in a high paid/high responsibility job. Somedays i wear jeans and runners to work, other days i wear jeans and shirt, etc etc.

the days i wear runners, the job gets done equally as well as the days i dont.

Would you go in to meet a new boss or client in a pair of nike air max?

I don't buy this argument, and it often comes up with regards to Mick Wallace.

Professionalism goes a long way. Especially when you're vying to govern a country.

He wants to represent a constituency of a quarter of a million people.

Call me shallow, but I think it just looks lazy.

So barefoot some days and shirtless others. Obviously a very understanding employer

It is the only thing I could judge him on. I didn't watch all the program but a good portion in the middle and I didn't see him offer or try to offer an opinion on anything.

My original comment was somewhat tongue in cheek.

    Has anyone used Smartvote.ie?

I hadn't even heard of it but I gave it a go and the results were very interesting! It's a good way of seeing which candidates stand for the things you feel strongly about.

Almost no fg/Lab tds have gone to these shows, I'd say maybe 3 have and Vinnie has almost the whole country done at this stage.

Here's Ivan Yates' prediction, on Newstalk today.

    http://www.newstalk.com/election2016/Prediction:-Fine-Gael-will-lose-seat-in-Dublin-Fingal-in-Ministers-bid-for-reelection
Pundit Ivan Yates maintains Clare Daly, James Reilly, Darragh O'Brien (FF), Brendan Ryan (LAB) will all take seats, while the fifth seat will go to Sinn Féin's Louise O'Reilly - though it will be hard won.

Clare Daly will top the poll in this busy constituency, where Yates expects to see as many as ten counts.

Separately, there is some speculation that Deputy Daly will not run for the Anti-Austerity Alliance, because she is not popular in that grouping.

"It ends up one, one, one, one, and one" says Yates: "The fragmentation of Irish politics is starting to appear. One Fine Gael, One Labour - two for the government - one Independent Socialist, one Sinn Féin, and one Fianna Fáil".

Interesting he predicts Alan Farrell loosing out to J Reilly, personally I would see it as the other way round.
Also predicting SF gaining the last seat, not so sure about that.

it's not about whether i would meet people wearing runners or not. And yes I meet many clients wearing casual/smart casual clothes. Luckily, our clients don't care what we wear, so long as we get the job done properly.

In general in my life I try not to judge people based on appearance.

If they do what they are supposed to do, and do it well, then that's all that concerns me.

    It's genuinely how I feel.

Only managed to log on just now , nearly a week without boards , had to talk to herself and go for''walk's'' gawd, anyhoo I went to look at the debate and accidentally deleted it,some how I don't think I missed much apart from the red runner's.....and if that was the only interesting point, save us all the bother now and cancel the election ,leave things as they are ,nothing much will change anyway.
There's more life below in Dardistown Graveyard than the body politik in the country, how about a politcal big brother show ,where they'd be abandoned on one of the new island's on the Shannon,,, I'd kick it off by giving em a boat with only one oar , a table with 3 leg's and one cup with a hole in it for water ,deadly thank gawd ,boards is back.

Tnk's Martin ... 2 hours of same ole ..same ole .. Fingal WAS A Finna Fail county -- not surprised the 2 Finne Gaol loser's did't turn up - if they don't turn up for the Dail ,, why bother for them that pay em ,, the rest a right motely crew ..god help us ... just as well it's not a posal vote or no one would spend tupence on the stamp... ohh yer man's red runner's out did Claire's stripey outfit , noticed they put her at a table to herself being a TD ,,,, did she have access to her own private bar ?

