Europe's Best Splatoon Team Can Win A Nintendo NX System

Rollers at the ready: Splatoon players all across Europe can battle it out in the first ESL Go4Splatoon tournament, kicking off at 16:00 CEST this Sunday. Powered by ESL, the world’s largest esports company, the six-month season of tournaments will culminate with a grand final showdown in 2017, where the winning team from each month’s cup will compete to win Nintendo’s next video game system, code-named NX.

The first weekly cup takes place this Sunday afternoon, with players on the cup-winning team each receiving an item of official Splatoon clothing signed by members of the Splatoon development team. The top teams of each weekly tournament will earn Go4Splatoon ranking points, and each calendar month, the eight teams with the most ranking points will proceed to the following month’s Europe Monthly Final, with September’s highest-ranked teams going through to the monthly cup in mid-October.

As the season goes on, the stakes get higher, as the victorious side in each monthly cup will proceed to the grand final in 2017. This ultimate splat showdown will reveal Europe’s best Splatoon team, and each player on the winning side will receive Nintendo’s next video game system, code-named NX.

Teams ready to put their skills to the test can sign up for the first tournament on the ESL Go4Splatoon website, where further details about tournaments and full rules and regulations can also be found.

Bethesda Will Consider Developing For The Nintendo NX If It’s As Powerful As The Xbox One Or More

A few weeks back, we have reported that Bethesda may consider supporting the upcoming Nintendo NX if it makes sense to the publisher. In a recent interview, Pete Hines has elaborated more on the matter, also noting that some of the publisher’s titles might appeal to the Nintendo audience in some way.

Speaking with Metro UK, Pete Hines talked about how Bethesda hasn’t supported Nintendo hardware for a long time mostly due to hardware related issues, with the games in development not fitting without  some major cuts.

No, no. it’s usually been one of a technical… hardware issue. It’s just, what it is that the devs are making and what are the hardware requirements that they’re looking at, to support what they’re making? And what fits? And anything that is below the line is, ‘Well, we can make it work, but we’d have to cut this or that or do it like…’ But no, that’s not the point. The point is to take the game, as you designed it, and to get it working on those platforms. Not make a bunch of cuts and a bunch of changes and bring out some other version of it.

Interestingly enough, Pete Hines revealed that Bethesda will consider supporting the NX if the console is powerful enough. Games far into development, such as Dishonored 2, wouldn’t be coming, but anything that’s still in development could be considered.
So if NX is announced in the next few weeks and is as powerful as an Xbox One or higher, then…

Then it will absolutely be something that we consider. Okay… let’s say they come out and say tomorrow it does X, Y, and Z. Well, Dishonored 2 is way down the road, it’s not in the conversation. But anything that is in development, I think we’d take a look at and see if technically does it line up with what they’re doing?

Even if things do line up, there’s still the Nintendo audience to consider, but this doesn’t seem to be a major concern, with Pete Hines stating that they do have any number of things that might appeal to it, albeit in a different way than Nintendo franchises.

“And then to your point, of course we always want to look at what we’re doing from an audience standpoint. But I think that we have any number of things that might appeal to the Nintendo audience. Maybe it’s not as appealing as Super Smash Bros., or it doesn’t appeal to that exact same audience, but that doesn’t mean that there’s not still an audience there.”

The Nintendo NX launches during March 2017 in all regions.

The 'Nintendo audience' has to be considered? Differently to the Xbox or Playstation audience? What's that supposed to mean. Sounds a bit negative to me.

Could be taken a couple ways. Either the Nintendo audience are the ones who've stuck with them and are fans of Zelda, Mario, Metroid, etc. Or they're the audience who are into the party games and other more casual games.
Then the non Nintendo audience are the ones who just want to be able to play the annual FIFA and CoD games as well as other third party games they can't currently get on Nintendo consoles.

Like I said before, as long as Nintendo get the games at release and with similar content to the other platforms. Don't want another Mass Effect. Oh, we're putting Bioshock Infinite on the NX and it comes out the same time that the trilogy is coming to the other consoles.

Nintendo audience, they have better taste in games and are typically a happier and healthier looking lot.
    Sure, everyone here knows that!

I'm posting NX news, good, bad and indifferent. The Bethesda story had appeared minutes before my search and it'll be on a lot of sites once they catch wind of it.

It's good news to hear them talk about NX as a possible console to run their games, but isn't it really the kind of "go away and stop annoying me" answer that the likes of EA have been making for a while now?

    We haven't abandoned Nintendo hardware
We love all that Nintendo have done for gaming
    All Nintendo fans here
As soon as Nintendo make a console that it's worth our while making games for, we'll make games for it

That last one is the only one that is probably true.

Ultimately if they can port it with few compromises to new Nintendo hardware they'll be there.
If Nintendo produce an idiosyncratic system that is expensive to port to, then they won't bother.

It's a simple app game called "Mario Run", looks like Temple Run type of thing tbh.

Put there ya go, official Mario on Mobile

I wonder is it a timed exclusive?

