3 months most likely with a broken jaw in 2 places

    Fukk. Big loss

  • Registered Users Posts: 490 ✭✭Mulbert

On a point of interest, because of the shape of the jawbone it seldom breaks in one place only!

  • Registered Users Posts: 969 ✭✭✭cul beag

So you think we were not out played yesterday for most of the game and were happy to see ball after ball being wasted?

Don't rise to the bait because you dare not criticise the regime.

Barry coughlan out now with a broken jaw.
Who will be the new full back ??

He has escaped for a long time because he's constantly at opposing players off the.ball. Unfortunately he's not a Diarmud O Sullivan or a Brian Logan that he can mix it when the tough stuff starts. Not nice to hear that he has that injury though.

Do Lohan and O'Sullivan have unbreakable jaws? 😂

Coughlan can mix it with the best of them. What do you mean 'escaped' ?

So to sum up the mood

1 To the dismay of many Waterford won. Clare's scores were easier but strangely they couldn't get as many easy scores as we got hard scores. Waterford were outplayed for long periods but again strangely despite this and the easy scores they weren't far enough away from Clare to avoid winning.

Derek McGrath should be sacked as teams that play against us hit cross field ball to their corner forwards.

    2. This thread is predominantly posted to by people whom, for whatever reason have a serious distain toward Derek McGrath. Whatever the result, be good or bad it is seen as a poor performance. Nothing is good enough and negativity prevails by the more multiple posters. Most people I talk to couldn't give two fks about the league or hurling in March, it's all to do with the summer.

Though you wouldn't think it with the constant negativity and criticism aimed at Coughlan by a number of posters here, he is a huge loss and deservedly one of the first names on the teamsheet every game. Likely replacement would be Shane Fives moving across although that weakens us in the corner with one of McNulty, Daniels or Conor Gleeson starting in the corner. Daniels might be considered although personally I wouldn't put him there. Most intriguing possibility would be to move TDB to FB and start Aussie at CB?

For some posters here the disappointment that Waterford won was somewhat lessened by the silver cloud that some of Dereks Pets didnt play well.

Hang in there lads, there is a long season yet, ye never know yer prayers might be answered and Tipp might beat us by 8 goals this time round.

    Fingers crossed!!!

Coughlan the best full back in the country?? That's one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard.

It's never nice to see a player get injured but it might turn out a blessing if we finally get the full back position sorted out properly in his absence. Shane Fives to full back and maybe Conor Gleeson to corner back? Lack of numbers could be an issue with fringe players not showing the requisite quality. Stephen Daniels looks a liability. Philip Mahoney should be back soon but we need another back to show something.

Any updates on Daragh Fives' fitness? He'd be a huge addition but seems to be made of glass

Firstly, Coughlan injured is a massive blow. Aside from the fact that he's been doing a fine job, the big worry now is that the  managements tunnel-vision towards him at fullback they have literally tested no one else in this position, league or championship for the guts of 3 seasons. I've been saying it earlier in the league, its bizarre to stick with the same FB line during the league and not give someone else a run. Maybe the feeling was that Shane Fives would be the plan B at full back and  someone like Conor Gleeson or McNulty can slot into the corner. Fives has been a fine corner back for the past few seasons but little or no game-time at full back which is a different and specialist position. People assume he can just slot in there seamlessly. The only saving grace is at least this  happened when there is a league game left to get it sorted and not just before or during championship.

Like all things.....will he only be missed when hes gone....he comes in for some unreal harsh critism on here.....some of it bordering on obsessive by some posters

Always taught he did a good....if u spectauluar job at full back......who will replace him from inside the county now.....im expecting clean sheets and all opposite full forwards to held scoreless from here out......either that or alot pf those posters who seem to be irrationally obsessive about him and his performances are piling undue preasure and critism for reasons it would be unfair to speculate

Did you manage yet to come with the names of the 4 lads that should be on the team

Well said 'Enoughtaken'. Ah yes, the mysterious four players that he refuses to name but sly digs at Barry Coughlan and Derek MaGrath... While he will continue the ''digs'' etc and not name 'his' four players at least he will name a better full back than Barry Coughlan in the country. He will have to think long and hard and then back it up though firstly.