  • Registered Users Posts: 556 ✭✭✭dslamjack

One point of interest , Fingal C.C has no housing policy, this does not surprise me given the council appalling history of bad planning , lobbyist's , Rambo n co ,we'll say no more on that, let sleeping dog lie I say,but it does appear to back up Nama figures featured in this news article a while back http://www.breakingnews.ie/ireland/heres-a-breakdown-for-each-county-of-the-number-of-houses-nama-provided-in-2015-714182.html .
People need to decide if it is the job of local or national government to provide social housing once and for all.
Less we forget,it was the great social housing sell off that kick started the Septic Tiger, lesson's need to be learned,it should be a precondition encased in law that any future social housing developments in public ownership be exempted from being sold on to sitting tenant's.
Also qualification for social housing needs to be addressed, those who think it is their quest to populate the country on their own and without ever doing a day's work should be the first to be left off the list.I'm sorry but if you bring children in to the world and can't put a roof over their head, the children should be put in care..end off.
Like wise too the criminal fraternity, generations of some that never did an honest day's work in their live's,while expecting to be housed and there sprog's cared for in between their hollier's in the Joy.
Louth C.C has to be applauded on their stance on the Traveller's, they have been offered alternative housing,b/b accommodation, the nonsence of providing halting site's should be ended.
If people don't want to live in a house, that's their choice,if they can afford to spend 50k on a mobile home, then let them buy sites themselves, land is cheap and plentiful these day's.
This minority status nonsense is a laughable joke,we are a socialist republic, according to the constitution all citizens are equal,no section of the community should be singled out for special treatment, you only have to look to the north to see where all that ended up.
Also the income's of people getting social housing needs to be defined,if two people work in the same job on the same basic pay,why could it be that one get's a mortgage while the other lives on a subsidised rent ,and spends the difference in the bookies and pub.
Providing social housing can also be seen as government indirectly subsiding low pay and employer's that don't want to pay a decent living wage that would enable their employee's purchase their own homes.
Also, the ordinary taxpayer and the question of providing a house ,home apartment to the newly arrived immigrant needs to be addressed, should they get priority over those all ready homeless or in need of accommodation.
One thing that came out of the debate, this government has no record of housing ...zero,,zilch,,none,absolutely appauling record, and as was quite rightly pointed out by the bould Claire, there were more houses built in one year in the 50's (before she was born n going with himself)when the country was properly broke with not tuppance to rub together, than was built in the whole of the country last year.
When the wannabee's come a knocking ,ye might want to remind them of that fact.

  • Registered Users Posts: 19,619 ✭✭✭✭Muahahaha

How is James Reilly looking, is his seat safe?

  • Registered Users Posts: 556 ✭✭✭dslamjack

The bould James seat is safe I'd say,the one in the Dail anyway,it's always empty,Td's are like absentee landlords, their never there when you need them and always there when it comes to being paid.
Fingal has the largest population of all the Dublin constituency's and the second largest populated county in the state.
That said ,plans for Fingal's own general hospital should be top of the election shopping list.
Thornton Hall (leaving the 30mill +envelopes out of it) should be fully developed as a maximum security prison housing 5,000 inmate's,development being done by one of the private security firm's on the same lend/lease arrangements as the toll road's.
Of course, the legal systems nice cosy little money go round would need to be sorted, and citizen's and victim's of crime need's put ahead of the criminal's ''right's''... laughable stuff here,a major drug's dealer given bail to go on honeymoon to Spain, cause it was booked before he got caught, people with so many previous conviction's and given bail,it's a wonder they don't give them super value point's when they do bother to appear.
Fingal and the other council's don't want to know about social housing, it's a headache they have done away with for themselves.
Let alone,do they not want the cost and expense of social housing, they do not want the cost of maintenance and the associated staff head count that involves.
The ethos of most council's these day's is to reduce their staff cost's and over head's by outsourcing as many service's as possible,in order to make their books clean and respectable.
A national housing agency need's to be set up,in the reverse mode of Nama, failing that, then Fingal C.C need's to set up and fund a housing agency to deal with the county's houing need's.
Metro north should be dropped as a fantastic waste of money, bring the Luas out from the point depot through the port tunnel(europe's biggest white elephant)to the Airport ,Swords Ballymun and Finglas, should have been done years ago.
Like wise a northern orbital ring road should be built north of Swords at Lissenhall linking the M1 and M2 at Ashbourne and the M3 north of Dunboyne, with a luas line adjacent to serve all three towns, with Sword's as it's hub.
This would allow for a ''North Western Sector'' to be developed between Sword's and Ashbourne not only for housing, but for industry and faster transport link's for the county as a whole.
Any way just another few questions that can be asked,if ye can be bothered, when they come a knockin ,,,, move along there now,hi mind the skanger in the pyjama's will ya .