Doesn't look much to be fair, thought the big N and Apple would gone down an emulation route or something with a dedicated controller...

Hope it's not iOS exclusive for too long!

    Interesting surprise.

I think this kind of game is the way to go with it though, simple and will probably turn out addictive. Anything more substantial for now will set it off slow.

I don't know how I feel about this, if it's very successful (likely) they could change priorities going forward especially if the NX flops like the WiiU

A few interesting possibilities after that surprise announcement:

Miyamoto is in the US, for perhaps other reasons too?
Maybe Nintendo wanted this announcement to come first before announcing any NX stuff.
Their stock has shot up in the last hour or so, in the near future would be a good time to piggyback off that, and the huge spread that Apple have, with an announcement.

It's a great idea, like Pokemon Go it generates interest in properties tied to the Nintendo brand and raises their profile.
And it indicates that, whatever the NX turns out to be, Nintendo don't consider Android or iOS competition but rather complementary and a way to spread the good news of Nintendo games being compelling and fun.
Hopefully that in turn will develop into Nintendo hardware and software sales.
You enjoy this experience on your €700 phone?
Sure, you can have more fun, in the full games, on this €300 console!
    Or something like that.

Seeing Samsung Gear VR lately, I wonder could that model be Nintendo's eventually step into VR too, simply detach side controllers from NX Tablet and insert it into VR Headset like you do with Note 7 and such. Just food for thought.

Im just thinking you may have nailed it. A setup like that would fit with many of the rumours especially the detachable motion controllers. Ill give you a medal if your right...

Thanks :) I dunno with all the NX rumors, a simple NX VR accessory is one theory I have never came across yet.
All Nintendo need to do is possible have some camera sensor in the NX Dock, and Detachable controllers and there you go, wire free VR at cheap entry point.

NX VR could be just another optional addition to the NX's feature list.
Its your console, its your handheld, its your wire free VR, etc...

It could be an optional 99e add on and thats it, and its wire free VR.
Compare this to cost of PSVR at over 600e and its wired and needs camera and controllers or to cost of 1500e one requires for PC+Oculus.

Also one things that for sure now after Sony PS4 Pro reveal @ 399e,
is tje NX will need to be priced 300-400e max, I could justify either if its combining price of 3DS+WiiU in one, maybe sweet spot at 350e.

Also now officially not blow away by what 4K PS4 Pro is, its a hard sell for parents justify need 4k version or upgrading the normal PS4,.
Which means all 45Mil Standard PS4 will get every game made, no special 4k games only.
Which is good news for NX when it comes to ports and 3rd party stuff.
NX now just needs to get close to X1 Specs, and not worry about PS4Pro or Scorpio.

All in all Sony conference help me be more optimistic and realistic that NX doesnt need all that extra power to compete to be a success.
It will be only console offering something new as well, as last few gens from rivals are basically more powerful machines and same controllers.
NX can differentiate itself being on the go and a console and whatever other magic Nintendo pull off.

Lastly all those mockups are extremely plain, wheres the Sharp Free Form Display Tech?
Maybe there some more Nintendo surprises in store when we get the NX reveal

I would say too that Nintendo wouldn't have to worry about multiplat support for a Nintendo VR system, seeing as it's pretty new and the money is going where the action is.
Much VR titles reviewed seem to be gaining low scores, in terms of actual gameplay.
A Nintendo effort, with their pedigree, could be just what the format needs.
It might be exactly what they were referring to, months ago, when they said that they wanted to wait to reveal the system for fear of being copied link to article from June 2016

I'm hoping the NX reveal has more life than the PS4 Pro reveal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,014 ✭✭✭✭Corholio

I have to say that if Nintendo had that weird Sony conference today and revealed their 4K machine doesn't have a 4K Bluray player, they would have been absolutely slaughtered because it would be a 'Nintendo' thing to do.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 11,054 Mod ✭✭✭✭Andrew76

Yeah watching that PS4 Pro reveal was a struggle. I was in the market for a new tv recently and after doing some research 4K and HDR is just too young a technology to invest in right now - and you get what you pay for buying a cheap 4K set. The Pro demands a high end tv yet it can't even play UHD discs, and you just know Sony are going to announce their Project Scorpio equivalent sometime next year too. No chance I'm upgrading my CUH-1200 PS4 just yet.

Anyway, watching it made me think that the NX reveal certainly can't be as bad as that. We know it's not going to be that powerful for a next gen but somethng close to the current PS4 would do me. It got me more optimistic about Nintendo's offering anyway.

That could be the key point there, by and large everything they do is polished and more importantly fun.

Andrew ya that PS4 reveal is making my way more relaxed now, the 2 presenters were a train wreck, it was like a low budget powerpoint deck and 4K HDR reveals over low quality streams just seems like it was showing same video content we normally see, nothing worth upgrading. Ill be looking fwd to my Scorpio\NX combo next year :)

So Nintendo have 3 days left to reveal the NX if they were going to do it before TGS, since it won;t be tomorrow or the weekend.
    Don't think it'll happen.

Wasn't the 21st or around then that was suggested in an earlier "leak"