Opposition teams have been targeting Tadgh more than anything in this league and did so again on Sunday. In fact, I challenge anyone of the 'knockers' on here to name a better full back than Coughlan.

Oh and of course we will continue our wait for the so called ''four''.

Honestly cannot, and never could, understand the criticism of Coughlan.
Most saying he plays the man too much rather than the ball, but he's doing a fine job and this is something Waterford people were calling for, for as long as i can remember.

Now we have someone doing the business and they're saying it's a blessing in disguise that the lad has broke his jaw. Fairly disgusting tbh.

Would Conor Gleeson not be the best man to slot in there?

Surely Shane Roche ? Conor is a brilliant man marker too. Shane Fives plays very much off the front foot and the full back these days have to be more restrained and spoil a lot.

Look at the roasting Tom Devine gave to the Clare defence when introduced.

Another man that was brilliant when he came on was Tommy Ryan. Often overlooked but showed once more what he can do, especially on a dry sod.

Best of luck to Barry Coughlan on his recovery hope he is back for the Munster championship. If you look at the Full backs in the other 8 hurling counties Barry is probably mid tier. He wasn't nominated all star last year tho was the year before. The Dublin Full Back is impressive and obviously Burke and Barry ahead at the moment. BC is about Dillon level ahead of couple of others.

Last Sunday TdeB went Full Back in the second half to mark Podge and BC stayed on Shanagher. From time to time Shane Fives or Noel Connors would be in there and against Dublin in 2015 Dara Fives played no.3 when Noel Connors went off injured.

The problem with Barry Coughlan is that while he was left in there to grow into the position you now have no one else battle hardened to go in there ie Shane Roche or Kieran Bennett. Conor Gleeson or Shane Mc could go in there if marking a smaller type. Having said that I just named 7/8 options which can't be bad thing either.

No doubt Coughlan will be missed but McGrath has put no plans in place over the last 3 years in case of an injury to Coughlan. I would say Coughlan has played all but one league and championship game since 2015 and now, we have no tried or tested option in Coughlan's absence. We have seen Michael Ryan and Brian Cody test players in this vital position throughout the league, hence giving them a player that has played at least one game at full-back at senior level.

However there are some options despite this lack of experience. Conor Gleeson played the under 21 championship there last year, and done a good job as he picked up the dangermen for other counties like Shanagher when we played Clare. Shane Fives can move across and has the height and speed that hopefully will see him adapt to the position and I think he played there underage. Tadhg de Búrca could be tried back at full back and similarly to Fives, he has speed and the ability to man mark. Also, as we may be playing Tipp who will have Callinan at full forward, I'm sure Noel Connors could do as a makeshift full back to man mark him. Other options like Conor Prunty (injured), Shane Roche, Kieran Bennett, Shane McNulty (more experienced than other 3) etc are untested at this level in any position, never mind full back.

I have never been one to criticise McGrath on this forum like others, but I feel it is a basic mistake to not have tried another player at full back in the league in case of injury to Coughlan.

On a positive note, it was great to get the win in Ennis on Sunday despite not performing to the best of our ability but winning was the most important thing, and the team and management achieved this and avoided the relegation playoff and now have the opportunity to push on and try to win a national title.

Ironically Shane Roche it seems left panel due lack opportunity. Keiran Bennett has at least a couple of 21 and Fitzgibbons campaigns behind him and the next logical step is a no pressure league game. He also has the benefit of the chasing his brothers around the back garden for years! Prunty is back in contention, Ian Kenny was there last Sunday and Seamus Keating another defensive option to cover Shane Fives if he is FB.

Daragh Fives and Philip Mahony are nearly there. Does anyone have an update on Michael Harney?

I think people forget the issues Waterford have had with full back in recent times. Considering that, Barry has done a fine job. It's not a position for fancy hurling and he's great at putting full forwards off their game. Liam Lawlor was underrated at it too.

It's not so long ago we had to try Ken McGrath and Brick Walsh at full back as there was no better option.