Hospital, prison, housing, Dart, Tunnel, not a bad list.

I thought the lotto was won in Mayo, or has Joe Duffy officially called an end to our Financial Difficulties.

  • Registered Users Posts: 556 ✭✭✭dslamjack

What financial difficulties, they say the crash never bothered about 30% of the population, who were doing very nicely ,I'd say a lot of them could be in Tipperary North, they'll be having a poker classic n Bertie style whip around for the clown down there, they should make the shower in tipp north that voted for Mick pay for the price of that whole fiasco.
It's a pity that those that voted Bertie and FF can't be held to account and their income capped as a reward for their greed and stupidity.
Low and behold,on the news their saying the crash was all the fault of the bank's and the central bank, just as well I suppose,I mean, nothing that happens the country is the fault of the sitting government of the day,it was't me and I won't do it again, Finance ministers that did't have a bank account ,remember o'donoghue's 3 foot high anti terrorist wall built around the house,Dunnes Stores painting ministers houses or did they just pay for the extension was it? .. they say a people get the government they deserve, well that has proved true in the past in spades, has the calibre of the candidates improved, going on the debate last week ,we'd be better off with Bosco and Zig n Zag.

An interesting article by NewsTalk ,http://www.newstalk.com/election2016/Being-a-TD-isnt-worth-becoming-a-prck--TDs-give-advice-to-ge16-candidates

Yep the political life can be very hard, longer holliers than any worker in the state , trying to keep track of the expenses, holiday homes and mobile phones, have ye tried to keep 4 house's and housekeepers ,let alone the cars being waxed, trying to fit in the junkets, the Paddy's day list will be the first on the new government's agenda,2 subsidised bar's and restaurant's,and they actually get appearance money when they do come out of hiding and appear in the Dail, and that's just usually to let their colleagues know their still alive and to check and see their's no new allowance that they might be missing out on,God forbid in all harm,if they did a day's work, they'd be looking for an allowance for that to get counselling, save us all, don't stir the paste if ye can't hang the paper,me auld grannie used to say.

  • Registered Users Posts: 556 ✭✭✭dslamjack

Another thing too, driving from Lusk to the city centre(mater hosp-car park 3.50 an hour),one long continuous line of traffic heading toward's Lusk,Rush and Skerries, the sheer volume of traffic expected to use what is primarily an old medieval coach road is crazy.
Don't even get me going on the mickey mouse set up between Great Gas at Turvey Ave and Blakes Cross, truly Irish road engineering at it best LOL.
Is there even a plan to bring a decent dual carriageway from the M1 to service Lusk , Rush and Skerries? ,it was the least the N.R.A could have done after choosing the inland route for the M1,but there again the original idea for the M1 was that there were to be no exits for any town between Dublin and Belfast,if my memory serves me,now that's really Irish planning for ye.
Yep,one of the largest populations in the state live near the M1 north of the Airport, arr sure were too busy dancing at the crossroad's,speaking of crossroad's ,maybe some of the candidate's could be encouraged to try dancing in the middle of Blakes Cross some evening, now that would be fun.

The SmartVote website is quite interesting.

I did not realise that there were so many PPP/AAA/Socalist leaning independents in the constituency.

    I'm guessing the return TDs will be 1 SF/ 1 FF/ 1 FG/ 2 IND.

