Nintendo NX To Be Region Free, Current Prototype Has 32GB of Internal Storage

    http://wccftech.com/nintendo-nx-to-be-region-free-current-prototype-has-32gb-of-internal-storage/

    32GB's is terrible if true.

A whopping 32GB internal storage? Jesus Christ...

Once Liam Robertsons's name was mentioned, stocked up on gallons of salt.

It doesn't mention it there but I've read that it contains an SD card slot and that the final product may have 64GB's. Wow, still brutal. Some of that will be eaten up by the OS and could be filled with a couple of games. Solution? Cloud storage? Still not ideal. I thought we'd get 500GB's minimum. Nintendo like SSD but that's still costly, right? And then there's the space to consider.

32GB would cripple the machine when it comes to digital downloads.

Nintendo really need to get out there and get their message out. In the absence of anything from them, these leaks and increasing speculation aren't doing them any favours.

If they've designed a home console that carries the limitations of a handheld console, then they've pulled a Nintendo again. I though the base unit part that allows tv play would handle the likes of storage etc, so they wouldn't need to splash out on loads of expensive nand memory.

Supposedly there's a rumours of an event on the 20th. But as usual at this stage, truckloads of salt.

And if they seriously want to push digital downloads, 32GB or 64GB is no way enough. 500gb on PS4/XB1 is inadequate.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,363 ✭✭✭✭super_furry

The machine that these specs are pointing to already exists - the Nvidia Shield tablet. It's got a Tegra K1 chip, 32gb a HDMI out port to allow you to hook it up to your main TV, and if you pair it with the iPega 9023, you have a bulky handheld console.

It's powerful enough in it's own right and can, with some fiddling, emulate the Gamecube, but it's two years old now and Nintendo need more.

You need 1TB minimum really, 500GB gets swallowed up very quickly as you've said. 32GB, if true, is double facepalm material.

Very true. How does the K1 compare to the X1/X2?

Yeah anything less than 500GB for a machine that will supposedly act like a home console is not enough. Hopefully they're not going to do the same as the Wii-U and expect folks to buy their own external drive for storage.

The only good bit of info from that link is the mention of region free - if it's true.

Nintendo doing their own thing and not competing with the other consoles can be a good thing, but damn it can also be backwards as hell.

I would hope that the rumoured home base would house a beefy hard drive as well as performing other functions like upping the resolution of games. So while you're out and about you'll rely on the internal memory and So cards.

Maybe the portable will have the 32GB and the dock will have a larger HDD.

Fingers crossed it will be like that.

Wild speculation reminds me of this. The NX better have backup ears!

You get a thumbs up just for selecting my favourite scene from Father Ted. Even still, after all these years it made me literally lol.

Wall Street Journal are now reporting that the NX will use cartridges. It makes sense for several reasons, cost, size, durability, piracy and saves on battery life.

Nintendo’s New NX Console to Go Retro With Videogame Cartridges

OF course it uses cartridges, its a handheld device ,
using spinning discs would use too much power and be too expensive to build.
it would be nice if it had an sdcard slot like most android phones ,
where games could be downloaded from the e shop .
32 gig sd cards are cheap .
And can be used to store music files as well as game save s .
Whats the chance of nintendo using a cheap standard open format,
    probably close to zero .

uh.... the 3DS supports SD cards. The Wii U supports SD cards. The Wii supports SD cards. And the Ds... well actually.. um... I think I hear my mother calling.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,431 ✭✭✭MilesMorales1

Is that not literally exactly what the 3DS does right now?

*checks 3DS* it is! It even plays music!

With Nintendo giving Hello Games a run for their money in terms of telling the customer precisely feck all of what they need to hear, the Medja are filling column inches with pointless comments like this one.
With less than six months to launch Nintendo really need to get the information out there and build a head of steam around the new hardware and what it will do for the lucky few who jump in during the launch window.

RUMOR - OVERVIEW OF NX BASIC FEATURES

This rumor comes to us from Emily Rogers. In this snippet from an article she posted, Emily talks about the various elements of the NX...

Here is what you can expect from the final retail product:
    • Custom Nvidia GPU chip
    • Region Free (No region lock)  <– Confirmed this.
    • Six inch (6.2 inch?) multi-touch screen (Heard nothing about a stylus)
    • The touchscreen has 720p resolution. <— 100% Confirmed.
    • 32GB of built-in internal storage
    • SD card support
    • Supports USB 2.0 and 3.0
    • The dock has two 2.0 usb ports and one 3.0 usb port.
    • The device is around 14 – 15 mm in thickness.
    • The right analogue stick will be below the face buttons.
    • Camera and microphone are not built into the NX portable device.
    • Cooling is still a little noisy
    • Detachable controllers (motion controls and next-gen vibration technology) <– Everything Laura Kate Dale said in her article was correct.
    • Share / Social button that Laura Kate Dale posted is true.
    • There are at least two shoulder buttons. I haven’t heard anything yet about triggers.
    • Battery Life — Ehhh not great. I haven’t heard an exact number of hours, but it doesn’t sound great.
    • Below PS4 and XB1 in raw power.
    • Supports Unreal Engine 4 and Unity Engine.

I dunno, need to see it but it doesn't sound great. Seems like they're cutting corners again in order to keep the price down.

And they're also expecting the announcement before Tokyo Game Show which is Sept 15th? I doubt it. Happy to be proven wrong though

Bplus announces Tank It! for Nintendo’s NX and the PC

Even though we are roughly six months away from the launch of the NX, Nintendo has confirmed exactly two pieces of information about their next console… 1) It exists, and 2) The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will be released sometime next year.

Thankfully, third partiy publishers are going ahead and announcing their NX projects anyway. Case in point, Austrian developer Bplus recently announced that they’ll bring their next game, Tank It!, to the NX in 2017. Described as a “war simulation game” with an “anti-war” message, Bplus also plans to release Tank It! for the PC in 2016:

Tank it! is a realistic and bloody war simulation game designed to show how brutal and dangerous war really is… that it is no good… that countless civilians are killed as collateral damage.

In Tank it! you command a drone to remotely control a heavy tank. You receive the mission to travel to remote villages, find and destroy the target military camps and eliminate all terrorists. But as in real life, there are many civilians in the villages, as well. The terrorists and civilians alike are at the player’s mercy. It is up to the player alone to decide how to handle this mission.

Bplus has previously developed a number of games for Nintendo’s eShop service including Bit Boy!! (2009) and Bit Boy!! Arcade (2014).

    Bit Boy Arcade is awful.
And I can't find excitement in the announcement of a indie PC game for the NX.
I need to see AAA development.
It is becoming increasingly disturbing that the 3rd party developers for the format, of which we are assured are many, have yet to show anything at all, with roughly six months until the console launches.

Unless it gets delayed... 10 days left for the supposed reveal before TGS.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,263 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

Some more rumour tidbits. The NX is more powerful than the PS4 but less powerful than the Scorpio and Neo, not significantly weaker. Again, cartridges are as good as confirmed. All Japanese 3rd parties are on board. It's very easy for developers to work on and port to, they're very happy with it. The NX will be VR and AR compatible. The NX was supposed to launch in November with 30 games but got delayed for a spec upgrade. Ubisoft have games in development, 2 exclusive and coming out around the launch window. The first is Beyond Good & Evil 2. The NX is primarily a home console with portable aspects.