  • Registered Users Posts: 556 ✭✭✭dslamjack

I woul't say you're far off the mark there Cupra,it's gonna be handbags n slander at sundown on the big day.
Crime,Crime,Crime , proper reform of our useless legal system once and for all, proper sentences for criminals,a Life sentence meaning exactly that , LIFE without Parole.
There are thousand's of professional, habitual, evil criminal's out running around free either on bail, awaiting trial, or on holiday between conviction's.
For the majority of this scum there are no redeeming factors and certainly no hope of ''rehabilitation''or of them ever been decent members of society.
Indeed many of them ,although being in receipt of housing , social welfare since school age, have never worked a day in their live's and never had any intention of so doing either.
It is quite literally ,take take take and usually without the owner's permission.
I remember Pat Kenny on his radio show and court report interviewing criminals outside one of the court's,see that barrister there say's braindead,I put his 3 kid's through uni ,waving at the wig going up the steps of the court,he was up for his 182'sd appearance.
You could go on all day,for years even, about the money go round/revolving door of the Irish criminal system.Basically the same old face's and story between them day in,day out, the criminal'a appearing, the fee's gathered by those representing them etc etc etc.
The only loser's here are the pensioner attacked and robbed in their home, children being mugged on their way to school, home and business owners devastated by theft, the list goes on.
Election after election,we hear these useless sap's going on about crime and a few year's back ''Zero Tolerance'', the zero was right, that's what it amounted too before it was seen off by the hand rubbing legal profession and neo liberal do-gooder's.
FineGall's response was to close as many Garda station's as they could(none beside any sitting Td's home I'll wager),they saved 500k for the first year(the electricity bill for the station's),the lad's in the Joy laughed themselves silly, the wig's and brief's pre ordered there 2015 jag's and bently's and arranged berth's for the yacht at the marbella regatta.
The rest of the criminal fraternity went on the mother of all crime spree's,even taking to boat's to loot house's and business's amid the recent flooding.
I can't put it any simpler, we need American style justice for some of this human sewage, like the 3 misdemeanour's or criminal offence's and bang ,life in prison without any possibility of parole,or the doubling of the current life sentence to 50 year's with 40 year's having being served before early release is considered.
O'hh you'll get the usual from the legal profession about them only being allowed out on licence and all that bleeding heart guff, give me a break.
Justice need's to be seen to be done for the Victim's,not the self serving legal profession and their ever productive criminal client's.
We as Irish people know only too well about injustice and rotten ,corrupt and abusive law,it is burned in to our national psyche and part of which the 1916 rising sought to change, but it time the scale's of justice swung back in favour of the ordinary citizen ,taxpayer and more importantly the victim of crime.
If any of those seeking election are serious about crime , then they should have no problem finding the mean's to restore the closed Garda station's back to the communities that never wanted them closed in the first place and closer to home Getting Thornton Hall built A.S.A.P ...end of sermon

I wonder if james reilly will be wheeling out the 'north county needs a minister' banners to park at the side of the road?

Not a major step up from healy rae and lowry. And the others, particularly the independents may come up with worse in the weeks ahead. The broadcasters and papers would do well to remind the electorate that we are supposed to be electing a national government to run the country and represent Ireland internationally. If you want 'all politics to be local' go play in the sandpit for the 2019 locals.

Householders to pay for recycling --- Fine Gall + Labour just don't get it do they - Alan Kelly should do the electorate a favour and not bother to run again -- maybe he should follow the lead shown by Richie Ryan(Richie Ruin) and introduce a tax on foot ware and walking, how about a tax for the use of pedal's on bicycle's.

A lady in the audience brought up the Rush sewage issue and the fact that sewage is still being pumped in the Irish sea untreated in Rush(is the same still true for Balbriggan).
Myself in my foggy minded afton induced haze, thought all this work was done, what with them digging up the Channel road in Rush twice for Eirgrid and the sewerage(I believe some house's on channel rd were left out , and the newly surfaced road will have to be opened at great expence).
Anyway evidently not ,and with Irish Water coming on the scene,it gave F.C.C the chance to off load the cost off their balance sheet.
Below is a link to the Rush Community website , which sheds more light on this ongoing fiasco
